it’s called instant bk, :qcb::uf::k: leave the :uf: motion for half a second and then kick.

Square or octagon gate for viper?

triangle

your a big boy its all what you want to use.

Just depends on what you are comfortable with.

Octagon is for people who aren’t used to square gates (people that use American sticks basically).

Square gates are for people that realize the whole point of the square gate is to keep your hand in the area needed to do your motions on the stick. It keeps you from touching the corners of the stick since Sanwas are very precise and don’t need much hand movement.

Get a square.

Thanks for nice answer.

When I first got my stick, I played on an octogate, as I mained ken as my first character. I picked up Viper after a while, because I always wanted to main her from the beginning, though I knew I should have started with an easier character, hence Ken. I did alright with the octo, but there were so many times where I ended up with Super’s after my FFF’s, and my SJC burning kicks were way too inconsistent. I switched to a square gate about a month ago and gave her another shot. My Viper game has increase ten fold, times a damn million haha. To be honest, I’m still having trouble doing some of the simple quartercircle motions n whatnot, but it’s definitely helped my Viper out a lot.

Square is by far better for viper. After a while you will realize that bottom part of the square is your best friend

Okay, nice, that makes it a obvious choice then.

I tried playing Sakura because I just can’t play Viper on a 360 controller… and I ended up going back to Viper. Trying to play anyone else just feels so… wrong.

Any tips for someone who plays on a controller? I’m going to try and get a stick soon…

i havent played her on controller but some ppl can, i would just try and get a stick and learn her on that because if you learn her on pad then get a stick your back to square one.its a great investment if you want to get more into fighting games and helps with the execution ALOT.

Before I got my PS3, I used to play Viper on the 360 controller when I was playing SF4 on my bro’s 360. It was very awkward, even more so than using her on a Dual Shock. The only advanced Viper techniques I could really do on that pad were Seismo Chains and FFF, sjcing normals into Ultra and sjc fadcing was out of the question for me, lol.

I’ve got some tips on another thread on how to use Viper with a controller which is here: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=6947330&postcount=22 but I don’t think it’s going to help you much to be honest. It’s something I’d have to show you visually. I’m trying to arrange one of my friends to record my hands when doing certain techniques.

This online playing is for the damn birds.

Either the idiots just jump non-stop, and you just AA them constantly, or they mash on reversal, and you can’t really practice any real mixups.

Even after you hp.TK them out of the sky, or stuff their 4th attempted reversal DP, these retards STILL do it.

Can’t learn how to play her at all, when the competition is just flat dumb.

My only real tip is to try to learn to use the analog stick since the 360 dpad is horrible. Even the dual shock has a better dpad than the 360 dpad. Outside of that…get a stick. I wouldn’t recommend getting the MadCatz SFIV pads since I hear they’re not worth the money you pay just to use them for fighting games. Break easily and aren’t even as responsive or durable as a Sega Saturn pad (to this day the best dpad ever).

Apparently if you look in the tech talk forums there’s a way you can mod your 360 dpad to make it better for fighting games. I don’t know if it’s a fool proof method and not prone to other issues but it’s worth a shot if you don’t see buying a good stick as an option.

i’ve been trying to practice this method a lot since the bk comes out a lot faster, but i keep getting a straight up and down SJ…any tips?

I have a question. Why is Viper such a popular character to main nowadays even though besides a few good people who play her she never gets top spots in known tourneys?

i think maybe cus shes so different then most of the characters in the game, she is very fun to play and watch, just from playing viper exclusively my execution has gone way up compared to if i were to play say a boxer whos links are pretty easy.well combofiend and valle won sbo and he used viper, its most likely very hard for viper at top play thats why she might not be winning anything.

yeah I know what you mean. What I like with viper is you have to really work for the win since about every top tier char. is a bad matchup

Idk though Ive been using Viper exclusively in tourneys/offline play lately and I got most of her advanced stuff (FFF combos, SJC ultras) down. my execution with other chars. is still pretty “meh” though. Im not too good with links unless I practice them for like 10mins in training mode. FADC combos are pretty easy to me but Viper doesn’t really FADC a lot so that’s kinda weird lol. What I like the most about Viper is her mixup options, her speed, and the fact that she has potential to be unstoppable if played in the right hands.

Its just weird how I see a lot of Viper players on the forums but not enough in tourney results (combofiend, Kensou, Flashmetroid and a few others being an exception lol)

actually I think im the only viper player in the midwest lol. Or at least in the upper midwest

i totally know what you mean about the FADC combos being easy i was like wtf when i could easily do ryus fadc ultra like nothing lol, yea its weird not seeing viper place but it will happen sooner or later once ppl understand her more, one thing i have noticed though, is viper isnt always about her gimmicks its just ppl like to do them and be flashy, you can still put up a great fight with just a basic viper like combofiend did at sbo, im just starting out in my local scene but when i hit the arcade i noticed that alot of the viper players where not as good as me, and im still a nub they were losing to ppl that i was winning against. but that was only my first day at the arcade and i prob didnt play anyone good cuz the only person i lost to was marn and his viper.

i think the bottom line with viper is that she’s really fun to use. granted the learning curve may be too steep for some players, but once you start getting her techniques down then your game just opens up a lot. i only know of 1 other person besides me that mains viper here in hawaii and he’s much better than i am…

other than that, hearing the ooh’s and ah’s when i do FFF etc. to ultra feels good lol…
