I’m curious to see how many matchups you think he loses. Imo he beats probably 3 or 4 characters, and has quite a few 50/50 matchups.
I’m not sure why you’re saying this. Is it only the super into U1 that’s worrying you? Dee Jay didn’t get any nerfs, and none of his bad matchups really gained new tools to beat him with (depending on who you think the matchups he “outright loses” are, which I’d be interested in knowing). His standing mp. buff isn’t a “noob” buff in any sense, and depending on how good the hitbox is now, could have given him a solid new tool. His sobat damage buff is just good. Doesn’t give him any new options, but lets him get more damage per combo, something Dee Jay has always sorely lacked, especially meterless.
His max out buff doesn’t really make him a better character, I’ll grant, since as I said it only punishes poor play less, rather than rewarding good play. But it’s still not a nerf. And it’s not really a noob buff since it’s just restoring the status quo from Super, for that move.
Ultimately, it’s up for debate whether these buffs are really going to make Dee Jay rocket up through the tier lists (although if EX MGU connects into decent, Boxer style hits with U1, I think he will do a lot better.) I don’t really see an argument for Dee Jay actually going DOWN in the tier lists though.
DJ has a bad match up against him self
Nah like I said DJ’s middle ground…even if you gave cr. hp overhead, old lk sobat, etc he still wont be god tier. DJ might lose to some the old top chars on paper…but that doesnt mean he lacks fundementals needed to actually win…you just have to outplay.
That said…I still think he needs some tweeking…these are biggest issues to me in some match ups : Lk sobat recovery( why is a move like this punishable on block when we have moves like burn kicks safe… which has way more uses), cr.lp x2-machin upper missing some of the cast…you can say “just use lp->cr.mp”…but even that misses some people…and what need is there for a bnb combo like that to include a 1F link…cr.lp x2-> st.mk isnt a fair alternative because you lose down charge. And the lack of a (3f?) jab…but I can kinda look past that…
Dirty details like this is what I think capcom are missing…They’re looking at all the “blaring problems” when they should be tweeking everybody to become solid. I bet if we were to cry that Deejay has a impossible Sim matchup I bet they’d make slide hit invuln to fix it. Ugh.
Deejay is going down because other characters are going up.
DJ didn’t get any nerfs but the whole bottom tier got buffs. DJ bad matchups didn’t get anything new but they still beat him. Yun and Yang matchups are debatable for '12 but Fei Long will still beat DJ. Gief, Makoto, Abel, Sim, Rose, Guile, Viper, and Seth will still beat him. I think DJ beats Ibuki, Cody and Juri but in 2012, those characters are getting major buffs. Hakan and Guy are even MU in AE but that most likely will change. So how many middle to top tier does DJ really beat? Maybe Cammy and Rufus. Maybe Ryu, but that’s debatable. That’s it. DJ will beat Dan and T.Hawk. That sounds 30ish on the tier list to me, but I will still smash fools. No reversal/escape options, bad back dash, subpar normals, five frame cr.lk that you can’t link into is awful in SF4s meta game.
I already explained how I feel about DJs buffs. st.mp is great because it has good damage and an extended hit box. The extended hitbox is irrelevant to me because I would use another AA that would take more damage and possibly juggle the opponent. St.mp starts up in 7 frames, so you can’t link anything into it. that move doesn’t even hit crouching opponets so you can’t even use it as a frame trap.
These buffs will not change his matchups. They will only make him easier to use.
I’d agree on grapplers, Makoto and Fei, but I’m seeing Even for the rest of those, can’t see Cody getting any harder, or Guy or Ibuki…
Hakan even? Guy even?
Perhaps the stand MP will hit crouching opponents now, who knows…
Cody most def got harder. A big part of that match-up was that you could basically get as cute as you wanted to on his wake-up, because his reversal options were pants (or at least pants against Deejay). Now with an FADCable Bad Spray that can lead to ultra… I don’t even have to say it.
And a jumping lp with 10 active frames? Challenging him in the air will potentially be a whole lot harder as well.
Believe it or not, Hakan is even with DJ. Hakan option select game gives DJ some serious problems. Most Hakans are ass so you might get away with bs against the regulars. Guy is also even.
If DJ is so solid, why is he one of the least played characters in the game? Why we don’t see him in Japan tournies?
I don’t like this whole discussion of Dee jay going down in tiers. Sure he’s not upper mid, but he’ll deff still rock the mid-mid
So he can still win. He’s a lot like Ryu IMO
He is mid but Japan doesn’t think so. He won’t stay mid if the lower tier and mid tier is improving and his bad matchups stay bad. He is gonna drop down. Any character can win a match so that’s not saying anything. And comparing Ryu and DJ…c’mon son
why can’t DJ have a overhead move? Or instant knee shot more instant.
I don’t think I’ve ever been hit by Bad Spray. Like, ever. Doesn’t really matter if you can FADC to me. We have yet to see whether the knife will become playable for Cody, but the only buff he got that really worries me is his walk speed. Everything else is just meh.
I think pretty much every character’s community is going to bemoan the insignificance of their buffs and the enormity of every other character’s buffs. You’ll see conversations similar to this on the boards for every low-tier character that got buffed, I’m sure.
I pretty much think you’re being massively pessimistic about Dee Jay’s matchups, even now. As regards this Dee Jay in tourneys, Seth didn’t get played much in Japanese tourneys, hell he still doesn’t. Most people only know Hiropon. Yet few would now say that the character isn’t a contender for winning any major tournament. Same thing happened for Adon last year with Gamerbee, and it’s happening on a smaller scale now with Uryo and Sakura. All it really takes is for a character specialist to nail the metagame and show everyone the potential of an overlooked character. The Japanese SF community doesn’t have perfect knowledge of how good each character is.
As for Dee Jay only beating Dan and T.Hawk, I don’t agree at all, but even if that were the case, it wouldn’t make him 30th on the tier list. One of Dee Jay’s strengths is that he has so many even matchups, and almost no matchups he has no chance in (7-3 or worse). Without getting bogged down in theory fighter over whether Dee Jay is 6-4 or 5-5 with whatever character, I think Dee Jay is currently mid-mid tier and will pretty much remain as such in 2012.
I’m starting to think Dee Jay is more of a play the person than to play their char.
'Cause people are ignorant as FUCK about most of the new super characters. I would say a good half of them have most people just talking out their ass about them, throwing them in a tier list when they forget.
Hakan’s crazy OS’s that are all beaten by crouching?
Dee-Jay would be GREAT if fireballs were more useful in this game. The problem is he has to advance forward at some point, and that requires giving up charge. His normals are mediocre, he has no overhead, his best ultra is the hardest setup in the game, and I’ve personally found that some of his AA normals trade way too often. His sobat could also be much safer, his up-kicks get killed by safe-jumps and crouching attacks, and his focus attack is average. He also has a poor chip-damage game.
But honestly speaking, SF4 is a shitty game so why even care. Let’s pray they make a real Dee-Jay for SF5, he’s such a fun character to play.
Yes, please negate your whole point with the last sentence.
No, I’m not being pessimistic. I’m not in make believe land. DJ buffs won’t help him enough matchup wise. Capcom can keep the super xx U1, more damage on sobat kicks and the st.mp buff. I would rather have the old lk sobat back and a EX MGU with more invincibility. That would be better for this meta game
The SF4 engine does not help a character such as Dee-Jay. Capcom should have decided what they wanted to make him at the beginning, whether it be a master zoner or a rushdown beast. Zoner? Give him a sonic-boom-like fireball. Rushdown? Give him some more safe options and mixups. That’s why he’s only a decent character.
EDIT: He’ll still lose to Fei, Yun, Yang, Akuma, Guile, Chun-Li, Ken, and others. Ryu will probably be a hard match just based on his fireball. It says alot when the recent tier list has him at 5-5 with Honda, a character he used to dominate (in a different game, no less, but still).
