Zoning is kinda ass in SF5 to begin with, and Birdie has the tools (chain, dolphin jump, soda can) to compete with that anyway.
So yeah, you kinda want to get close and push him. Birdie can go toe-to-toe with Chun until you can push him to the corner, in which case it becomes IALL city.
Alright, for those who are more frame and tech savvy:
How much charge does Kikouken need? Not EX - just normal.
It makes no sense to me that if Chun can do St. MP, Cr.Mk xx L/Mk Sbk that she cannot do a kikouken.
I appreciate the quick response Dime, that explains it - I was right and my hopes were dashed to bits.
I find myself in matches relying too much on jab jab, cr.mk xx kikouken or jab jab, st. jab xx kikouken
so much in fact that sometimes when IALL connects Iām not getting the full potential combo.
Iāve programmed myself lately to go immediately into jab jabā¦
I was attempting to break that habit if kikouken would come off Cr. Mk.
I can do Cr. Lp, St .Mp xx Kikouken roughly 75% of the time on the left side about 40% on the right side.
I swore Alioune was getting Ex Kikouken to link outside VTrigger, but after playing last night it only linked in Vtrigger.
Iām unsatisfied lately with my Chun play.
And about the only thing Iāve seen lately from pro-level play that was thought provoking was from Ricki.
B+Hp Crush Counter, Cr. Lp for air reset and dash under.
Ricki crossed the opponent up and went for Air Legs after the cross under, but I did this a bit last night too and the cross-under is very 50/50
I dare say 70/30 actually.
I want to explore this deeper. Everyone is getting used to her pressure game at higher levels
Too bad there isnāt a way to extend LLegs in this game. I miss Cr. Hp xx LLegs - the real one not this motion crap.
I donāt understand how you can get cr.LP to st.MP to into Kikoken to combo ? I think that you probably have to do most of the charge time before using the cr.LP and just link into st.MP and immediately follow with the Kikoken but would that be safe on block and what advantages would that have on hit ?
Lately even with Mika, I have been favoring just going straight for the damage over reseting every chance i get. I am just in the habit of going to the resets sparingly and just going for the damage more often.
Also from the footage i saw with MOV at TGS, he was constantly hit confirming cr.MK into SBK. It looks like an are to work on for me.
@Rayartz Do you remember where did you see that reset footage ? I would like to see that.
@manbehindthewires I played a lot of Chun vs Birdie matchup right after the launch, so maybe some of the knowledge may feel outdated as the gameās meta evolved, but still.
First of all, you have to practice punishing Birdieās dumb shit. He has a lot of strange normals and specials with odd pushbacks, so you have to not let him get away with them on block. Here Chun Li Match-Ups Thread: Police Reports is my old post with the list of the most important punishes (please mind that it may be a little outdated).
Second - use far HK. As in Zangiefās matchup, because of his fat body and fat buttons, you can net some nice Crush Counters in a range where he canāt exactly answer them without risk.
Third - RTSD and use iALL A LOT. Even though he has a godlike aa button in d.MP, he canāt exactly answer your iall pressure with it (or at least my friend couldnāt) and because of his tall hitbox, you will usually get 3 hits on block, having the frame advantage. Also with a 5f jab he would usually be too late to react to iall with it.
Abuse his lack of 3f normal. Although his c.LPs and s.LKs have good range, they are 5f and 4f startup, making him vulnerable for being frametrapped easily. Also you have a guaranteed meaty after midscreen fwd throw, dash because of the lack of 3f move. Abuse it, especially when you can recover after the meaty jab if he tries to EX special on wakeup (his reversals have a really long startup).
Move around a stage. Be unpredictable with your movement (dashes and backdashes). If he throws a can, be proactive, donāt wait for the can to roll over to you, giving him a free get in. If he throws a banana, just wait it out, itās not like he gains anything by hiding behind it and chugging chains OR try using far HK from the max distance to check him waiting. Charge a fireball and walk behind it, waiting for his reaction. Dash forward, backdash twice, dash forward and check him with the fark HK/HP etc. Donāt let him dictate a slow pace of the match.
Donāt focus on only zoning (his chains and dolphin dives win with it), donāt try to only mindlessly aggro (he has good antiairs and ways to block your typical approach). Be more random, a little bit like Rashid running up and away, forcing him to move from his comfort zone. Then after you get that one knockdown, go ham.
I must make a correction to a previous post above.
You have to āearlyā cancel St. Mp to get EX Kikouken to link midscreen outside VTrigger.
A natural cancel or canceling it late like Cr. Mk xx SBK the Ex Kikouken wonāt link.
I actually made a poor sap give up today, felt bad for a second - only a second.
@amrraed ,
Youāre essentially doing IALegs (holding D/B), Cr. Lp, St. Mp (stick goes neutral) immediately push forward and hit a punch button.
Not as hard as you think once you figure out the hand positioning. You do need to be quick going neutral to forward.
As for the video you can check it out here:
but it is easy to replicate in training mode but I suppose you want to see it in playā¦
Sequence starts @ 44 Seconds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKEVoAzR94o
For those interested I figured Iād share some testing as I try to level up my Chun
Using BNB ALegs, Cr.Lp, St. Mp. Cr.Mk xx Mk SBK as a basis which is 245/393
ALegs, Cr. Lp, St. Mp xx Ex Kikouken linking out of Ex kikouken with:
Cr. Mk xx MK SBK 299/433 - Corner only
Ex Legs 280/363 - Mid screen extender and not worth the effort
You can use Cr. Lp, St. Lp if you have troubles doing St. Mp, but naturally you have a damage/stun drop
Cr. Mk xx MK SBK 275/409 - Corner only
My personal favorite and now my key go to for meaty or punishes in the corner:
F+Hk, Cr. Lp, St. Mp xx Ex Kikouken, Cr. Mk xx Mk SBK 335/553
Iāll test some VTrigger action tomorrow unless someone already has.
B+Hp Crush Counter air resets are next up for me to explore deeper
Interesting that vs. Urienās Aegis, Chun Liās fireballs will last the same amount of time they normally would even if they get reflected (Roseās reflect used to treat it like a new fireball). So doing a HP Kikoken from like half screen will bounce off an Aegis, but then dissipate almost immediately and never reach you. Aegis only last for 3 hits, so this could be a useful way to get rid of it in neutral without worrying too much about your own fireballs hitting you/controlling space. Only thing youād need to be wary of is if Urien is trying to do something like V-skill armor to try and check the fireball.
For all the Chuns that rock the swimsuit or cpt dress if you hold all 3 punches lk and up at the loading screen before the match you can alter the costumes, for the better lol. Youāre welcome
Part of the reason I rock the swimsuit outfit is because of the kick butt skirt, it looks really good - I donāt want to remove it.
That said, I like the idea and hope they continue to do it with more outfits.
I gotta say after actually picking the altered swimsuit I like the original better. Without the skirt itās a little too DOA for me. But yea, that said I love that capcom is giving us alternate intros and tweaked/hidden costumes. Little things like that go a long way for games, plus variety is a good thing
