Here’s what some people did last year. They bought a flight from Toronto to LA, and that flight had a lay-over in Calgary on the way there and on the way back. That flight was about $350. They just ended up doing that rather than paying $600. I can’t recall if they suffered any grief for that or not but I’d say it’s something worth looking into.
