See how far you can get abusing v skill. And whether v trigger makes things more advantaged/safer like her new ground command normal hasanshu that she has in the alpha series as a special.
Check how abusive her pokes are now that thereās no focus to keep them in check.
Check to see if she has worthwhile confirms/bnbs into ex legs.
Check to see if her up close offense via throw/frametrap/neutral jump to beat wiffed throw tech is decent.
Oh yeah maybe you can combo after hazanshu with v-trigger on? Maybe it multihits?
Just saw some new footage from BET and SDCC, every time I see Chun - sheās getting her butt kicked.
This game is so in your face and it doesnāt favor Chunās poking, mid-range game plan.
Sure Iāll still use her as my main and yes you could argue that people havenāt figured her out yet of course.
But when a character is getting wrecked from the get go, sheās only going to continue getting wrecked. Fewer players using her means fewer people to figure things out, the slower she develops tech.
Seeing how freaking epic Ken looks and with more characters in-coming, sheās looking rather bland.
FYI thoroughly kills me to say these things. Been using Chun since 92ā - so please excuse my venting.

Every time I watch her she does look weak, but I find that sheās going to be a very technical character. Iād like her lost properties back personally, it would bring her back into contention with the other current cast. Iām gonna be putting work in with her and Ken during the beta so weāll see how it goes.

Not a big fan of the doom and gloom over pre beta footage. Chun Li is the character I want to main until I see one of my favorites hit and I think itās just a matter of having people get more time with her. Some characters have their flowcharts figured out faster whenever a new game starts to develop, but with time thereās always room for other characters to grow. I usually see people get rekt when they use Nash too, but I also believe itās because heās a character that needs more time spent with.
Hmm⦠Well you know I disagree with this. I would say āto play devils advocateā what do you really look at for chun right now and see strength? As Iāve said before and I thoroughly believe this, most characters that are strong start out that way. Some lose power over time and āsomeā get better with time. But mostly itās the characters that start off strong end up getting stronger.
Itās not that I believe that chun has no room to grow⦠But when I look at her room to grow as compared to like⦠Bisons⦠Or even ryus⦠Iām left being⦠Well kinda she seems like she just needs more. She seems like her sf4 incarnation minus crazy backdash abuse and minus stupid 3 frame crouchtech abuse. Still has pokes that seem to not be quite good enough to really consider her a poking machine like rog or fei or rose. Still has a fireball that doesnāt really compare to real fireballs. Still has a walkspeed that while fast⦠Isnāt A2 fast or ST fast when compared to everyone elseās walkspeed.
Anyways it isnāt doom and gloom, she does look decidedly midtier⦠But at this point if one really wants her to be top tier, something VERY strong will have to be discovered.
Question to you DJ:
If 3S chun didnāt have sa2 and had only kikoken instead or if it wasnāt hitconfirmable like it is⦠Do you see her being anything above midtier in that game? She would still have her godlike pokes and stuff⦠But would be forced to parry into sa2 or simply not to have it at all. In ST chun had huge damage to go with her decent pokes and amazing walkspeed plus a better fireball and a better super. In 3s she has hitconfirmable super into 45% damage plus ending in mixup.
In A2 she has braindead custom into 80% damage, og sagat fireballs, ST chun walkspeed, 3s chun priority.
I look at this chun and I see not much of those things present. So I look at what else there is and what I see is an average poking character with decent walkspeed and a floaty jump.
Right now Iām really looking at v trigger to save her⦠But seeing how the v trigger is going for just about every character, her v trigger is looking kinda paltry compared to what some others getā¦which is kinda like comparing xf3 Vergil to xf3 Spider-Man⦠Both good of course mechanically speaking, but ones mechanics go from being good to being ābullshitā I aināt seeing much bullshit with chun yet, but Iāve seen some with the other characters.
But hey, they have a year to balance her⦠Not that I believe capcom would do that, but yeah, perhaps.
Yeah, i definitely agree. Chun definitely seems to have some strengths, but they dont seem to be blending well with this super offensive cast. Iād like to believe that maybe she has a bigger learning curve, but still its not too encouraging. I too hope the beta helps the cause. As many of you said - Iām maining her regardless, but I really hope that if she is as weak as she looks currently, she gets some tweaks before the main launch. If anything, beta phase 1 might give them the data they need. Either that or we find out that shes just fine.
I think Chun and Ryu are looking more and more outdated with each reveal. Like some said, iām maining her anyway⦠my concern is that among such fast/cool characters that are coming she becomes a bit shy and boring to play⦠I mean, chun is cool for being this anime/fast/headstomp character with good pokes and lightning legs and im not feeling that special thing she used to haveā¦
i know sheās supposed to be this ranged character but i dont see it when cammy can get that range too now. Iād really like to see her ranged moves be an issue for characters and i hope spaced legs will be a decent pressure tool like roseās spiral.
I dunno its kinda tough to say without understanding where the meta of the game will go. If there is a meta you can start calling stuff like that, but right now people are just flinging buttons and hit confirms and its hard to assess things well on that alone.
We donāt even know what everyones high level confirms and pressure games are yet. Ive definitely seen enough instances in fighting games of characters being underplayed until a few months or a year down the road when people actually spend time. With only 7 characters in a game that doesnāt have a concrete meta I say we need more time
I agree when they 1st revealed her with the OTG( more of a floor bounce] and cancelling special into special that was hype. Her new kicks were remove and the OTG as well. Apparently it isnāt street fight
Yeah chun wasnāt streetfighter enough I guess. But bisons teleport, Charlieās teleport, and cammys divekick that becomes a left/right crossup mixup on block⦠Are totally streetfighter
Not that Iām disagreeing with what you said.
Well after playing with her a bit, i gotta say i didnāt really enjoy using her as much as other characters. The range on her pokes is deceptively short. c.MK is a lot shorter than i thought it was. s.MK was a surprisingly decent poke; felt more like SF4 s.MP than s.MP does, just not cancelable. b.HP felt REALLY bad if you are comparing to 3S, i couldnāt catch anything on it. Doesnāt nullify projectiles either since someone asked. Speaking of projectiles, her fireball has crazy startup. Feels like Nash HP boom startup and that thing is slow. The best things she has from my experience is V-Trigger and kara throw. V-Trigger opens up more stuff for her since i believe she can combo after f.HK and df.MK. I couldnāt confirm what kind of combos unfortunately but she can at least link stuff after. Comboing after f.HK accentuates her throw game quite a bit since normally you dont get much off from baiting throws and lows with f.HK but V-Trigger allows you to get something. Without V-Trigger it seems better to just bait throws by walking back out of range. f.HK also couldnāt go over Ryuās c.LP which was quite annoying.
V-Skill is kinda weird in not a good way. Sometimes it felt like i would V-Skill and my falling j.HK would just miss right through them; might be a j.HK problem ibut i dunno. j.MK does cross up though so i was getting some use out of V-Skill into j.MK stuff. V-Skill doesnāt really work as a poke either. I forgot to check if it is airbourne frame 1 though, sorry. You can also combo a normal after V-Skill for a reset so that could be a thing for mixup purposes. Someone asked if s.LP hits crouchers and it does on Ryu. One problem is that you have to be really close to hit some of her stuff. Like in order to hit c.LP s.MP c.MK you have to be close to the opponent. Same with c.HP xx LLegs c.LP. It felt like not having a good safe way to confirm into her super hurts her relative to the rest of the cast.
The thing is that at this stage, people get hit with a lot of dumb shit because no one really knew anything. I think if the game ends up where you have to utilize a lot of throws to condition your opponent for damage then Chun has a distinct advantage in that area because of her kara throw, but if it stays in the poking confirms into super way then she feels at quite a disadvantage.
As someone who understands game design and making things interesting from the creative/artistic side (donāt know jack about programming mind you)
If you see that a character is being overlooked and getting beaten or just not getting played a lot (which we can agree footage of Chun is really lacking compared to other cast members)
You have to step back and say, Why is this happening? talk to people about why they arenāt picking her, why they arenāt interested vs other characters, why is she losing out and reassess. Maybe increase hit boxes or shift some frame data around. etc.,
This is all part of the development process.
Several pro players have openly said she seems āLackingā. I canāt say for sure - I havenāt had the opportunity to play her.
People like HiyaMaya keep coming forward and saying pretty much the same thing as well.
Iām just going by what I see, what I hear and what I feel at the moment. Unless the next half of the cast sucks sheāll be low- mid-tier at best (AGAIN!)
Also i have to question whether the special-on-whiff thing is really there. I admit that sometimes it felt like that was happening, but when i was on the other side of the screen i tried to do c.MK whiff into LLegs and got nothing. Leads me to believe it might either be a proximity thing or maybe some sort of glitch. needs more testing either way.
Chun losing the air ender spin kicks donāt mean much, air lighting legs seems better in every single way.
Now the old v trigger, the old ultra/ca, her target combo that had a crumple, lighting legs than caused a jugle state, those are big changes .

Perhaps the buffer window for combos also applies to the normal on whiff, which is why the buffered special is coming out. Maybe if you input it fast enough, before the buffer window, it wonāt come out and you can still get the old OS.
