Chun Li General Thread: Blue Jade

that’s supposed to be what Capcom does with patches. They said in the beginning what they learned from sf4 as a series is not to nerf characters but to buff the ones that need it. We’ll have to see if they really stick to that mindset. After all her win rate online overall is under 50%, if she were so overwhelmingly better than everyone else; the win rate would reflect that regardless of player skill especially due to match making.

While i think Chun and other top tier characters deserve some nerfs, i have the feeling she’ll get completely wrecked when the patches arrive.

I think the thing that annoys me about places like EventHubs and Twitter calling for Chun nerfs is… well it’s a couple things

Tournament results. She has won a handful of tourneys, she has not dominated at all. Yet the couple times she does make it to grand finals and win, it’s “wah wah nerf chun”. And then said people gloss over Infiltration bodying Sako 3-0 at Evo, Nuki getting 3-0’d by Nuckledu’s Nash at CEO. Or Ricki getting wrecked 2 weeks in a row by Nuckledu’s Mika, and demolished killed by SnakeEyez’s and Itazan’s Giefs (Evo).

Overrating her matchups. Based on everything I’ve read and seen, she loses 4-6 to Nash, and is 5-5 vs Ryu, Cammy, Ken, Necalli, Mika. She may or may not have a 6-4 matchup vs Karin. So basically, vs the widely accepted top tier of the game, she is very well balanced. All nerfing her would do is just give her a bunch of 4-6 matchups.

You know what I think? I think a “Chun is too good” echo chamber started in February 2016 and a ton of people bought into it. You got people calling for iaLL’s to be nerfed, st. hp to be nerfed, st. lk to be nerfed. Okay. What exactly is she supposed to do in a match without those tools? Poke you to death with f. mp and cr mk? Toss out EX-LLs that combo into nothing?

edit: on the bright side, if she does get nerfed, at least we won’t have to hear any more excuses when she wins.

I feel she isn’t overpowered at all, despite eventhubs rating her as the top tiered character in the game. I agree with you @JoeyTones Chun-Li needs her tools (IALL, St. Lk AA, etc) so she can be successful in the game. I feel she’s a fun fighter to play with and feels just right to the point where she doesn’t feel OP. I wish they don’t nerf her. I don’t play as any other character other than Chun.

Chun Li’s overall play style in 5 is a lot more classic SF than a lot of other characters, with a lot of emphasis on creating and maintaining pressure. Think it was Ortiz or FChamp that described her as “suffocating” in 5. I think this makes losing to a Chun more impactful to a lot of players, it feels like a bigger loss, which gives the impression that she’s OP.
Definitely of the impression that she’s fine where she is. A few characters need a little more of a kick, but Chun doesn’t need to be made squishy at all.

Edit: oh and this “she has a dive kick” stuff needs to stop. IALL is a nice tool, but it’s by no means this holy hand grenade that people make it out to be.

Pfft… everybody feels suffocating when they win in this game.

We already know her weaker areas and I pointed out that there are other characters with similar v-trigger or the same times (or how shorter timed v-triggers increases your chances of a 2nd activation). But people who don’t play her tend to ignore that because their character (that some other top players are probably wrecking shop with) has it “so much worse”. Okay  .

I can’t wait until season 2 because either she’ll stay the same and others will get stronger or she’ll get nerfed a bit and people can stop complaining (or at least they won’t have much to point out when they do… not that I think they really have a strong case now anyway, but it’s annoying). But ultimately I’m just curious where Capcom is at with this. You never really get their opinion on things, so balance changes usually reflect what they think is justified after the characters have their run in the competitive circuit.

“Chun’s pokes are too strong!”

Ah yes, my young Evenhubs user. As she was designed to have said strong pokes, you unfortunately do not have the capacity to work around those.

Honestly though, Chun is mad honest. If she gets nerfed into oblivion I give up hope on this game, she’s just strong because she rewards player ability, she has to work for damage and is full of squish.

@Froztey
Ahh, (strokes his long kung fu master beard Gen style) - So you say Chun is a footsie based character.
Scrubs know not how to footsie, I blame SF4 Focus Attack for training scrubs to not know of… the footsie.

Seriously though, you nailed it.
She is a mid-range poke heavy character with low damage and stun output. The harassing aspect and the panic stricken opponents that want to hit buttons are and should have a difficult time against her.
I think a few characters can “cheat” footsies by just whaling away on certain buttons like Karin, Ken, Rashid, FANG, Mika and Necalli

Just my thoughts though, I finally have a solid day off and I’m going to play me some SFV, haha.
I’ve been having withdrawals, but sadly I think I’m going to play some Ibuki, Juri and Ken today…unless I lose a lot.

.

Thanks for say this punish with F+Hk!!! This is extreme useful! What if I want I can still switch sides against Karin, to put it toward the wall

Yeah no problem, I use F+Hk a lot throughout the match, so it is more readily available on reaction and instinct than St. Hk, dash in St. Mp - etc.,
Plus the damage with the CC combo is 303/503 stun the other is around 280 if I recall right but stun is 518.
Catch then with a meaty F+Hk or Cr. Mp and dish out some more stun you are likely looking at a free combo from dizzy.

So F+Hk, Cr. Lp, St. Mp, Cr. Mk xx Mk SBK or F+Hk, Cr. Lp xx Lk Legs, Cr. Lp xx Lk SBK are both pretty solid.

usually if I land a CC its off of B+Hp anyway, lol

F+HK for dancing over their grave after a knockdown is also a nice little use for it.

Best thing to do is just have other characters ready to play. I basically main Ibuki now but still side Chun. Odds are people will think Ibuki isn’t good enough and she’ll get buffed to OD levels

That’s why I play Laura.
She’s truthfully pretty nasty if you know what you’re doing. I blow people up a heck of lot faster with Laura than I do Chun.
So when she gets buffed (Cuz she’s SOOOO BAD…)
…Mwhahahahahaha

I still haven’t figured out Juri, she’s not as smooth in this game - I do need to spend more time with Ibuki, because I like her a lot.

Good day for Chun today lads (though another pair of 2nds and a team kill at ECT)

Unseated Daigo at ECT, and Go1 almost taking the Puerto Rican tourney

:woot:

That final was painful though. I always saw Chun, as the queen of buttons being Rashid’s (king of frame disadvantages) worst nightmare and he went right through her!

I remember having difficulties against Rashid, yeah it is a bit of a tricky matchups.

My issue is that my other character is Mika and she is gonna get rekt as well. My only hope is a buffed up Juri or Cody for season 2. I will keep with a nerfed Chun if Capcom doesn’t go overboard with the nerf bat.

Ok so I’m just really getting over being run away from. Like seriously EVERYONE runs from me, save maybe Zangief.

Kens run and then v trigger in and step kick and I get hit cause it’s online and I don’t know exactly what I’m reacting to. Ryus run and throw fireballs and I walk into them.

Alex runs and I walk into dash elbow…

Like seriously this is all I play against. People that do nothing but run… Till I stop chasing them. Then once I stop chasing them and throwing plasma… Then they are just jumping towards me. I can throw plasma fine… Only get like 1 in 10 jumped over and combod, but it’s like I really can’t force anyone to play footsies at all. Because no one will do it.

Played against a rashid that does literally nothing but backdashx2-5 throw whirlwinds at fullscreen. Wait for me to approach then wall jump or v reversal out and do it all over again. Like 1 time in 10 he approaches to get some damage and whether he gets it or not he’s back to running away… Felt like there was nothing I could do to stop him. I’d anticipate him jumping off the wall and I’d jump with him to try and airthrow him… Nope. Can’t get high enough. I’d try to bait the wall jump by walking forward then walking back and trying to stay where he would end up… Nope, doesn’t work he can choose where to jump in midair based on my positioning. He can just fall back into the corner then jump again immediately… It’s just stupid.

How do I deal with this shit. People simply won’t engage and it’s starting to just suck all the fun out of the game when even grapplers are being used as keepaway.

Chun wins corners. If they want to run into a corner, I’d let them - it’s where I was going to put then anyway haha

Mix up your walks, slides and dashes for starters. If you’re getting hit going forward, it may be that your movement is predictable. Always nice to throw a fireball and follow it towards them as insurance.
After that, your f+MP and HP are there to punish people on the edge of footsie range, especally HP. Really hit them multiple times for outfighting with HP, even if it whiffs or gets blocked, a couple in a row is a nice taunt that shows you’re getting away with whatever you want and holding down the midscreen (even put some empty sweeps in if they’re doing nothing about it).
Then it’s patience. Wait for them to run out of screen and start throwing nonsense and contain it.

Some early IALLs are always a nice way to condition players to stay on the ground, be aggressive with EX SBK on jump ins, as most people don’t fancy their chances against it.

At this point, they can’t move back because there’s no screen and they dont want to move up because they have a lot of ways to get caught.

I find myself chasing players around the screen too, but so much of Chuns strategy is about walking the opponent backwards, I kind of take that as a freebie.

I know all of that, but it’s still insightful. I guess I’m just tired of how people play “footsies” in this game. Rather than play footsies, they’d rather just run away then mixup between dash, jump, fireball or ranged move and repeat this stupidity over and over again.

The problem is that it actually works as a baseline strat. It’s to hard to look for dash jump and dash attack like say rogs dash punch. Well, it’s not to hard, but in order to do it I have to have a read of some sort.

I just feel like I’m being forced to play like a scrub and it’s super boring.
