Can a new FG make it big?

Well in my local scene, KoF is actually very popular. At our last tournament, KoF was actually more hype than AE. And I have also heard, that most of our scene will be on Skullgirls. However, there are some communities out there who are not interested in skullgirls. Most of them have not seen the game, and its not that they want to dislike the game, but they just have not been properly introduced to the game. So the question is, How do properly introduce this game to skeptics?

YOU BE TROLLIN!!! Didn’t SNK say they wouldn’t work with capcom again?

that was an april fools joke like a year ago…

what I am saying is that they should FUCKING MAKE another game like cvs2. you know…with some variety and not gay/boring like shittyfighter4.

oh…ok then.

As much as you never hear people talk about it now, Guilty Gear was actually the most popular game at a lot of majors around 2006-2008. It’s important to realize that they really had to struggle to get it to that point though. Running their own local gatherings and regional tournaments, not relying on Capcom-focused events who will inevitably shaft you in favor of their preferred games when push comes to shove. Melty Blood and MK9 were the same way. If you want this game to be big, it can happen, but you’ll have to work for it.

Goddamn you Snaaaake!
No wonder you have Wesker as your avatar. Asshole…! the wound still burns!

OT: At get-togethers or small tournaments, instead of popping in Ultimate Bullshit, why don’t play some Based Broads instead!

I won’t be playing skullgirls but I’m sure die hard fighting game fans will. Depending on how much money they put into it they should be golden; especially with SRK pushing it.

One more thing, it’ll be cheap. People are fucking bums so a $15 game has a chance of players at least trying it (moreso than other “fringe” games, especially when talking about PS2 only or import titles). Plus hopefully a good demo as well.

15$? I heard 30 (which would still be cheap)?! Any source on that? 15 seems way too low.

That’s a good point. GG managed with fucking non-US release Slash which required a swap magic to even play.

Nothing exact but we’ve been told it will cost around what comparable XBLA/PSN games cost which would be 15$.

Yeah there’s only been a couple of smaller articles and a possible twitter leak that I don’t feel like trying to find (if it exists) that point to a $15 price. With what they plan on doing with DLC I don’t think it’s that low. No way it would be more than $20, for sure.

It was said that the maximum price for games on XBLA is 1200 MSP, which is equivalent to $15. A couple of games broke this restriction somehow, but I don’t think Skullgirls will.

im gonna sig this if you dont mind

This new fighting game certainly has made it big.

This is it in a nutshell. Because this isn’t a big name company just deciding to making a new fighting game its going to need a much larger push from the playerbase to get “big”. Its not going to be an overnight thing either. We will have to work at it. Everyone can do their part. Something as small as showing a new player where to find good match videos to something as big as hosting a Skullgirls tournament in your hometown are the types of things that we will need to do to get this game over.

The best part is that Reverge is doing an awesome job on their part by making the game (in my opinion) better than a lot of options out there. Most people are convinced just by playing that first game or two. So invite a friend of a friend over when the game drops and let him or her get a good look at it in person. Show them Chibi’s blog (hopefully out by that time), or maybe point them to a Youtube channel (of which their should be many). Have a mini tournament to see who buys the drinks at the movie theatre. Plenty of ways to get them to try out that one game. That’s all most people will need.

Actually, I think if they really wanted the game to “make it big”, then instead they would have to accept a big risk of losing money, and release an easily-pirateable PC version. With the console versions being downloadable only, it makes it hard to bring the game to friend’s houses and so forth. The beauty of a PC version is that you can have all the patches and whatever, copy the entire thing onto a harddrive and then take it to your friends or work and play the game there. If they like it they can take it home and practice, and word of mouth spreads.
The only legal alternative might be a F2P game with cash items, but it’s hard to imagine how to make that work in a 2D FG with no costumes and so forth.

This kind of easy viral nature is what makes GGPO+roms so appealing. Excellent games that you can share and play with your friends easily, any time. But it’s hard to monetise, sadly.

Also PSN and XBLA might not carry the game if it has such a PC version.

It’s certainly easier to move around an external hard drive, but I don’t really believe its that much harder to take your PS3 or Xbox to a friend’s house. Its no different then taking a tv/monitor over for system link.

I’ve already talked to a few friends about picking up the game and I know most of them will. If anyone needs more convincing I’ll take the few minutes to disconnect my Xbox to show them why they need to hop on the band wagon.

Yeah, it’s not much trouble to bring a xbox with you, I take it anywhere it might get played.
