Never read or seen Akira but that movie looks pretty good and from what I just read Akira sounds like something I should read.

Akira the Manga was actually a very deep story, dealing with highly complex, morally ambiguous characters, lots of phiolosphy, and a shit ton of identity issues, ranging from personal to national - and the latter being no small aspect.

I loved it for these points.

Kaneda and the school nurse… I lack words to describe how incredibly fuckin’ cool the layering of the characters in that Manga is. So good.

Outside of the telekinesis this hardly relates to Akira.

  1. Not in Japan
  2. Not in a post apocalyptic future
  3. No biker bangs
  4. No blue wrinkly midgets
  5. No giant blob monster
  6. No one is screaming “TETSUOOOOOO!!!” in dramatic fashion
  7. No red leathers

So since someone misuses the power of telekinesis it’s obviously related to Akira? Regardless of that the movie actually looks interesting and this thread might have gone over better if you didn’t make the Akira reference.

I’m not saying this is an Akira ripoff, but Akira anime is almost 25 years old and the manga 30 years old. It’s very likely that the creative guys behind this movie heard of Akira-- and just as likely that they heard of Blair Witch. Movies look at past film/TV/literature for ideas all the time, doesn’t make it a ripoff.

And yeah, Akira manga > anime in every way except the groundbreaking animation.

It’s uncannily similar to akira. On IMDB it says the three main characters get their powers after visiting a mysterious crater. I’m only on vol 2 of akira (3 and 4 are en route in the mail) so I don’t know what I may be missing but akira also has superpowers centering around a crater. I don’t want to say a whole lot more in the event I spoil the story of akira for anyone.

Also one of the characters in chronicle is pretty reminiscent of tetsuo in the sense that he runs away with his power.
