Calgary Thread 2015

I really think you’re missing the forest for the trees here, but don’t let me stop you from having fun.

here’s a scenario that i encountered in my time with the game. feel free to let me know what i’m missing, since i’m not an expert and i’ve only played for one hour. dauntless does full screen armored rush punch and you end up blocking it, because you can’t spend the entire match fishing for multi-hit normals or specials to stop it, and sometimes you can’t react with throw. you know he hasn’t used DP for a while so he probably has it, but you don’t know if he has kinetic gauge and you’re maybe not even sure which kinetic he picked (for simplicity, let’s say you know he uses kinetic advance, but just wanted to point that out)

what do you do here as, say… a crow player? if dauntless has bar, can you see the power of having safe dp kadc (dash cancel, or jump cancel for crossup against anti-air-less crow while he lets his DP cooldown reset)? do you not think this should be one of his primary options, all the time, and you can kind of do it without worrying about any consequences? because you can do it from crouch block with no worry about missing, can you not anticipate some pretty serious OSes with this move?

in most fighting games, there are times when you throw your face at the opponent, but because of the execution barrier and other factors, you couldn’t solely rely on this technique, or at the very least it’s risky or quite limited to a few moments during a match. in rising thunder i didn’t get that feeling at all. kinetic gauge is readily available (several times a round), and you have no idea if your opponent has it or not (so you just always have to assume he DOES have it, which makes the problem even worse). and any player can do this to you, without thought or care or intention or earned respect, without leaving block. i actually like a lot about 1-button specials so this post is not destroying that idea, but you have to make them have precise purposes with punishment for using them incorrectly. no take backsies.

edit: Got to level 37 in 2 weeks haha. Paladin

Love the soundtrack. Some odd japanese game design decisions… But I’m liking it more the more I play.

EDIt 2 : Oh and I got it on PS4.

Haha, I counted all the loose change I’ve collected in 3 years bartending and it was just under $1000, bought me the PS4, FF14, and BLOODBORNE which I am pretty stoked to play.

Boooo come to Behemoth. Game is cross-play

I would have figured you’d be a Ninja haha. A lot of the weird game decisions get fixed in Heavensward, but vanilla was definitely full of that… and the story wasn’t nearly as good. The music gets eeeven better too. You can kinda tell they were just making the most of assets they already had with the 1-50 content, but Heavensward is like a legit FF game in its own right.

Pocket change is the best. It’s like finding money on the side of the road that you didn’t know you’d get.

i’m playing with my buddys from high school

i really want to get to 50 haha

yeah, i wanted to branch out. i’ve always played knives / stealth / melee class in games and i wanted to go for something completely different. Tanking is really fun. PvE kinda stale but meh figured it would be but dungeons are fun.

What class are you?

I main Machinist. Always been my fave FF job. Guns in that universe are bad ass… I forced myself to branch out as well. I just switched a couple weeks ago 'cus I always heal in these types of games and I’m having a lot more fun doing something different now too.

Tanking gets crazy hard later on PVE. They really ease you in in this game, with most every job, to the point of detriment… but it gets crazy stressful at end game.

oh yeah. the first few dungeons i was leading DPS too. now it gets a lot harder to hold aggro.

is ff14 a monthly subscription?

Yeah

This kind of stuff is always weird because you basically pick a yomi level and decide that’s the one you don’t like. Which is totally fine… but you say if I bait a DP they still get to do something and you assume perfect execution on their followup. But if I have perfect execution, can’t I do a mixup they can’t possibly react to, which makes their DP a blind guess, which means if I guess right I am long gone and I get a free hit on them because they don’t get to take advantage of the KA mechanic? If you go down the map like that you are going to run into stuff you don’t like, but to get there you need to have made poor decisions already.

The game is very decisive. High level SF is decisive too… Rising Thunder is all about removing the barriers to getting to that kind of game. This Dauntless thing, you throw close disc, back+S1. Unless they have super, they get hit after hitting you and always win that trade. Plus if they really are doing it full screen, just can jump back and punish it like that too, or neutral jump H and blow through the armor. If Dauntless just hits you with it, doesn’t he deserve to be rewarded for the read? You failed to make the decision that would stop them from getting in … now they get to do some work.

It’s weird but the situations you want to avoid in SF will happen easier and more frequently in Rising Thunder. You think DPs are a problem, try playing vs either character without DPs (Talos, Crow) and see how they will work you over if you aren’t very proactive

i have no problems with yomi levels, i have problems with safe, invincible DPs that can be made safe by hidden meter (so i have to almost always assume they have it)

if it was JUST kinetic advance, then ok, maybe we could lab up some setups that make DPs whiff on wakeup. wouldn’t fix the half screen armor or low profile slide into DP mixup (never blocking edge slide or dauntless rush is not feasible long term), but ok. but kinetic deflect exists and i think is really good. you basically burst immediately after whiffing a dp, and it can never be baited. you get the damage of your first attack (so i guess you use raw super if you have it), and then he bursts all further damage. there’s no decision making here, it’s just always do it. you don’t use the meter for anything else.

if DPs were a hard commitment, then go ahead and do your -1 special move and try to out-yomi me with DP. i’ll take being hit if i can also win when i’m right. but i don’t know how the defense ever wins here, and i don’t know why the offense wouldn’t incorporate it into their game 2 or more times per round. it’s just so, so good, but comes with none of the trappings of SF4’s FADC (DPs aren’t missable, you never have to leave block, they have monster hitboxes in this game that catch backdashes, neutral jumps, and a ton of top-of-the-head stuff, etc)

a lot of the rest of the game i can get behind. i have no problems with one-button specials lowering execution requirement, or undroppable combos, or any of the rest of it. i’m a bit weary about no hard knockdowns and the fact that most characters get exactly one button to press in most situations, and i don’t love the lack of anti-airs because it encourages jumping as a primary means of offense, but… ok, i’ll let those things ruminate and maybe i’ll change my mind on them later. but a worse version of SF4’s DP problem is really, really hard to swallow for me.

Gonna hack a ps4 fight pad and mod it into a ps4 stick.

I think i’m gonna use the hori RAP enclosure.
Since i took off the front sticker, which was kinda warping and coming off from the sweat from my palms.
Think i’m gonna spray the metal front with white and make the stick and buttons red like how i had it before.

Hopefully looks more slick with the end result.

The black and yellow Real Arcade Pro 3 is kinda outdated.
For sure doesn’t feel as comfortable as it did back in the day when there wasn’t any other options lol.

If you choose to do the same thing as well and need some spare parts, like blue buttons.
Don’t hesitate to ask.

edit:
My old previous work from last generation, hacking the wireless ps3 controllers.
Unfortunately, wireless created all sorts of problems. lol
time was around 2007 i think, for sure before the release of vanilla sf4.

holyyyy look at this electrical engineer

I admire the dedication.
Playing the SFV beta on pad makes me want to buy a PS4 stick so bad, but I’m holding on to hope that PS3 sticks will work in the retail version of the game.

or hopefully find a used one on kijiji

you lucky ass PS4 owners… im itchin so bad for the PC beta so i can try the game out.

thanks anh, I’m on that fall 2k15 budget :frowning:
I’m in, on it lol.

with oil prices so low, reminds you of the days of 2k8 doesn’t it?

2007-2008, kinda miss the days of being unemployed and getting high and bboying everyday.
eating 7-11 hot dogs and Doritos and dr pepper everyday and playing kof 2k2 unlimited match, waiting for sf4 to drop lol.
that freedom felt so liberating, yet I know it doesn’t last forever.

madcatz ps4 sticks retail pretty much @ $200 on amazon.
while hori ps4 sticks retail pretty much @ $170 on amazon.
hori fight pad, $50 on amazon. XD

***inspired by greg and troy

Regardless, still a long wait for sf5…

I learned i can’t do a super motion for the life of me without canceling it from a fireball first while playing on pad lol

Shit sucks man

You will want a ps4 stick anyway unless you want everyone at tournaments including tourney organizers to hate you ;).

PS3 sticks work the same terrible way with USF4 on PS4 as they do with MKX right? With the profile and cache business?

I’ll get one eventually, but i’m not buying it now for a game that’ll be out in 6 months lol

Half screen armor really isn’t a problem, straight up. I haven’t lost to a Dauntless in a long time. The slide can be baited again, just jump over it. I won a set vs DaFeetLee last night doing exactly that. If he made contact with the slide, oh well. He gets his mixup now. If he wants to DP, great. If he does anything else, I probably hit him.

They decided to make jumping strong in Rising Thunder. I don’t see the problem with that either, there’s been a lot of other, dumber things that have been mega strong in FGs before … like parry! KD is annoying as hell but as most the cast if you pick it, you have totally neutered your damage output so that’s a fair trade. Vlad still hits decently hard without KA but Edge, Crow, and Dauntless are all gimped if you pick it, and if you play Talos and pick KD you just straight up suck.

But Edge, Dauntless and Vlad do not have one of the DPs you are talking about … and only one of Chel’s works the way you are talking about. No hard knockdowns NP if I bait a DP and punish it properly vs a fast standing opponent I get to run two mixups before their DP comes off cooldown, they have to stay on the ground to let their cooldown timer run sometimes. Only one button to push … I don’t see a big difference between that and SF4… plus most of the cast will have a few more buttons they need to use anyway to actually play them. so on so forth. you gotta play more, really.

and as a bonus, the character who is best with KD getting baited and punished for trying to KD … and look how long it takes to build it up in the first place
