Calgary Thread 2011

Mvc3 won’t be taking over, no need to be worried. After the first few weeks of craziness, depending on the demand it might only need 1 or 2 setups for ranbats anyways. I don’t see ssf4 coming off the main projector except for maybe grand finals of mvc3 tbh

I could be totally wrong but I think most peoples estimates on marvels popularity are a little exaggerated atm. I can’t be the only one who doesn’t want sf4 to totally drop off after marvel is released

that’s pretty cool. obviously combofiend is a beast, i think i remember zeniside telling me that he alt’d makoto a couple months back.

didn’t look like he knew that you can ex hayate -> fukiage dhalsim in the corner tho. and filipino champ should have tried to slide under / focus / b.rh / b.mp the obvious axe kicks, or throw out something like b.fwd after blocking one to keep her grounded 'cause unlike cammy’s dive she has no frame advantage on block.

it’s possible to beat most of sim’s AA normals with the RH or EX versions of the axe kick but ONLY at the range it would normally whiff at, which results in you getting punched in the head if he decides to do nothing. her air to ground game is very strange for sure, but it’s almost impossible to crossup dhalsim with her just because of the way the hitboxes on her j.mk work so you should be able to tell the difference between an axe kick and a straight jump-in pretty easily.

So apparently I make an appearance of like 5 seconds in Focus. I think I should get a background extra credit.

Yeah, JS didn’t know the matchup but Combofiend played it really, really well. I’m not sure anyone more familiar with the matchup would have won anyway. He beat jab pressure and Rog’s antiairs like they weren’t even there. Pretty sick.

Also, Adon is “easier” to beat when you can react to jaguar kicks with ultras or DPs. I think he can be a bit of a frustrating character to play AS because everything he uses has gaps in it. Online though, that’s not a problem lol.

More golden commentary:

“I think this match is 5 - 5”

My ass that match is 5 - 5; more like 7 - 3.

I dunno, 6-4 sounds about right to me. I’ve played what people called the hardest 7-3 in SF4 (Abel/Gief) and I don’t think Guy-Rog is anywhere near that hard. It’s not 5-5, though.

I’m not the only one who thinks so:

Super Street Fighter 4 Tiers ? Character Rankings : EventHubs.com

Abel vs Gief is even on that list too.

i can tell just from playing mike’s guy with my really rusty rog that it’s definitely not even, lol. doesn’t seem as impossible as some of the hardcore 7-3s that i’ve played though, like vanilla honda / rose v. sagat, or makoto v. guile where one mistake (you didn’t capitalize on knockdown, you jumped 1 frame too late and got hit by trade ultra, etc.) was basically the round.

hey troy, any chance you’ve got a hi-res shot of this yet ?

EDIT actually don’t worry! i printed it on 8.5x11 and it looks just fine

i thought i recognized the drawing style … nice work dug.

Quick way to invalidate a tier list.

(Granted, Abel/Gief is slightly better for Abel in SSF4 but it’s still in Gief’s favor pretty substantially)

Well I’d have to agree with you about tier lists in general. Still, I put a bit more stock in this one compared to Philipino Champ’s laughable list.

At least this was compiled by a number of Japan’s best, I think they try not to be too biased. Seems like a huge change for Gief vs. Abel though. They wouldn’t just switch up the numbers so drastically without something to sustantiate it. What made the match so difficult in Vanilla?

everything you can do i can do better

i can make everything hurt twice as much as you

(no you can’t)
YES I CAN
(no you can’t)
YES I CANNNNNNNNNNN

Yo guys, I made a google spreadsheet for a sign up to come over for the marvel 3 release.
I just want to know how many folks will be coming and with what, so I can arrange things at my place to accommodate setups.
sign up on it here, if you’d like to come!
thanks

Not really much has changed from Vanilla to Super. Some people think Breathless helps, since Gief can be put in a bad position where he has to straight up guess when to jump (he can’t jump out of range or beat it), but I think most Abel players still pick U1 in this match.

Gief’s lariat got nerfed, and Abel has a really big crouching hitbox, so that helps a bit (if Abel baits lariat and is crouching next to Gief, he can now do something about it without getting hit). Gief also has less health, so Abel can win landing slightly fewer pokes. Otherwise, Gief still outpokes Abel, Abel runs huge risks running any type of mixup on Gief, and one knockdown puts Abel into the Gief option-select meat grinder where he often never gets up. Basically, Abel can’t play his standard game, whereas Gief gets to play his most effective game (strong pokes, throw mixups, option selects beating everything) AND never has to deal with runaway.

I think Gief’s jumping hitboxes changed on most of his stuff too, making him easier to anti-air. could have just been on his empty jump hitbox though. The nerfs to s.mp and c.lk helped, and the nerf to lariat’s hitbox on startup definitely is a huge benefit, but IMO people learning more about Abel has helped more than anything

Let that sink in… This will be a powerful technique… You get to alpha-counter into whatever the hell you want. But you can only use once a match!

Looks like the bradygames guide will have frame data too. niiiiiice

1 free red parry every match?

Into Blue Nocturne.

It looked a lot cleaner before I went and raped it in photoshop and illustrator lol.
