I had this exact same idea with the USB hub just the other day and wanted to know if anyone had tried it yet. I was curious if it has worked out well, any lag or loading issues so far?

That’s actually really smart. Someone could do that with a stick, then have GGPO with them wherever they went, too.

I’m not a huge fan of the placement of the start and select buttons, but it shouldn’t be much of an issue with the recessed holes for them.

All in all, you should be really proud of your first attempt at a custom. Both my attempts at customs ended up in the trash.

Thanks for your feedback. To answer you questions:

  1. I haven’t notice any lag. I tested it on ps3 and tekken tag 2 and didn’t have any problem pulling off any combos. Also on MAME everything works just fine, no loading problems, all games run and load smoothly off the memory card and it’s only class 6 (tested tekken 3, mortal kombat 1,2,3; double dragon NEO-GEO, street fighter 2, metal slug).
  2. The paint job is actually ebony wood stain

With the experience I gained with doing this stick, I’m already thinking about making another one. this time I would just use clear varnish on it and leave the natural wood colour and maybe use eight 24mm buttons. If I could find a knackered duslshock 4 on ebay to recycle the pcb, I could have one ready for tekken 7.

As someone who used a four port USB hub on 360 for a long time to make playing SC4 easier when people come over, as well as a USB extension cable to be able to play on my bedroom TV without dragging all my gear in there before, there is no lag with that setup.

I had just never considered putting on in the case.

Finished up this stick today:

LoL thanks for the kind words. I’m glad I acknowledged the wiring’s lack of presentability beforehand but like Undamned has already said each wire is traceable and labelled so I wont have to get out my multi meter to workout which is what. Which will come in handy when I start working on the upgrade I have in mind.

As for the button layout think of it like this, the stick is directly infront of me and because the stick and buttons are close together (as they were on my previous stick) it means that my elbows stick out on an angle. This might only apply to me but I found that it’s more ergonomic to have the buttons on this much of an angle to the bottom edge rather than parallel or near parallel as my wrist doesn’t have to bend for my fingers to touch the buttons like it did with the old stick . Also with that button layout I find it easier to have my thumb resting on light kick, forefinger on light punch, middle finger on med. punch and ring finger on heavy punch. This was no accident, I like to play as Akuma and Shin Akuma so I wanted to be able to bust out shun goku satsu in the blink of an eye. As for the stick it’s slightly off centre so that with my left arm not being square to the edges, down on the stick is a little off to the side (something I call the lazyboy angle). please refer to the photo supplied. http://i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy348/bluntman_exe/Photo18-10-1405435.jpg

It’s nice to hear I’m not the only one who has opted for this type of layout I’ll have a more detailed look at other peoples photos with time seeing as there’s 584 pages in this thread alone. To answer your question I play it in an upright position with the stick between my legs similar to how I hold a pad except that a pad is held held higher around chest height.

edit while it may appear as though the layout was done in a way that would avoid drilling through the PS2 logo. I can confirm this wasn’t the case. While I did want to preserve that logo for aesthetics and because it’s part of the PS2’s visual language, ergonomics and practicality were the priorities and if push had come to shove I would’ve drilled through it if I’d deemed it necessary.

Thanks, but don’t be too bummed about the use of a silver fat PS2, it had quite a few superficial scratches. I thought about trying to put the innards of a regular black PS2 into it and using the black PS2 shell for this but I didn’t want to try and smooth out the scratches on it. It felt right to leave the scratches on the silver shell if it’s used as a fight stick as they look to me like battle scars in that context.

actually the only things soldered are the wires connecting to the button contacts. The wires from the PS1 controller board aren’t soldered on they’re screwed to the conductive contact pads which for the past year has been surprisingly reliable. And the wires from the PS1 controller were twisted together with the wires from the stick and buttons and then taped over. I know that must sound very unimpressive but all I did was connect it up in the way that was easiest to connect and disconnect should something go wrong. And believe it or not in the 6 or so months in which this has been on active duty there has been only one time that I needed to check the wiring (when the start button was playing up). And when I checked the controller board to make sure the wire contact was still good, all I had to do was release the wire holding everything together to be able to move the controller board and to trace out the wires. All up this was a very swift process which eliminated that as the cause of the problem. As previously mentioned the cause was confirmed to be the problem of the top half moving during play which has since been addressed. And because the wiring and controller board are held tightly in place the wiring and connections have been fine. In fact when I start upgrading it to make it able to interface with a PS3 controller, one of the biggest challenges I expect to face when increasing the presentability of the wiring will be changing the wiring in a way that doesn’t reduce the ease of serviceability that it currently has. As it is, the presentablity of the wiring doesn’t concern me as the only time I open it up is to demonstrate that it’s not held together with screws.

That’s my second design in sketchup. What do you think of it? What would you add/change?

Make it 6 button :stuck_out_tongue:

@caballeroā€Œ …looks solid… I agree with @"Pnoy Pryde"ā€Œ make it 6 button and if you need the 8 button for functionality , you could always pur 2 buttons on right side.

Don’t listen to the purists. Make it 8 buttons if your heart so desires. Especially if you play Tekken.

It’s not like the fighting game Gods will smite thee for not making it 6… :\

Or will they?

madcatz sticks use a 8 button layout, I cut my teeth on those (with regard to home play), so I use 8-button.

There’s a significant utility to having 4 buttons across, especially if you use the stick for games other than 1 specific fighter.

there’s nothing purist about a 6-button layout unless you feel like arcade machines hadn’t been built prior to SF2 (which probably isn’t the first 6 button game, but it’s my mental go-to for the popularization of it).

Less heresy and more Stick porn photos

Some of you over-zealous losers who took JDM’s joke too seriously, need take a step back and continue doing so until you encounter oncoming traffic.

Fucking 09’er shit.

Apparently the :stuck_out_tongue: face isn’t enough to denote a joke post or post out of jest…

Finished up a HRAP3 dualmod with a MadCatz 4716 Rev. A
Also dropped in PS-14-Gs and button plugs (as previously seen).

All of the work was streamed on hangouts these past two weekends.

Here’s a link to annotated images describing the process.

Can I ask you for the .PSD file for that artwork??? Amazing work man

I think its time to post some of the custom sticks I have made. I will do that later today

I’ll just show the two foe hammers that I only bought the case and then did everything else solo.

And my personal favorite is the spider man stick

Finally finished the waiting game with Art; totally worth it though, the man’s work is legendary. I nearly had a fucking aneurysm while putting the buttons together but I think I did a decent enough job. Now if only I could get good at the game.

Apparently BB code hates my guts. Thought it was my phone doing strange things but I’ll just let it rock then. Image tags OP.

Here’s a tip for posting images - type the url in between

so we don’t have to click on the link.

Nice art, by the way.
