Because I can’t really until I understand the game better. I feel like this version is more “fighting gamey” because things seem more obviously punishable, there’s more reasons to stay grounded, the technical barrier is lower so it’s more about the mind games which is the side of fighting games I enjoy most (And probably why I prefer games like Soul Calibur, etc).

At no point did I say this game was better than older ones. But it’s different, which I think is good. I can’t be negative about everything all the time. New being better has never been a concern of mine. It’s more about if new is fun in general and a new and different experience… I just “know” when something new feels bad, so I won’t play it. I don’t put much thought into it, to be honest. I play games by feel. But Brawl felt bad, MK4 felt bad, Soul Calibur 3 felt bad, etc. But new Smash feels good. Give me a week and I’ll have better thought out pros and cons? I could explain using a crass metaphor, but it’s probably best not to.

I think tiers will end up more condensed as a by-product of the core mechanic changes, like the removal of edge-hogging. And characters who were traditionally bad feel a lot more viable now, but it’s early so who knows. Not that it matters. I have no intention of getting competitive at this game. It’s just for fun, and in that department it delivers (the game has recieved universal acclaim - there are people who are paid to articulate why it’s fun, and they’ll do a better job than I will)… If Xrd or MKX turned out to be crappy competitive games, then I might actually care.

there you go.

i think that’s all legit. i also agree that a game doesn’t necessarily have to be totally better in every way to be worth playing, of course. being new has lots of merit (new stuff to learn, looks way better, new quality of life improvements, online stuff). there is definitely a certain bar it has to reach to have some staying power and convert the old guard however.

personally i have 0 plans to play this game competitively and the little i’ve played with friends has been mostly pretty fun. being slower makes it much easier to tell what’s happening compared to jumping into the melee shark tank with people who actually practiced that game. certain moves arbitrarily being really laggy on landing kind of sucks because it feels like nintendo just chose a bunch of moves that i’m not supposed to ever use, which limits options, which sucks.

i think people like ricky are just bummed because it isn’t unreasonable to expect that the game could have been both fun AND competitive. you said that you played like 1000 hours of melee, which satisfied both of those criteria QED.

i REALLY want xrd to be a good game with some real teeth to it, because there’s literally nothing else on the horizon that i’m even remotely interested in.

i could have a long debate about edge-hogging by itself, but probably best saved for in person where i don’t have to type a bunch and you can walk out of the room when you’re sick of hearing me talk

also, i’m sure smash 4 will be “competitive”, as in, there will be competitions held and certain players will win more often because they are skilled. but to me it’s looking like a boring form of competition. the pace is slow, so there’s less human reaction involved (most of the good fighting games will push your reaction limits), and even if you fully predict your opponent’s action, often times your character can’t move into a favorable place in time to do something about it.

i’m sure drunk 8 player smash with items will be a hoot at parties and stuff though, which i guess is all that matters, i dunno anymore man

just kinda sick of the games industry right now, all the terrible, buggy launches of high-profile games in november has put a stamp on a dumb year in games, it sucks to see your hobby slowly deteriorate because casuals hate skill so developers remove a lot of it so people can’t complain (unless you play a life game like dota), and then good single player games are forced out before they’re ready because developers want profits

i’m playing sunset overdrive though, it’s kinda fun

Now you know my pain about Street Fighter!!!

layton v wright is great

Anyone interested in doing another betting pool for Capcom Cup? 20 dollar entry, winner take all?
Since we will know all 16 participants, maybe do a point system. Person with most points at the end wins. If tie for points, money will be split accordingly.

1st - 16 points
2nd - 15 points
3rd - 14 points
4th - 13 points
5-6th - 11 points
7-8th - 9 points
9-12th - 5 points
13-16th - 1 point

how much is the game cube adapter retail? i am tempted to just get one online but i don’t want to pay 2x the cost if i can help it

They’re supposed to be $22. People are selling them for $170+ online.

ugh

I guess im gonna have to rock the pro controller for a few months

also I played a bunch of 1v1s last night and the lag is no better. I played maybe 15 different people and they were all horrible except for 1 dude who was smashing my shit with Mario. kept comboing me with grab + utilt(I think?) and then side smash, and when I would recover he’d spike me to my death over and over. other than that guy I won basically all my games by just totally avoiding people(pretty easy with sonic) and going for potshots

movement is really really hard, definitely the hardest adjustment so far is movement on the ground. I find it super hard to grab people and shit, I always miss them or I roll by accident. the dexterity people have is incredible, definitely have a new found respect for people that make smash look as fast as they do, I can barely get around and shield 1/10 times

wtf? i tried to post some youtube videos but SRK says it will be posted after my post has been approved.
EDIT: i hacked the system. just create a post first then edit it after with the youtube videos.

CALGARY’S SEASON THUS FAR…

EDMONTON’S SEASON THUS FAR…

where? i wanna sell mine for that much!
pro controller feels fine, silly people paying that much lol

There were 3 on Amazon for that much, and they all sold! Ridiculous.

I’m just playing on the tablet for now. Better practice for when I need to poop.

man anyone who is willing to drop 170 on one of those things deserves to be ripped off.

Play this song while watching this

Has anyome tried the Hori pad sold at eb that looks exactly like the game cube pad but plugs into the wii mote?

Also mapping tilts to the right analog stick on the Pro controller has made this game way easier for me to play, glad u can that,

cool that daigo recreated the chun parry in the 37 reloaded exhibition match

that’s not an easy combo after the jump parry

The Oilers fired their goalie coach after the 7-1 beatdown. Lol. Poopmonton.

giving up Khabibulin was one of the worst decisions poopmonton has made in a long time.

I don’t think it’s the goalie’s fault though, their defense is atrocious. time to pack it up and let Calgary be the capital city already.

hard to be a confident goalie in edmonton when your team doesn’t put up huge goal numbers and your defense gives up 124 quality shots per game

if you let one in you basically know the game is lost, and then it’s a spiral down for future games
