pretty much any site that allows user uploaded content would be gone, so forums in general would get shut down. too risky to expose yourself to the kind of attacks that would be legally allowed under SOPA. I don’t know as much about PIPA so I can’t comment on it too much but it is probably as bad as SOPA is.

the real kicker is that both pieces of legislation would be totally ineffective at stopping what they are purportedly intended to stop (piracy). so these pieces of paper would pretty much destroy the internet, and there would be no positive benefit. Well… people outside the US could continue pretty much as normal, although they would lose a huge part of their American audience. Silver lining in that dark cloud = remove a huge portion of the english-speaking trolls from the internet.

I had an epiphany watching British coverage of the whole thing and reading US politican talking points like “I am a commited free marketer” and I realized that the US still has this residual of fear of communism that colors everything they do. They really aren’t that far past McCarthyism and the Red Scare and are just as mired in their insane paranoia of socialism as they have always been… what a fucked up country

A lot of sites were protesting against SOPA, and blacking out their websites to raise awareness and induce action from people. A lot of people in the FGC were disappointed that SRK did not take part in this protest as well. Nilcam from Dreamcancel.com twittered the following:

well to be fair, after hearing the arguments from the nebraskans i dont blame them. the pipleline would basically run through an aquifier that supplies all of the irrigation for that entire state. while it’s unlikely that a pipeline would burst, forcing this pipeline through a place where the general populace by and large doesnt want it is not a good pr move. making them re-route it is the correct response. when it comes to the environment we need to take the time to do it right; instead of just forcing legislation through that benefits only one party, who would only lose money from a mishap. if something were to go wrong, it would be nebraskans who would be really truely fucked, and if they aren’t buying into it, you can’t ethically just shut them up and do it anyways, if they dont take your peace offering(money) then you need to find a different way to make them OK with the pipeline going through their state

also, the republicans pushed it through with a stipulation Obama would need to decide one way or another if the pipeline was happening in less than 60 days. they did that in early December iirc, and Obama said straight out before they did it “if you try to limit the time for my decision, it’s not happening.” so once again its the republicans using political bullshit to set up a situation in which Obama couldn’t help but look bad… although he initially didn’t want to make a decision until 2013, after the election, so he’s not entirely innocent here either
