In all poker tournaments, the payout structure for 1st, 2nd etc is always known in advance, and usually it’s very top heavy, so the difference between 1st and 2nd is huge, 2nd and 3rd is huge, and it quickly diminishes so players get barely anything. In most big online tournaments, when it gets down to a few people, they tend to strike a deal to split the winnings a bit more evenly, because they’re scared that getting unlucky could cost them a ton of money. I imagine Sam and the other 4 players left at his table decided to split the winnings by ratio of their chip counts at some point, rather than 1st making triple that of 2nd. It’s basically a way for them to soften the blow of randomness and prevent one unlucky draw of the cards costing one person $20,000 (deals are usually only made when life-changing money is at stake, because it would be THE WORST time to get unlucky…). Everyone has to agree to the deal for it to be valid, and not every casino lets you make deals… some want you to play it out.
Basically, the person who was in the chip lead is willing to pay a bit of money off the theoretical 1st place prize money he would maybe win to ensure that he still makes more than everybody else, and the people in 2nd and below are willing to accept that they’re not getting 1st place, but they still want an adequate share of the winnings.
