serious question,
with a record divorce rate in today’s world, do you think that monogamy should be a thing of the past. is it time to evolve as human beings and realize there are too many people in this world to stay with just one person for the rest of our lives?
monogamy:
[]The practice or state of being married to one person at a time.
[]The practice or state of having a sexual relationship with only one partner.
monogamy is a longstanding and very deep-set cultural tradition that isn’t going anywhere. there are also a lot of good reasons for it, mostly due to providing a stable household for children to develop in. i’ve actually known couples that were polyamorous and seemed to work out okay for some of them, but i don’t think i personally have the mindset to handle that.
No offense, but please do not call that as “evolve”.
You can consider my answer as a no. It’s one of three things in the world that disgusts me just by thinking about it.
Fack 4got to say Happy Bday yesterday Simon hope you had a excellent day n you made some sweet wishes!!
Would you really want to sleep with multiple partners who are also sleeping with multiple partners… who are also sleeping with multiple partners etc? The chances of them being protected are not as high as one would think.
STI’s and HIV everywhere, unknown bastard children everywhere, inability to truly mutually connect with somebody.
Quality > Quantity.
I also simply would never want to share somebody with another person, that alone angers and grosses me out, I find it pretty disgusting
edit/add: If you’re going off divorce rates, perhaps it should be more of a question regarding should marriage be so widely available to people in oppose to should you be able to drill more than one oil field at a time haha
Some good responses, so I don’t have too much to add, but if marriages are being ruined by people cheating on each other, why does it seem like a good idea to do more of it? Just because it’s out in the open doesn’t mean it has any fewer psychological effects on the person, and “well, you can do it too” isn’t a terribly good reason.
Long-term relationships (marriage, eg) ought to be monogamous for many reasons, even discounting the religious/spiritual reasons. As Mike M said, secular studies do a good job showing how important mental stability is to a healthy relationship, and how it relates to children growing up, and how it effects society on the whole and all this stuff.
Also, I don’t really understand the reason for polygamy. If two people decide to do that, what are they gaining? More sexual pleasure from more partners, I guess… I can’t think of any other “benefit”? If you’re talking just straight up “evolutionary benefits” or “survival of the fittest” mentality for the human race, seems like monogamy offers more for that.
I have books and books on the benefits of polyamory. Not that I agree with it (or disagree), but I will share some of its benefits later haha. Polygamy isn’t a good thing, however, as in most cases it’s just used as a means of maintaining patriarchy: but the same could be said for marriage in general (Which I definitely think is a dated concept).
This right here for me.
Polygamy is weird. Near my hometown in bc there is a community known as Bountiful. It is a fundamentalist Mormon “town” that is based on it.
Overall I found that it is seriously one sided, the males are predominant over the women. I know people who have exiled themselves from their family(ies) because they saw first hand how wrong it is.
Being a swinger or having multiple sexual partners is a personal choice. As long as the two persons involved in a relationship are consensual of the lifestyle, I do not see a problem with it.
That being said - there are many problems and issues that can arise from being involved in such activities. For instance, imagine if an example couple were the mother and father of a child. How would this affect them? It could either be positive or severely negative.
In the aspect of modern relationships being subjected to divorce and at risk of having a severe life changing event happen - I personally believe that the only culprit at fault is the modern mass media.
That, and everything else that is wrong with the world.
Tldr: Be yourself. As long as you don’t affect anyone in a negative manner or hinder someone else’s progress in having a good life you are doing well.
yeah … pretty much. remain considerate. clearly, sometimes harder said than done.
the opposite of monogamy isn’t polygamy, but since it’s been brought up— i’ve read plenty of times that polygamy simply doesn’t work in large communities because the math doesn’t square. 1 man (and it’s always a single man, because of the way pregnancies work) with ten wives means that 9 other men aren’t getting any. what inevitably happens is that most young men will either end up frustrated, alone, and angry, or ‘mysteriously’ banished from the community.
