at first thats what i thaught you guys were reffering too, but that other one look sfreakin awesom

It appears to either have a Sanwa JLF w/shaft cover (most likely) or Seimitsu LS-56 for the joystick and Sanwa buttons (almost all Japanese cabs use Sanwa for the buttons)

Anyway, it will be inspired in the Vewlix, not a copy. I like the shape of this cab.

I have a couple of questions, before I’ll start building one like these - hope you guys can help me.

  1. If I use a TV (those CRT old TVs… no LCD or shit) as monitor, would I’ll be able to take the “TV case” (don’t know how to name it… you know, the plastic case) to reduce the space required (without dying while taking it out because of electric shocks… yay)

  2. Can the TV be in a vertical position? Because I’m planning to make it rotative, so I can play those Shmup the way they we’re meant to play.

  3. Will the MDF be strong enough to hold a TV? I suppose I’ll have to add extra strength to the TV base with something else, right?

  4. Is there a way that I can wire a WINNER light for the cab from a PC with MAME?

That’s it for now. Thanks doods

vewlix?
the cabs sf4 were running on

btw

two candy cabs were made by an srk member too

yeah, these are those at Aussie Arcade, the link is at 4-5 posts back…

any help with my Q’s?

Dang it TMO! Great minds thinking alike can be frustrating when it is your archrival. However, I am willing to believe that it would be hard not to have the idea of making a vewlix inspired CP/stick just by taking one look at it. Its sharp lines and 45ed edges make the vewlix cp seem like it was inspired by a stick and not the other way around.

  1. Whoa Kabal! We don’t want you to die like you was attacked by Blanka or something! While you probably could take it apart by yourself, I wouldn’t recommend it until the tube has been discharged. Of course, to discharge it, part of the plastic case has to be taken off…quite the catch 22.
  2. Vertical is a must! But will you be able to tate your TV? You should try it out first to make sure the TV can handle it. I would link you to a “Tate Your TV Tutorial” I found but…I can’t seem to find it now.
  3. Fortification ftw.
  4. It seems feasible. Looking into the Ultimarc LED controller may be a good start.

Great, BP, you made me laugh with the first answer - dind’t think about the good ol’ blanka.

  1. What should I do to discharg it? There was some info in Killer Cabs, but I didn’t understeand a word of it :S
  2. Oh-oh… Does that means that there’s a possibility that I can broke the TV if I try it rotated? Please try to search for that tut…
  3. Yeah
  4. Don’t have a clue on how to make it happen… What could cause something to activate something by just winning? :S I’ll check the Ultimarc LED controller anyway now…

Thanks!

  1. Seriously, I would take it to a TV repair shop and let them do it. I thought about attempting it but…I’d rather not.
  2. I think the risk is that you would break the plastic casing on your TV. Since you won’t have a plastic case, you only have to worry about whether or not your TV will display a clear image in TaTe mode. I can’t find the tut but from some light reading on the shmups forum I can tell you what I have learned.
First, after your TV has been off for awhile put it on its side. Don’t turn it on yet.
After 15-20 minutes try turning it on.
If your TV has a strong enough degaussing coil (the thing that makes that audible sound when you first turn your TV on) then it should all be clear and ready to go.
Admittedly, I am a little sketchy on the whole process…I usually Tate my old computer monitor for shmups and it has a vertical option along with a degauss button. I haven’t done it with a regular TV yet. If anyone has more info on this, feel free to share.

it shouldnt break the tv if u rotate it, i used to rotate my old tv when i was playing my xbox emu’s., but if its turned on b4 rotating, it makes purple spots on the picture, like magnets do, but whenever i turned it b4 powering it on, all was well. not too sure if it will be the same for all tv’s though…

Big Pockets, Pempoii

That’s very clear for me now. For the discharging thing, I’ll take it to a TV repair shop, can’t be very expensive though, possible the best solution I guess - don’t wanna die…
I’ll try to rotate my TV with a soft cloth over the table, to minimize the risk to break the case.
Thanks for those useful tips!!

But I’ve got a new question :frowning: yeah, sorry

Would there be a problem if I put some PC speakers close to the TV while it doesn’t have it’s case? Like in the mini candy cabinet showed in this thread…

Degauss when you tate your monitor, but yes, it’s nearly safe.

As far as #4, MAME doesn’t report who won/lost, so, no.

Taiki,

your first answer is about rotating the TV, right? How can I degauss it?

Yeah, I thought it didn’t. Thanks for the aclaration anyway

If your tube has no degauss button on it, turning it off/on will do the job.

(Although if you have the tv out of the plastic housing and using it bare, having it off is a good idea anyway)

Thanks for the aclaration. The “gauss” in the monitor is caused mainly because of it being close to a magnetic field, like a PC speaker? If it is, then, even if I degauss the monitor every time this happens, it will happen again, because of the speaker being in the same place? Is there any way to prevent this?

Speakers that are made for TV/PC applications are generally shielded. However, if you open up your speakers and find that the magnets aren’t shielded…you can buy some mag-shield here.
Lizard Lick also sells some 5.5" shielded speakers for arcade applications for a reasonable price.

Great! This is going somewhere…

how much money will cost to do this?

is it cheaper than the orig arcade cabs?

I read somewhere that it was cheaper to build 2 wooden candy cabs, than buying one like an astrocity or something… Don’t know how much is this going to cost anyway. Try to search in the links in this thread.
