Truthfully I think you are playing Chun in an SF4 style where it doesn’t fit her or this game in general.
Guile is coming soon and he may be the answer you’re looking for.
Ryu can be played passive and zone heavy quite effectively.
Chun can do it, but with her low health and moderate damage output you’ll need to play really precise with much room for error.
Chun needs to be a burst of rush down and harassment, which leads to rush down opportunities or punishing the opponent’s mistakes.
I say you can but you’ll be doing it mainly with your normals in certain matchups. Her fireballs just don’t do enough damage, travel far enough or have the frame advantage in relation to how much damage you will take if you throw one bad one.
The style can work with your buttons as long as you have a life lead, but if you lose the life lead you’ll be forced to get in. Some characters have really strong backdashes that force you to take the fight to them.
Agreed. She’s good in neutral, but she shines in her offense/pressure. Sometimes I get outneutralled against top players, but am still able to manage to sneak in wins once I get her offense going. Chun’s pressure is just so good, mainly due to her insane walkspeed.
So what to do against a good Chun-li? It looks like shes the best character in everything and it’s kinda hard to win no mater what you do. Playing Ryu.
I’m seriously starting to think that she needs A LOT of nerfs in a lot of things.
j. MK is really good at a certain range if done early so her neutral jump options don’t work well. It is very active and good at keeping Chun on her toes since her anti-air game isn’t the best in the world.
IALL is a free cr. FP if you are looking for it.
Fireball a lot when she doesn’t have super since her jump is TERRIBLE. Abuse LP fireball ALOT when she doesn’t have super.
Sweep into VTC when she doesn’t have super is strong.
Chun’s don’t poke with st. RH necessarily a lot in this matchup so just walkforward ‘parry’ if you expect a st. FP since after parrying it or a st. MK you can get big damage.
Don’t cancel normals into fireball on block.
Most people are thinking that matchup is even or maybe even in Ryu’s favor, so I don’t think you can consider it a terrible matchup for you.
Anyone who thinks Chun Li is by far and away the best character in the game hasn’t fought a good Ryu, Nash or Cammy. She very well could be the best character, but she is not in a category of her own. Ryu is right there, if not slightly better.
Ryu does everything better than Chun except Neutral. Of course top neutral is a huge advantage in this game, but what Ryu brings to the table with damage, frame traps, CC combos and a motion fireball can’t be overlooked.
Cammy is a frame trapping, shimmying powerhouse with strong neutral and the best reversals in the game and a top 5 trigger. I also think she beats Chun. Is she better? Probably not, but she’s right there
Nash is in a class of his own when it comes to space control. He gets in and out better than anyone and has some of the most extremely oppressive match ups in the game. He’s right there.
Dhalsim is also right there.
Chun Li is NOT S rank. For someone to be S rank would imply extremely oppressive match ups across the board where she has a steep advantage against almost everyone. Chun might be the best character, but she isn’t THE character of the game. She may lose to two of the characters right next to her(Ryu and Cammy), and who does she outright dominate to the tune of a 7/3 match up? Possibly Laura? Maybe Gief? That’s not enough for S.
Everything Chun has also had a legit answer/counter. Her best tool, IALL, can be stopped by everyone.
The guy bitched about Chun Li needing a lot of nerfs while using Ryu is a clown. He’s right there, if not the true #1.
To be clear, this is how I see the tier list so far.
Group 1: Chun/Cammy/Nash/Ryu/Dhalsim
Group 2: Necalli/Karin/Birdie
Group 3: Ken/Vega/Bison/R.Mika/Alex
Group 4: Laura/Rashid
Group 5: FANG/Zangief
@CharmingRogue Karin not top 10? Please tell me the 10 characters you think have an argument for being better than her?
Chun is one of the top 7 ish characters in the game, I do not think there is a clear number 1 character, at all, I think everyone has at least 1 difficult match. Nash, Necalli, Chun, Ryu, Ken, Birdie and Karin seem to all stand out, honorable mention to cammy and sim, I think they all beat up on each other in various ways, but no one beats them all.
I personally have trouble with birdie, nash, cammy, and necalli, and feel like think necalli and nash are not in her favor, and birdie I’m back and forth. Cammy as well give chun probs due to not being able to AA, its winnable, but its slight cammy, her low life makes its not as hard as it could be, still cammy favor.
can anyone just tell me if that is a medium sbk or a light sbk also is there a trick to keep the charge after the standing light kick? I can go lp. into lk.sbk but i can’t catch the st.lk
It’s LK SBK. MK SBK is too slow to combo off lights. You just have to hit up plus LK immediately after pressing s.LK. If you do it fast enough the game retains the charge and still gives you the SBK. It’s not easy, but doable.
I would if I didn’t play a lot of A2 Rose. A2 Rose is a character that doesn’t have a lot of good block beaters other than friends super. Walk throw doesn’t have great range and can be teched to further minimize damage.
It’s a bit weird to get used to. Pretty much have to be right next to them like in Melty Blood to throw them. Overall though it’s just considering her other options and that she’s good at building white chip.
I agree with everything you said, and the tierlist is mostly accurate imo. Of course a lot of tech is still being discovered and there is no definite tierlist (it’s all subjective of course). I agree on all points regarding Chun being #1, but not in a league of it’s own. Ryu and Nash are close behind her imo, and are 2nd and 3rd respectively. Although top 3 is very clear at this point, even top 5 is debatable.
Regarding Karin, I said ‘maybe’ not top 10 as I think the midrange of tiers is kinda vague and hard to estimate (so many characters feel like they around the same tier). Although I think Karin is highly overrated. She has decent footsies (st.mk, far reaching unsafe sweep), and okay-ish pressure. But her vtrigger is 1 big gimmick, I would almost call it useless against any competent player. And other than that she doesn’t have that much going for her. Her overhead is reactable and punishable (every followup too, there’s not even a mixup. You can just cr.lp after you block the overhead and you will punish every single followup. Same goes for most of her vtrigger ‘mixups’). She does do insane stun with EX combo’s though, I’ll give her that. She can be very explosive with meter.
Basically, Karin to me feels like a worse version of Cammy, only without a divekick and a shittier vtrigger. Once you know how to handle all the gimmicks, there’s just a solid decent-ish character left.
I don’t get why you say this is a good match up for Ryu, IT ISN’T. You can’t play footsies, you can’t play the zoning game and you can’t jump. You have 0 ways to get close to Chun. She’s broken no matter what you say.
Instant air legs is the most retarded thing ever since Cammy instant regular divekicks.
And yes, she’s the best character in the game. Awsome normals, reversal, fireball, combo potential from a fucking jab and has a stupid jump.
ryu has good dmg output and stun, invincible dp, a safe on block super that guard breaks in vtrigger (that can be used as an fadc like mechanic) , solid normals, unblockable setups, and a good fireball, and a parry
