The cons of a Hackintosh setup?
I have always wanted to mess with that. Saw a few articles online, seemed easy enough. Only thing I read as a con is you do run into the occasional kernel panic, and updates can be tricky.
Edit: and they only support old ass video cards.
I will bet you anything that if you come to Hollywood and go to ANY FILM or PHOTOGRAPHY production company or editing suite, it will more than likely be a Mac you see the film editor working on. I honestly don’t know what you’re arguing. I’m talking about EDITING IN HOLLYWOOD. Please read that carefully.
I’m not against PC’s because I use both systems unlike some people in here just arguing for the sake or arguing. I actually used PC’s longer.
This topic wasn’t created to argue over Mac vs. PC. I should’ve known better and just did some research.
I would do what spideyman said get a mac and have dual boot with win 7. The other side is building a pc from scratch would be cheaper… the only thing you have to worry about is viruses and what processor/graphics card you want. If you,ve got enough money maybe you could get an ssd for your main stuff and misc hd for anything else i.e. storage, film clips etc. Hd nowadays are cheap as hell. Just be sure to get a decent mobo. BTW have you got a 3.0 usb external hd? veeery handy, fast as hell (data transfer).
I own a couple of hackintosh laptops and PC’s running snow leaopard 10.6
They run just like a normal mac and can handle any OSX software. The only cons is I have to wait for drivers to be developed before each new major system update. Most of the time they work for 2-3 updates, then apple says “haha, we just made this piece of hardware which is popular in hackintoshes, no longer supported natively in OSX!”
Other wise, it’s a mac, with PC guts and case.
Might as well install Linux. It’s the same amount of effort needed. However, if one goes to the hackintosh forums, they list known laptops/desktops that work with OS X out of the box, and those would be some very nice setups.
For me, buying an Apple with OS X was like using linux, but without any regular headaches associated with maintaining a linux operating system.
But I’m a software engineer so that hardly has any bearing on someone editing film…
Also I never found the 15" Dell XPS with the 1080p monitor options mentioned, but I could just choose an Alienware instead so it doesn’t matter, and besides the alienwares have the quad core i7 mobile processors.
Yeah, I’ve wanted to make a Hackintosh system myself as I do have a few spare parts lying around (AM2 and 775 mobos, random g.cards and processors)
Thanks for the info. I’d rather go this route than spend thousands for something thats simply more aethestically pleasing.
Good to know, thanks.
Also, since W. Gotti got a Mac in the end I guess this thread can be closed before a PC vs Mac flameware ensues? Alternatively can this be moved to the tech thread?
This was the webpage I couldn’t remember earlier:
Custom Gaming Laptops by PowerNotebooks.com? - Gaming Notebooks & Custom Built Laptops
I’d go here for a new laptop, if I wouldn’t buy a Mac.
