Character Select Fan Art Challenge

spiffling piece chain. YOu should be please with the result cus its slamming. I’m not sure what everything in sfmc’s crit means hahaha . But the green shows a triangle pointing to where the action is and the counter (red) is to counter the implied lines made by the clouds and the green shapes right?

Here’s mine!

rook:
holy mother of…!
that Sagat!

i’m suddenly inspired yet at the same time, more than slightly discouraged from trying :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Rook oh rook. That Sagat is simply awesome. Looking at that pic alone makes me want to whip up my tablet and draw something to match your talent, but I doubt I could come close to it.:bgrin: Bravo!!!

[on a side note, I gota put this project on halt. Busy times.]

Ok back to lurking mode now…

Sagat… kind of reminds of an Ape.

http://studentpages.scad.edu/~skelle22/art/random/sk_sagat.jpg

EDIT: Made Ron’s corrections.

SFMC: Wow, awesome lesson, dude. Thanks a lot. Hehe, I ain’t no pro yet. All of that stuff you went over, in theory, I learned and know, but we all know there is a large gap between knowledge and application. I clearly needed the reminder to put my education to use. Thanks for the wakeup call. I think I’ll rework the BG and repost it later; that should be a relatively quick fix that will make a lot of difference. The figures I’ll leave be because I think I’d rather move on to the next pic than spend more hours reworking this one, haha.

DFist: While those three elements do work well together for the overall composition, I think the main purpose of the green shapes was to show that a pose with an interesting silhouette that has negative shapes in it is much better than a lumpy mass.

Switcher: Cool stuff. Nothin wrong with learning by redrawing existing art, but I think you are a mature enough artist now that you can start developing your own poses and compositions. Give it a try man

Twelve: Sorry to see ya go man; I love your art. But if you’re busy, you’re busy. Good luck with all things.

Bandit: Hell yeah, I love the ape-like exaggeration. I think this type of cartooney exaggeration is much more up your alley. It’s very fun looking. Watch that collarbone. It only needs the line at the top, not the bottom. Also, make sure your cast shadow matches your figure. His shadow’s legs are a bit on the thick side, comparitively.

Eh, you’ll come to realize that my comments are often composed more of my opinion (likes and dislikes) than actual suggestions to improve. I’m not anywhere near an expert with anatomy, lighting, and all that jazz, but many people around here are… so hell, go pester them. That’s what they’re here for. :stuck_out_tongue: Haha, okay… that was just a little thing I thought I’d point out. ^^;

The Switcher - I like the raw power and intensity in this - the sketchiness seems to reinforce it. My only issue is with his head… I think it’s a little too small compared to the rest of his bulk. His left pec also seems a little strange (dipping a tad low, maybe?), but it could just be me. ^^;; Otherwise, good work.

BanditChain - I am a sucker for gag illustrations. I was wondering if they were actually welcome in this thread, and it seems they are, which is great. I thought maybe you could add some more shading in his arms to really define some muscle. His “gorilla-pout” is hilarious, though.

Lookit at me I’m DOUBLE LEELA ! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!

Anyway, thats my quick Sagat.

Here’s a slightly better version of my Sagat (i hope). Cut some grass off the background and changed the shading on the shorts.

^ Live action movie sagat?

Hey dudes. For some reason I can’t seem to upload to my FTP. I started to update the gallery, but then part of the way through, it just quit. So, no gallery update for now. I’ll try again soon. Here my Sagats though.

Here’s a tweaked version of the Sagat vs Ryu. Redid the bg and tweaked some colors. Hehe, not sure if they colors actually came out better though. The original version was done at the computers at my work, which have better monitors, and this one was finalized on my own crappy laptop.:

And here’s an inked drawing of him. Didn’t feel like coloring it this time. Hehe, the anatomy got just a little whacked out, but I had fun with the inking:

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/254/ronchan22ki.jpg

Jashugan, Scabrous and Vega-X: Please give me your info so that I can add you to the participating artists list.

VSlash: Looks good man. You definately captured the feel of Sagat. I think the scar is looking just a bit too jagged. Otherwise, great sketch.

Vega-X: Very sweet style, man. Love the textures that you’ve got going on.

I hate you.

Your scar looks like someone threw hamburger at Sagats chest ! TAKE THAT.

I hate this challenge and I hate all of you.

damn that new sagat is sick, chain. Very solid lookin. here’s my akuma haha the head looks terrible. I tried to change it a few time but it still end up looking like he has a squished head instead of looking down. he’s suppose to be taking off the beads and putting it on the grave of who knows!!!

http://img370.imageshack.us/img370/1088/akumaweak0wf.jpg

I just realize most of my pictures have the head always in the same vertical axis. I was thinking it may be convinient to have the head not tilting up or down but it certainly limits you. Time to practice! Draw 1000 heads.

Thats what I did, or well, am still doing

I like the premise of your picture a lot, for some reason it reminds of John Lennon.

vega-x: That actually looks really nice. I’d love to see more in that style =).

Chain: Well I’ll never fault anyone for their anatomy, seeing as how I’m pretty liberal with mine =). Your inking’s good as ever… I wish I has a tablet pc to do stuff like that. I could pencil more shadows into all my stuff to add that ink effect (and I do sometimes) but sometimes that just seems lame.

Dreaded fist: … hmm yeah that Akuma’s head looks a bit off. Here’s a few pointers that work for me when I try to draw lowered heads or heads from a bird’s-eye view from that particular angle you’re using. If you like you can use them for future reference =). I’m not an expert or anything… but i do have this book called “How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way” LOL :lame:. Please excuse the bad handwriting… not my strong suit.

.

Here’s my Sagat. Sorry to disappoint. Not enough time to complete or make it look cool. Better a sketch than nothing eh? It still took like 3 plus hours.

Tried for an action pose rather than the usual “posing” poses. Heh. Face referenced from Joe Mad. I need more face practice from Mad! the man!

Oops… I forgot his scar. Blasphemy!

http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/5103/sagat8kv.jpg

There’s some crazy stuff being posted here!

El Suave
Really nice Ken! Only thing is, try not to draw on lined paper. Imagine if you did a really awesome piece and it was on ruled paper…

Dreaded Fist
Man who’s the author of that anatomy book? I feel like getting my hands on it. Incredible shading and values on that.

Yup! Practice is good! Even I had to copy my head from Joe Mad’s stuff.

Nice work on Akuma’s clothes. I could never make it look that good. Well… give me a couple years… heh.

BanditChain
Cool Akuma! Could try making him a little bulkier… that might help some. Heh heh… is that another melancholy Sagat?

ak-UMAR
Not bad. I really like the classic background. It’s good you corrected the shading. Keep drawing, you’ll get better!

Rook
Rook, oh Rook… sickest Sagat ever! Just a minor crit… the knee cap typically does not cover the whole knee joint, so you could draw it a bit smaller.

Just like your Sagat, drawings become infinitely better when you have a story to tell, or an idea to depict. Really really like your pic!

Ron
Cool stuff! Especially the inked Sagat!

Heh heh… about the “no inks”, I actually meant pencils without inks. Would really like to see your stuff without the traditional feathering and blacks and all. But all paint is cool too! I guess it turned out as a good learning experience eh? The Ryu is very well done, but the Sagat would be much better if you followed SFMC’s pose. Dynamic posing with dynamic perspective and colour = mind blowing! Not forgetting his tips on composition either.

What is it they say…? When drawing action poses, it’s best to have the action at the wind up (start up), or at the end (during follow through of the punch/kick etc). Best not to put the pose in-between. Makes the pose look weak. Heck, what am I saying, you already know all this stuff…

Did I say the inked Sagat was awesome? Heh.

The Switcher
Cool pic dude! The scratchy lines really help to bring out the mood.

ViscousSlash
I guess all them head drawings paid off! Nice looking Sagat you have there! I like it! A few pointers though… The collar bone (clavicle) goes from below the neck and ends up above the shoulder. Take a look at your own to see. You could also try giving your Sagat a little more ribcage inbetween the chest and abs so his body won’t look so short.

vega-x
Holy…! Good stuff man! Is good to see more realistic styled stuff here. Keep 'em coming!

greyhoundbus
Really great to see crits and pointers from even beginning artists. Stuff like yours really helps! One doesn’t have to be an expert in everything, but one can help others in the areas one knows.

This thread is awesome!

sweet sagat landel! Very dynamic pose. Anatomy on point again. I would do two things to it to make it better. That is to have the eyepatch string curve the other way. upward instead of downward. And put some forshorten on his left arm. If you have the the elbow where the fold in his arm is, that’ll be perfect. The author of that book is “stephen Rogers peck” very good book. I’ve only been reading the bones part and then skimming through the rest. I should really get down and read/study the whole thing!

here’s the semi fixed akuma. thx to greyhound for the tip. i kinda knew about drawing the head in a cube but applying it is something else.

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/6804/akumaweak7au.jpg

Landel: That’s a nice Sagat… very dynamic!

DreadedFist: That head looks much better =). I guess he’s just looking straight ahead now huh? I actually rarely draw boxes… I kinda included that at the last minute just in case it helps. I think I just wing it mostly these days… stick figures are as far as i go to set up a composition.

Well here’s me trying to improve my technique with lighting and shadows. I’m not sure I got it quite right yet, and I’m still a little skittish about using heavy blacks… I may get bolder in the future. I should have all my future guys leaping out of a fire. I’ll get lots of practice then LOL.

Bison from Charlie’s SFA3 ending:

http://www.poor-spirit.com/art/BisonFinal.jpg

Got my FTP issues sorted out, thanks to Blazed of Combovideos.com. Thanks dude! So, the gallery has been updated.

VSlash: It’s hard to tell if you are joking or if you are serious, or maybe a little bit of both, due to the nature of the internet. But in any case, you’re right my Sagat’s scar totally looks like ground beef, haha. If you would rather I not critique your stuff from now on, that’s cool. Let me know.

DFist: Very cool man. In my mind, he’s putting it on Gen’s grave. The second version’s head is lookin better, but still just a little shrunken. Hehe changing angles can be difficult. I have problems with a view from below especially. Greyhound had a good sketch. It’s a delicate balance of changine angles and overlapping forms.

Lol, ya don’t need a tablet to ink like that. I rarely every ink digitally; don’t really like the feel of it. I prefer to use a brush or a brush pen.

Landel: Looks good man. Great action pose. I agree with DFist on the critique. The eyepatch band would make more sense wrapping under his ear. Tsk, tsk on forgetting the scar, lol. That’ ok though, I guess we’re both scar-retarded, because on my inked one, I have them facing the wrong way, and I forgot the scar on his head too.

EDIT: Whoops. Looks like you snuck in there while I was typing mine, Greyhound. Nice Bison! The lighting on this one actually looks really good man. Bravo. Love the torn cape. My only critiques are that his facial structure looks just a little on the lumpy side, and that it might be cool to see some of those purples in the bg find a little bit of their way onto the figure too. Good stuff man!
