Button transition from MvC2 to UMvC3

Hi! Just picked up the Mahvels on xbla cos they’re so cheap right now (Around £7 for 2 and U3 together!).
Used to play MvC2 a fair bit on Dreamcast and playing it:
LP,HP,A1
LK,HK,A2

on a 6-button stick quite comfortably. Struggling to find an intuitive setup for UMvC3 that matches it though?

Trying:
L,M,A1
H,S,A2

but it just doesn’t feel as natural. Any similar/better 6-button layouts out there that are worth trying for UMvC3? thx

Marvel 3’s button layout is about as functionally different as its gameplay is from Marvel 2. The default set up of:
L-M-H
S-A1-A2

is by far the most sensible layout for how the game plays. “S” really doesn’t function like old heavy buttons and its purpose is unique enough where it is better off being segregated to a separate row.

yup. Don’t try to play UMVC3 like mvc2 at all. They have similar functions like tri jumping and flying but the execution and timing makes playing umvc3 with a mvc2 button setup very weird.

I have a mvc2 background, when I dabbled in vanilla mvc3 (cough was doing Mag H loops and Soul Fist shenanigans week one) setup was:

M H A1
L S A2

Game is ass though…

Thanks! Just accepted it for what it is and using default. Never realized how different the 2 games were! Seems strange to even make it part of the series…

well look how different Marval 2 was from marval 1

Marvel 1 and marvel 2 were very different but had the same feel as the vs series before it. Marvel 3 is basically a sequel to Tatsunoku vs Capcom rather than a sequel to MVC2. Probably why a lot of the mvc2 players didn’t stick with marvel 3. I still don’t understand why they went that route.

You’re welcome manbehindthewires. While i can see the benefit of eczangief’s layout for a player transitioning, the way “S” functions is really a game changer. You can really tell the default layout was designed around how the game functions even just by looking how characters have specials tied to L + S, like Wolverine and Nova off the top of my head. Those inputs just get needlessly awkward with anything other than the default set-up. Plus there a lot of times that putting in an assist call in at the same time as you hit an attack button is really beneficial and again it gets needlessly complicated; flight combos seem like they’d get awkward as well.
