Chun Li General Thread: Blue Jade

1-3 or 1-4 vs ccglapchi Rashid in ranked

I need the rashid experience, i want a ft# with him :frowning:

Thanks man! Appreciate the kind words XD Xian’s fang is crazy. I never played a fang at that level before so it was a good experience.

V Trigger has 1f invincibility, can be used to escape last active frame meaty setups

That’s interesting and disheartening at the same time. I don’t even know which of my setups hit on the last active frame, lol.

So I decided to pick up a pocket Chun (because why not). I’ve heard that she has a really ambiguous cross up setup with V-Skill, any truth to this and if so, how do I set it up?

SBK knockdown in corner then V-Skill

It’ll say cross up and you’ll land in front of him instead of the corner

What button do you guys use when going for shimmy? I’m guessing b.HP or c.MK for the normal, but not sure on the special. Also, does Chun have any meaty setups with frame kills like other characters? Off throw, SBK, EX lightning legs, etc? Thanks for any info <3

Does Vega(claw) have a weird crouching hurtbox or something? Sometimes when I do the SBK combo on him in the corner and he’s crouching the SBK kick will completely whiff and open me up to a punish. SBK combos always have some weird quirks when done on crouching opponents, but whiffing is something I only see happen against Vega.

Ok, what is happening online? I’m never one to complain about rage quitters, but this past week the only people who stick around for a full match are the ones that win. I literally just had 5 different people drop out. Anyone else experiencing this?

I literally only play casual matches for that reason and even then some of them rage quit!
I figure as long as I can score fight money and level my characters up to heck with fighting Lag, rage quitters and losing streaks for LP.
My Chun and Laura are on LOA right now - I’m kind of on an Overwatch, having way too much fun wrecking people with Tracer.
I seem to click with hot/light hearted, high mobility characters.
Looking forward to Ibuki and of course…JURI!

(*side note) Another reason I quit playing ranked is I got really tired of going up against international players!
out of 10 matches 5-6 will most certainly be international. Canada, Brazil, Mexico, England and the occasional Asian country.

I even try to play the least douchy as possible. No mashing or throwing out random anything, I wait patiently when lag occurs or people are away from the game and still… If I win, rage quit. I was god awful when I picked up SFV because I couldn’t let go of SFIV habits and now that I’m actually making progress, no one will finish a match with me. Ok, now I sound lame. Rant over. Lol I just want to play, win or lose.

I use st. MP and link into cr. MK xx special after a throw bait. It’s shorter range, but you do actually have time to step forward and punish a whiffed throw with it. I do it for the confirmability over single button throw bait punishes.
If I have v-trigger available, then F+MP xx activate -> cr. HP xx LK Legs, cr. LP, cr. MK xx MK SBK is what I’d go for as a throw bait punish.

-Meaty setups are listed in the wakeup thread. Most of them are covered there, frame kills and all.

I haven’t had anyone rage quit on me in like a month (but I only play online like twice a week). I’m in Super Gold/Ultra Gold so I guess at that level of play people are less salty and end up winning enough to not rage quit as often.

Well I just hit gold… But anyone 5000+ LP has been just dropping out, probably 80% of the time. Oh well, it is what it is.

Dropped Chun for Symmetra and Pharah in Overwatch ; (

sako just beat tokido and go1 back to back. hopefully he does well this tourney, top 5 already!

Watching these vids and going over my own games, it’s becoming more and more apparent that there’s something quite lacking in most Chuns games and something that we should probably start to take into consideration:

Shimmy…

Chuns shimmy damage can be as little as cr.mk for a safe shimmy that does semi respectable damage and is completely safe… Or she can do as much as 300 damage in v trigger with no meter via cr.hp starter…

So, lots of options.

Unfortunately the cr.hp starters are unsafe as hell… So they are a big guess, but the semi respectable damage of something like cr.mk… Is very small. We probably need to err somewhere in the middle for general purposes and then err in the cr.mk direction at points where we really are unsure of what the opponent might do

So… How about bhp as a shimmy? This might actually work as an all around great shimmy tool, even done naked… Let’s look at it:

Safe on block.
PLUS on block.
Can be canceled from.
Chance to CC into a bigger confirm.
More damage than naked cr.mk.

That’s ALOT of benefits.

Also note, that st.mp is also extremely useful here and though it looks like it doesn’t have much range, it is actually much more ranged than a throw so Chun can shimmy into and out of throw range then wiff punish with st.mp,cr.mk xx SBK for an easy 217 damage… Or the easier yet still highly confirmable st.mp,cr.mk xx HK legs for 200 damage.

So long story short… Chun players need to ste up this shimmy game and get these incredible damage numbers Se is really capable of. As an example, with super and v trigger stocked, a shimmy gets Chun an incredible 417 damage… So so much for her not having good ways into damage. And remember that with v trigger stocked she still gets even more damage with no v trigger pop or meter:

Cr.hp xx LK legs,cr.lp,cr.mk xx MK SBK does 300 damage in v trigger.

Alternatively BHP xx HK legs does 217 damage in v trigger and BHP alone does 100 damage…

Just to note, Cr.HP can be cancelled into Kikoken as frame trap and pressure tool, and of course, it’s completely safe. Street Fighter 5 mechanic focuses on Pressure more than SF4 because of grey damage. Why? That’s because grey damage takes too long to recover and If you pressure enough, one Cr.lp or Kikoken hit can take out all of grey damage you inflict so far on opponent before they notice. In this aspect, Chunli is superior to other characters because she have this crappy slow Kikoken which can be used as both frame trap and pressure tool.

My main pressure tools currently are as follow ( I do mix between all of them, they are very easy to confirmed into EXLegs or CA if hit ):

  • Cr.Lp–> Cr.Lp–> Cr.HP cancel to LP or HP kikoken (Requires 2 Cr.LP to better spacing and frametrap)
  • S.LP—>crouch and wait 1/2 second—> Cr.HP cancel to LP or HP kikoken (shimmy out of opponents’s throw range and then attack, after S.LP they cannot throw you any more).
  • Cr.Lp–> B.HP cancel to LP or HP kikoken
  • Cr.LP—>Cr.MK cancel to LP or HP kikoken
  • Cr.Lp–> S.LP cancel to LP or HP kikoken
  • Cr.LP (or cr.LK)—> MK IALL —> continue to pressure by kikoken
  • B.HP—> B.HP cancel to LP or HP kikoken ( 2 B.HP to enough charging time for kikoken)

Holy crap this opens my Chun Game a lot more. I’ve just started to get the hang of her after like 2 weeks of getting bodied. I know she has great tools, but I just didn’t know when to use them. THANKS!

No problem, man. I found out these techniques 2 months ago, when I noticed that normal attack cause grey damage on block and kikoken can safety chip them out. Mix all of them constanly, your opponent should be forced to stay in the corner and cannot get out.
And I believe, Chunli users rank above Gold already know all these tricks

Sako use B.HP --> Kikoken a lot
Nuki, Majorboy use st.LP–> Kikoken a lot
Many Chun use Cr.LP–>Cr.MK—> Kikoken
