Calling All Anglers, Get In Here With Your Fishing Stories

I live by a marina and I use to go crabbing there a lot as a kid. I used a string with a raw chicken leg attached and a fishing net to catch blue crab. I made a game of how many I could pull up at once. If you’re really gentle on the line, you can pull 3 or 4 at a time. Five was my record. I never liked using a crab pot, they’re too easy and it ruins the fun.

I also went fishing for fluke on a boat. One time, as I was reeling in a fluke, a young mako ate it and got hooked, we released it. The boats Captain said that it’s a fairly common occurrence. I also reeled in a stingray on a different trip.

I RARELY post on SRK at all anymore, mainly used to post for coordination with locals, but this caught my eye.

I haven’t been in about 6 months, but I used to fish about 2-3 times a week about 5 years ago for pretty much 2 or 3 years.
Fishing is fucking awesome, that’s what i’ll say. I prefer saltwater fishing, because after I got into it I learned to make my own sushi and sashimi.
I also just prefer most types of saltwater fishing.

What set up do you use? What rod, reel and line do you use?
Saltwater 7’-8’6" only use 1 piece rods, 2 pieces break way too much in a saltwater enviorment. Reel: old school American Made Penn SS4500 or SS5500, Braided line 50-60LB test(prefer power pro)

What are your go to lures?
Bait, fish love to eat other aquatic life, go with what is tried and true. For artificial bait I’m pretty picky usually old school bucktails and sometimes Live bait on a Chartreuse Jig Head

Do you fish from the shore or have access to a boat?
I have fished from a boat, but I actually prefer to fish from the shore.

Biggest catch
Saltwater
42" Striped Bass
27" Summer Flounder
23" 8LB Tautog

Freshwater
4-5LB Largemouth Bass
1.5 LB Crappie
33" Chain Pickerel

Favorite brands and least favorite
Reel:
old school American made penns
Shimano
Rod:
St. Croix 1pc literally will not use anything else for Saltwater these days.

Seems like you are messing mostly with freshwater, my advice would be to fish for big bluegill/pumpkinseed/Redear (all pan fish) or Crappies, don’t know where you are located, but pound for pound panfish fight so much better than Largemouth bass, I honestly think largemouth bass fishing is overrated. I think the same about saltwater fishing for Striped Bass shit is played and hella lame (just my opinion).
My favorite fish to catch are Tautog or Blackfish, 1 because they are fun to catch and 2 because they are fucking delicious.

As far as cool stories, I don’t have any about catching fish all that much. I almost lost a 20" Blackfish on A jetty under a bridge and jumped half way into the water to grab it. It had flopped off the pavement and fell down into the rocks and was about to get back out in the water, but that shit wasn’t happening lol.

I have been knocked off the Northside Jetty at Indian River Inlet 3 times in my life, Twice by big waves, and once I slipped on moss like a dumbass and nearly got really busted.

There’s a link to where I would spend about 3 days of the week about 5-2 years ago, to give ya an idea of almost how fucked up I got lol, I fell into the Inlet side all 3 times, and of course always during a fast current.

I actually am planning to dust off my gear and try to go at least once a week this year starting in March.
I also have an awesome convenience in that I literally live within walking distance of a the Delaware River, and every spring the Stripers come through there to spawn, during spawning season. I don’t enjoy as much as I used to but, I always try and take someone every year who has never been fishing. Nothing is more enjoyable for a first timer than catching a 30"+ fish and sometimes 2 or 3 of them.

Well that’s my piece, happy I saw this post cause I am definitely going out this year I miss it so much(as crazy as that sounds).

I live in Milwaukee WI and fish freshwater. Do you use any swim baits or glide baits?

i live on west coast (california). I use to always go fishing at the pier since its free lol. I havent gone fishing in almost a year, but i got skunked the last time my friend took me to his fishing spot. I usually stick to piers, but will just fish off shore if the tide/waves dont look too dangerous. I always end up hooking random small fish at the local pier. I’ve caught barracuda but in miniature form lol. I know a few people that kayak off shore and get some crazy good fish. I’m always too scared to learn or even attempt it because im afraid the currents will take me far away and the waves will get bigger unexpectedly. Anyways, here’s random pic of a fish I caught awhile back.

and here’s my friend with a somewhat recent catch. i was hoping to catch some lingcod when i went with him to his spot last year. maybe next time.

those are some pretty cool looking fish.

thanks. im actually debating whether i should go fishing this weekend, or not. And if i do, i gotta decide if im just going to the pier, finding a place off shore either near the highway or at a state beach/park along the coast.

How many rods do you take when you go? What kind of setups do you use?

Bassmaster Classic was this weekend, 1st place took home $300,000.

Bring this back from the dead for a second. Prespawn is just around the corner. Anyone get out there yet? I’m on the fence about getting a kayak to fish out of. Anyone have one they fish from?

Have I got a fish story for you.

They call me Ishmael…

I tried fishing in my childhood with my dad but we never got shit. Went to the piers in San Pedro and rivers in norcal. We only ever caught one retarded looking fish but i think just hanging out with my dad was worth the experience in my younger years

Found out about sheepshead fish yesterday. These fugly things have teeth that look exactly like human teeth, heard they taste good though…
