I am also having this problem with firefox. Very annoying.
I get this on firefox 5 also.
This has already been confirmed to be an issue with FireFox and NoScript. Stop using them!
I think I’d rather go through the trouble of enabling youtube when I want to watch a video if it means I can forbid complexmedianetwork.com and never see that damned bar.
Yeah, pretty much this right here, but NoScript is just too useful to give up.
lol, that’s not a very good reason to stop using something. The site should be able to work regardless. (I’m also having this problem by the way). Or has it already been determined that there will be no fix?
I’d personally first check the embedding code to make sure there isn’t anything goofy in there. Make sure the tags are right
So you have a modification installed that proactively goes into a page, RIPS IT APART… which is DESIGNED to make certain parts of a website STOP WORKING… and you’re complaining that a website doesn’t work with this particular mod installed? Complain to the people who created NoScript; not Shoryuken. Shoryuken works fine; its these HACKS, and yes, NoScript is a HACK that breaks the website.
The whole idea of NoScript itself is counter-intuitive to PROGRESS. Websites use scripting, get over it.
That would be a good point if we weren’t enabling both youtube and shoryuken scripting, but we are. In fact, enabling all scripts still doesn’t work.
If we can get word that it is indeed noscript being broken that’s the problem and not shoryuken, I could understand. But I have the feeling that it’s a problem with code written during this site rehaul instead, and adding firefox/noscript makes the error visually display.
No-Script is counter-intuitive to progress in the same way that AdBlock is counter-intuitive to progress (read: neither one of them is).
Nobody has a problem with sites using scripting, and it is rare to find someone that browses with ALL scripts disabled (and even if they do, it’s most likely due to bandwidth issues). The majority of NS users are using it to stop certain annoying elements on sites from running (see: Complex Media Network, BGMs in pages that aren’t able to be disabled, redirecting scripts, etc.)…the same reason people use AdBlock.
I understand your annoyance with the use of NS, both as a coder and a site admin, but you also must understand where the users are coming from. Telling people to ‘get over it’ is useless and even slightly antagonistic. Of course, this is all a non-issue now as the problem has been fixed in the latest version of Firefox Aurora. Yes, I have Youtube allowed and ComplexMediaNetwork forbidden and all threads with Youtube links display normally (even with Greasemonkey and Kyle’s Old School Black installed) on SRK and 8WR.
I think you guys are missing the point. Not only do websites require scripting these days, but websites also require ads! A website like SRK, requires a massive amount of funding to keep running; its so huge that it requires its own CDN cloud to handle spikes in traffic. Without these ads, SRK wouldn’t be able to stay up and running.
By running NoScript, you are not only limiting the progress of scripting and forcing degradation (thankfully, XenForo degrades gracefully so the forums will still work without scripting, just wont look as nice), but you are also taking income away from the people who pay for SRK. Which of course limits the progress of SRK in general because now they can’t afford to keep the website up and running, let alone afford to pay for things in order to make the experience better for YOU.
Frankly, if I was MrWiz or any of the other owners of SRK, I would outright refuse to give support to anyone whom I know is using NoScript.
You will be getting ZERO support on this issue.
Perhaps if the ads weren’t so intrusive then I would consider allowing them to show. As it is, the Complex Media bar is not only incredibly intrusive but also EXTREMELY irrelevant. This goes double for the atrocious Nokia ads that play music and other sorts. While SRK is a free site for users (and thus I pay nothing to use it), I’d like to believe that I can still ‘vote with my wallet’ and show the admins (Wiz et al.) that the CMN toolbar is vastly unwanted.
(Note: I allow ads on other sites that I visit frequently: Reddit, 4chan, etc. I believe in supporting them as best I can. I’d even purchase a premium membership or some apparel from the SRK store if: a) premium had useful features/perks and b) most of the merch in the SRK store wasn’t bloody terrible. I deeply appreciate both the site and forums and would like to show support, but the options for that are unattractive at best.)
As far as script progress and degradation, I can only say that I disagree with you there.
Again, you act like we’re blocking shoryuken scripts, which isn’t true. I enabled ALL scripts and it still did not work. If we’re not getting support on the issue, so be it. Supposedly it works properly again on FF 7/8 according to the above post.
How can you act like noscript is such a terrible thing when it protects computers on a regular basis? Was there not just a malware outbreak from this site, which are generally almost always caused by ads? (Have gotten malware (and god knows what else) from browsing 2 times now)
No one wants to cost Shoryuken money, but people have to look out for themselves too.
Ads are a moot point, irrelevant to this thread. They have already been discussed elsewhere, and the benefits of the new 90s-gif-banner-esque ads clearly outweigh the downsides from a financial point of view or the site would have switched back to the old ads by now. No need to derail the thread beating a dead horse.
On the subject of NoScript, dstln is correct to say that it does a good job of preventing certain types of malware from spreading through scripting exploits. Frankly, browsing with scripts universally enabled is insecure at best. NoScript provides an easy way to selectively whitelist sites and allow their scripts to run, preventing the degradation that would come with the alternative security-conscious option (disabling your browser from using scripts at all). It also provides the utility to prevent scripts from certain websites from running on specific others, allowing (for example) Facebook to work but decreasing its ability to track your offsite activity. It is that utility which allowed me to create my rule to specifically forbid Youtube on SRK and fix this bug. In short, it allows the internet to be used in relative security without all of the downsides of a global script ban.
I haven’t shared the rule with anyone because not only is it irrelavant now thanks to the recent Aurora build, but also because it seems unpopular amongst site admins (and I don’t really want to get banned).
Hmmm, not having the issue anymore with NoScript 2.1.2.4rc1.
Wish I could say the same. I don’t even block the ads on this site and it still does it.
For example this thread:
http://forums.shoryuken.com/t/guiles-going-to-evo/129540page-2
The last post is supposed to be Dagger G’s, however I can’t see anything after Steril707 quoted an embedded YT video on page 2.
I am using Firefox 5 with NoScript and Adblocker.
I’m on Mozilla Aurora 7.0a2 with Noscript 2.1.2.6rc7. The only sites blocked from me are complexmedianetwork.com and skimresources.com. Make sure you’re up to date on everything and only block those two sites. Also, try clearing your temp. internet files and cache.
