Still super balanced as far as NRS games go. Any character can win. Even Jason and Kotal now, apparently!
The recent European major had 8 characters in top 8 (with none of the dlc characters). Tremor is one of those characters no one knew what to do against because that community is dumb and said he was unviable when he was released and for weeks after.
Shinnok (I’m cursed) and Predator are probably too good but that won’t last. The second round of dlc characters is gonna be announced soon which means the whole game is gonna change anyway for better or worse. Other big problem is that what everyone was afraid of did happen, where most every character has a clearly best variation.
i think that variation thing was pretty clear… even if you have good intentions, something out of your control/foresight will make one variation the clear choice for most characters
predator is super top tier then?
I’d say so. He’s like AE Yun plus ridiculous zoning.
I think Predator is incredibly overrated but I guess we’ll see. It’s not helping that SonicFox has picked him up and he makes every character look infinitely better than they actually are.
Summer Jam is in a couple weeks so hopefully they’ll be some good Predator matches to watch.
I’m starting to burn out on MKX, the netcode is too frustrating and I think it’s making me worse at the game not better. I’ve started playing KI again. Aria is so damn cool.
Predator’s low laser is 100% getting nerfed so I dunno if we’ll ever really know one way or the other ;).
I’d rather play any other fighting game online than MK. So I’ve just been getting my fix with Rising Thunder. Diamond wuuu.
I don’t really care for that game either because it has a lot of the stuff I hate about sf4 (but to an extreme because it’s so simplified so those things are even more apparent), but at least it works…I’ll probably stop once I hit legendary.
i was really high on rising thunder before i went on vacation, then i got sent my beta code the very first day i left so i couldn’t play
i never did play it because when i got back, i learned about all the really annoying stuff in the game that is totally nonsensical (cancelling whiffed supers for half a kinetic gauge so everything is always safe?)
i want to play it because i like to engage in discussions about fighting game theory, but i just can’t get over some of the stuff they did, plus i’m playing rocket league and just can’t be bothered to boot it up
rising thunder sucks. for real. i want to talk to the devs at pax and see why they decided on the following:
-dps are safe and lead to undroppable half health combos
-dps have huge horizontal hitboxes so it’s hard to walk out of range or empty jump to bait
-bursts are unbaitable, and you can’t see your opponent’s meter so you don’t know when they have it stocked
-almost nobody has working AA normals so there’s no incentive not to jump when you know your opponent has DP on cooldown
-what AA normals you have are likely prox normals that will never come out when you want them to
-you don’t have to leave block to mash reversal
-you don’t have to know what side either character is on to reversal
-you don’t have to make a read on what your opponent is doing at all to reversal
-you don’t have to have 4 of the 5 human senses to be able to reversal every 1f gap 100% reliably, and safely to boot
-abare mash chained jab leads to fat combo strings that are also safe on block with many characters
-there are no hard knockdowns (?), so there are no safe jumps, and also no real setups to force characters to block
-rollback netcode makes it hard AF to confirm off jumpins with confidence (ok, they can’t fix shitty canadian ISPs)
i was really up on the game when it dropped, but every time i play it i can’t help but be pessimistic about their vision for it’s future. i don’t have fun with games that are designed around 1-size-fits-all panic buttons where the aggressor just has to back off for fear of eating shit for pressing a button.
Lets find a way to get offline games again this weekend, maybe Monday at Gurgs if he is hosting. I work sunday night now cause some dude had to go have his appendix out.

I just stopped playing the game altogether when I reached Diamond. 4/6 of the matches in the game revolved around me baiting reversals. I can’t commit to any offense with one button reversals that are cancelable to being advantage on block. I heard in the latest patch that DP Kinetic Advance forward dash is safe on block but slightly negative. So we’re just reaching SF4 level of stupidity instead of complete stupidity.
it doesn’t matter for chel though, her DP combos on hit without kinetic bar
so just pick kinetic deflect, do a combo on hit, and save yourself with immediate burst for 1/2 bar (same cost as kadc) on whiff/block/whatever

I can see why they want dps to lead into combos, because they want your cooldown to wear off on successful dp, but being able to jump in for free while dp cooldown seems a lot less fun than the devs anticipated.

Try your best to learn the gyroscope controls. It takes a little getting used to, but once you do it’s almost as precise as mouse aiming and gives you a definite advantage.
I’d recommend using a sniper rifle (Splat Charger) since that’s how I learned to use the gyroscope.
eh rising thunder isn’t so bad. the shoto character is too good right now but the rest of em are pretty fun. reversals are annoying but unsafe at least, so many guys now try to dash forward and just get bopped cuz they are at frame disadvantage. Chel’s DP needs another big hitbox reduction. I played Abel for so many years I’m kinda used to just baiting shit out constantly at this point
most annoying thing I’m finding so far is if you tick with c.L then just try and neutral jump over whatever they do is, so you can bait reversals and whatnot. fucking everything in this game hits you on the way up. SF and Marvel it feels like your whole lower body disappears when you jump, this game you are still basically grounded until halfway into your jump
i’m p much done with the sf4 style do-nothing-is-the-best-option games. getting mulligans for bad decisions is bad for everyone.
abel needs to bait stuff out but he also has a ton of anti-DP tech… he can make your reversal whiff, he can stuff it with a deep crossup, he can confuse your inputs with roll, he has good OSes with blocking that mean he doesn’t have to give up his entire pressure to block a reversal. he also has terrifying mixups for when you do decide not to DP, because in SF4 sometimes DPs can never be made safe
in rising thunder it seems like DPs are safe more often than not, and baiting them out is incredibly hard because of hitboxes and one-button inputs. it takes the sf4 game and kinda cranks it way up to unmanageable levels
unbaitable burst 3+ times a round seems really brutal to me as a design choice
SFV beta seems to be working for some people right now but might just be a stress test.

Yeah, I got in first try and there’s no Cammy and Birdie atm. Haven’t found a match also. There was a message when you logged in saying that their doing stress testing.
