Chun Li General Thread: Blue Jade

I think it’s also slowing the move down on top of not getting as much damage from it made it not worth the risk, not just the minus 2 thing

Just now learning Chun. Trying to get iall down and it’s giving me trouble. I just read above that it isn’t as useful as it used to be? Anything I should be focusing on? Or tips in general. She’s a lot of fun but my first charge character so I’m struggling a little bit.

@jajajackson Welcome to the Chun side!

  • Firstly, you are almost correct. IALL isn’t as great as it was in S1. It can still be useful in situations. Just don’t plan on spamming it 24/7 when it was OP. But it can be utilized as divekick pressure in some situations.
  • The most important thing to focus on is mastering the basics of Chun-Li. She has some of the best pokes in the game (B/F MP, St. HP, Cr MK, to name a few). With these, dominate the midrange game.
  • She’s a high mobility, high techniques character with fast walk speed. But this means the more optimal combos, will have a higher execution and technical difficulty.
  • Her anti-air options aren’t as great as a DP. But her St. LK (while nerfed) is still one of her best anti-airs. You will have to time it right and space it right to make sure it doesn’t trade. Other options are B. HK, and EX SBK.
  • Her fireball doesn’t travel full screen like Ryu, Nash, Guile, nor does it cause knockdown (unless you hit them in the air). But you can use them to keep the distance to where it’s favorable to Chun.

Overall Chun-Li can be so much fun to use. That’s why many of us on this thread still main her, despite all the S2/2.5 changes. But when it comes to charge characters, there are simpler ones to learn and use in game: Guile being the prime example. If you are struggling with charge characters, the best thing I can recommend before learning Chun-Li is to get used to the charge mechanics of the game. Charge motions are more difficult than a QCF motion, so you’ll want to naturally feel when you have enough charge before a move can be executed instead of thinking about it.

Below are some good Chun-Li beginner videos to help you get started. I reccomend you get used to her play, and once you’re comfortable with her and her simple combos, then you can move on to the more advanced ones. But practice, practice, practice.

A great S2.5 tutorial/guide for Chun-Li, including optimal combos, gameplan, etc

This vid may be from Season 1, but it’s still a pretty decent guide to Chun-Li

I LOVE @SeaLeafDojo videos because not only does it contain many practical Chun-Li combos…

… but it also dives into deep analysis of Chun-Li’s season changes as well as essential mechanics for Chun-Li gameplay: (IALL execution, her SBK BnB, charge persistence, etc)

At first i thought that Chun was really hard and complicated then i tried Menat and oh man… Chun is super easy mode in my mind now.

Still, Chunner for life.

I really wish they would have just made it take meter so we at least still had the option.

I wish they make it +4 on hit at least so it has some worth using the way it is but one can dream

It is on crouching opponents but it is hard to confirm that.

Thank you so much for the resources! Very interesting and helpful. Unfortunately I’m playing on pad(Hori fighting commander 3) and learning a charger character on this is giving me a ton of trouble. I should get a stick but that wouldn’t be for a while

@jajajackson Oh I play on a pad. And believe me, mastering her combos (especially her Mk SBK BnB) has not been easy. It took months of practice, tons of losses, and two broken PS4 controllers to finally master it.
I’ll admit that I still have problems with her really advanced tech (St. lp/lk xxx lk SBK), but i feel most comfortable playing on a pad than a stick. But do what makes you feel comfortable.

@jajajackson @Chun-Li_Forever
I recommend frame traps with s. MP/c. LK/etc. up close or c. MK xx HRK (EX)/pokes from mid distance. iaHRK in the current patch is not very good for the following reasons:

  1. Slow and sometimes reactable (especially if you use the shortcut version and or medium version).
  2. Can’t get much damage unless you’re up close. Meterless knockdowns are harder if you’re going for standing lights to SBK.
  3. If the opponent blocks at close range, it’s -2 and now you’re guessing button or throw.

With all that said, the risk reward isn’t really there.

it can get up to +5 on crouching opponents if you do v skill into air legs but when is that gonna happen
If Capcom won’t give air legs back then at least give back her damage and a more reliable anti-air or revert some nerfs she got

3 more months until the moment of truth guys.

I am not liking what i have played vs Menat so far. Looks like it can be bad if they are good, which most people still aren’t.

Actually, might be REALLY bad.

Beautiful new Chun-Li costumes

*Chun-Li has three new costumes for all walks of life designed by Akiman. As an INTERPOL agent, Chun-Li often finds herself going undercover to take down Shadaloo.
*

*When Chun-Li has time for a vacation, you may see her in this relaxing outfit. Don’t let the flip flops fool you, her lightning legs are still as deadly as ever.
*

Though she spends most of her time keeping the peace, even Chun-Li needs sleep to recover for the tough trials to come. Bring her sleepwear into battle to become your opponent’s worst nightmare.

Man I’m really starting to get annoyed by Akuma. I was hoping the BS he puts me through would be left back in SF4, but nah. Every fucking game he ends up getting too much shit to look for, shits out damage and this is the one that they decide he needs to stay alive longer too? Come on son. I will always consider him much more of an eternal enemy to Chun than Bison. And yes, I was one of the people who was NOT happy when Akuma got revealed last year.

I’ma keep labbing stuff, but one piece of info: if you attempt to dash under his v-trigger air fireball and go for an air grab, make sure you jump towards him beforehand because if you try to neutral jump air grab… half the time Chun Li won’t turn around to grab him and you end up missing your opportunity/being at a disadvantage. This happened like 2-3 times last night where it would’ve taken the game, but instead ended up giving him the ability to come back and win. Fuck that noise.

I absolutely ADORE Chun-Li’s new costumes. But my new favorite has got to be her Vacation costume (easter egg version of course)

Here are the alternate colors and easter egg versions of all of Chun-Li’s new costumes.

Took a risk tonight and found out you can punish Akuma’s fireball cancelled into v-trigger with Chun’s CA. You have to do it immediately after the freeze. Something like Kolin’s CA, which is only 2 frames slower, cannot punish this. That’s how fast you have to do it, but the screen freeze gives you time to buffer the motion for it.

Buff ?
It’s starting guys.

^I want to check the season 1 trials to see if that’s been there forever or not. I hope it’s not character specific, so I can think of setting up some dirty stuff.

Speaking of which, it’s funny that after CC B+HP in the corner, you can spam it and it becomes it’s own follow up, meaty and frame trap like this sequence:

(In corner) Crush counter B+HP -> B+HP (juggles and air resets) -> B+HP (opponent falls into it, so it’s meaty and very + on block) -> B+HP (beats 3f attack into another crush counter) -> B+HP (juggle resets again) -> B+HP (meaty again) -> B+HP (crushes again) -> EX Legs.

I don’t really expect many people to have the audacity to mash during that sequence, but this is SFV and boy if they do… they’re gonna lose like 70%. I didn’t even check if this stuns at any point since I had stun turned off, but it might considering how many heavy attacks are involved.

That is very nice
