though i never took any of the high level class in college, but i agree with every you said, everything has to started from the fundemental.
calc 1,2,3 werent that bad imo… a lot more memorization i think than other math classes. one of the math professors here told me that besides integration, differentiation, and the taylor series, none of it was really used in later math (at least the courses i was looking at).
linear algebra took some more thinking and less memorization; i enjoyed that class a lot. there were a lot of definitions though: bases, eigenvalues, null space etc etc.
i’m taking number theory now, and i find it to be pretty easy because i’ve always been really fast at factoring and primality tests in my head
btw i’m a freshman in college, so i haven’t taken any math higher than those. i prefer problem solving to formula plugging:rolleyes:
If any of you are math majors, just wait until you take Topology and Real Analysis.
physics ftw
the only subject that intimidates me even a little bit is computer science. I aint touchin’ that sh1t with a ten foot pole. tho I’ll admit upper div math (topology and sh1t) is annoying to no end. I’m just glad I don’t have to take it haha I heard engineering classes are a b1tch too, but I haven’t taken any yet, so I can’t say much.
i’ve forgotten almost all of my calc now sigh
I’ve never been a math person, so I never bothered to deal with anything past algebra (or even pre-algebra in college cuz I forgot everything). Unless yo’re planning to go into some major that requires a lot of math knowledge, you really only need basic math to survive.
I always thought it would be good to keep up on Trig in case I was ever lost or had to find my out of a forest or something.
Yes, business major. Love the math, and funniest thing is I don’t I will ever use 1% of what I learned. Always liked trig though, but for the rest of you ty, somebody has to know all that s. Go invent something!
just practice differentiation and same with integration when you get there. honestly, its just keeping track and grinding them out and using the right equations. series and sequences will make or break you in calc, imo. after that its not as bad , i think.
ok i have some real advice for the OP. get schaum’s outline of calculus. their math books are pretty good and they have a lot of examples and practice problems. schaum’s outlines are also pretty cheap, I used their outlines to supplement my math classes and they worked pretty well.
try this and see if it will help
It’s cool. “dy/dx” still doesn’t make any sense. A small change in y caused by a small change in x. wtf? Why can’t I just plug in the difference in change? Who knows.
Vector calculus sucks. 3D math, oh noes! This one is biting me in the ass. I failed this course miserably and now have to use the same concepts in electromagnetic fields.
Linear algebra was straight forward. You don’t argue with it, take it for what it is.
I just realized if you do an integral of a constant line over some range of x, you eventually get y*x, which is essentially the area of a box! Mind blowing!
I also hate the fact that some instructors skip over calculations and move straight to some expression.
Glad I never took calculus. I had a hard enough time with trigonometry.
I dont like math in general. Thats why Im aiming to be an ESL teacher lol. Not much math required there /_/\ (or none at all lol)
I am assuming yall are doing Engineering. I took all of those classes when I got my degree in EE. Calc 1 is easy and Calc 3 is the same, but it talks about the z-plane. Now Calc 2 is freaking hard. If you can make it through that then you should be fine. I barely made a “C” in Calc 2.
7k
Thanks for the words of advice guys.
Yeah i am an engineering major (environmental.
There is a strange trend that is very consistent in Calculus. The teacher explains the section of the chapter, i get about 50% of what he is saying, then i go home and study by myself and/or with tutors and after ‘x’ number of hours i analyze the rest of the 50%.
Man i got my test back today from Thursday, i was certain i got like a D but i got a 83%. One of the happiest days of my life.
This class is definitely tough for me but thankfully i have a lot of help available.
The thing i really like about Calculus however, is that I get to nod and say “that’s cool” to people who say they are majoring in something like Sociology, knowing that I will be so much more better off in the future just because i wasn’t too much of a pansy to step it up and strive for the best. Kind of arrogant but eh, whatever. Calculus makes a man evil.

i dont understand a word of it but I thought i might help you somewhere in your future calculus classes (assuming you are to continue).
Its funny how I see people bragging on this thread on how “advance their shit is” or “Man my classes are way tougher” BS.
People I’m calling out:
JubeiNinja69, Javid
I’m a second semester Chemical Engineering M.S. Student and transfer functions are cake. Calc and physics was way harder when it was first introduced to me then what you’re talking about.
and LOL at “modelling systems using Laplace Transforms and Fourier Series will blow your mind away”
I bet you don’t even understand why you use Laplace
uh oh! richter just laid down the gauntlet!
laplace and fourier was optional unless you were an engineering major at rutgers so i have no clue lol
necro-bump
Do they have anything like that for Real Analysis? I’m more of the mindlessly plugging equations type, so I’m getting some fierce dickings from this class.
