This is probably a dumb question, given Socom’s reputation, but how essential is a mic for this game?
Was thinking of just copping the PSN version…I love the jump in/jump out convenience of DLC. I’m don’t take any of the other games I play very seriously either (to the point where I need to communicate w/ others), so I don’t really want a mic.
I know this won’t be a COD4 run 'n gun deal, but without team communcation am I just going to just die within seconds of spawning?
GGs tonight guys, dinner took a little longer than i thought.
Also, I was having issues with my bluetooth headset. I’ll try resyncing it and if it’s still fucking up, I’ll buy the official one next time I go outside.
mic is pretty damn important. there are times when i had to put my mic down and recharge it while playing and couldn’t communicate with my team. there were enemy positions that i couldn’t inform my teamates about. could you play without a mic? sure. but remember that the bundle is $60 for the game and official sony headset. the game alone is $40 bucks so think of the headset as $20 even though if sold seperately i think the headset is going to be $40~$50 (i can’t remember). the value is too good to pass up. i was going to get the logitech vantage one which retails for about $60~$70 bucks but waited several months for socom to come out. there are other cheap bluetooth headsets out there but not as good as the sony official one. and like chachi mentioned, some have problems.
as for run’n gun style of play, you can actually play socom like that. but if the other team is playing tactically don’t expect to get too many kills. suppression game mode with infinite respawn is pretty much run 'n gun. elimination mode with no respawn, run 'n gun not recommended but still possible.
It depends. If you’re just into casual “player” matches, then you can definitely play solo and Rambo your way through the matches. But that’s assuming that the games are on infinite respawns. In matches where there are no respawns (or limited), then people tend to play much more conservative and camp/guard key areas on the map. In this scenario, you won’t get very far without team communication. I believe the “ranked” matches are set to no respawns (?). And the only way to increase your stats in the game is to participate in ranked matches. Team comm would also be very important in clan matches.
GGs Chachi, System, & Noa (knife f1ght).
Now that we figured out how to use the claymore, I think I’m gonna start using those along with grenades. They seem pretty useful. I’ve noticed that the explosion is unidirectional though. So if you’re standing directly behind the claymore when it goes off, then you wouldn’t receive any damage. I wonder if there’s a way to detonate with your gun equipped like doing so with c4 in cod4. Only method I know of is to just shoot it.
I’m liking the M16 w/ Acog scope. So far, it’s a comfortable fit for my style of play. I think I’ll play around with shotties next.
so i originally thought you couldn’t charge the sony bluetooth headset and use it at the same time but apparently you can. just put the bluetooth headset in the base and turn it on to make it a mic. can other bluetooth headsets do this? kind of a neat feature.
EDIT: omg… Sennheiser HD555 headphones + bluetooth mic is the shit… sounds are so good
haha yea wtf. that is a helicopter. dunno how they got that screen shot.
i’ve managed to rank up a couple times lately… even though ranks are useless i think heh. i got an exam on wedn so not much play time until after. looking forward to playing with the rest of ya’ll.
I’m glad that the patch is up now because I am really starting to get into SOCOM now that it’s actually playable for me. I was on the verge of selling it.
fun games last night R|C. you got that leaning out locked down. i gotta add the leaning to my arsenal. it’s just so much smarter than strafing out and exposing your whole body. but i’m not used to aiming with just the analog stick yet. what settings are you using on your motion sensor? i’mma start tweaking it a bit to get it more sensitive, but the problem i noticed though is getting it back to normal position doesn’t work sometimes. as in i lay the controller horizontal but my soldier is still leaning for some reason…
playing with dumb people sucks… some of these guys playing annoy the shit out of me haha. basically the type of people who are the last ones left and decide to camp a spot for the rest of the round. i know it’s a ranked game and i know that last person is outnumbered, but when you’re watching the last guy in the same spot for 5 minutes it’s retarded. camping is fine but when it’s the last guy on your team… damn i need to stop dying so fast haha.
as for the patch update, there’s not much crashing/disconnecting. there was one instance last night where R|C and i got disconnected from a game but were able to rejoin immediately without problems. i don’t know if its just me, but the lag is horrendous now. both performance stuttering type and connection type. i try to follow R|C sometimes and all he’s doing is walking in circles, then he instantly teleports to a spot that is several meters away.
I’ve been using the M16 pretty much exclusively lately, still trying to learn that gun before I move on to another. And since it doesn’t have full auto fire, it pretty much gets owned by other people who can just spray. So the M16 really needs that lean to get an advantage from a distance. If someone is running up to me really fast though, leaning isn’t a good option 'cause it takes some start up time - in that case I’d just pop out and shoot 'em.
Yeah, I don’t mind people who camp when they’re the last one left and especially if they’re out numbered. But what I can’t stand is when they camp at a dumb spot. I think camping is like tick throws in fighting games. It’s “cheap” but it’s part of the game and a necessary strategy to win. But there’s such a thing as noob camping. Like some guys would just camp above the stairs and wait for someone to run up the throughout the whole round. A smarter camper would stay at an area where they can overlook the map and try to recon the area.
LOL at that Barney guy. I had to kill him, he was just garbage. LOL
I forgot what my settings are, but I remember the default was too sensative so I slowed it down a bit. It actually feels too sensative still so I gotta change it again.
I won’t get able to get any games in until next week. I’m actually out of town right now. I get married tomorrow. LOL.
Back in town, now married. LOL. thanks for the congrats messages.

I’ll be on tonight.
EDIT:
I know some of you are waiting for reviews before deciding on the game. Here’s IGN’s review. Although I personally don’t usually agree with IGN’s reviews, this article was pretty accurate:
This quote pretty much sums up the review:
“When it works, the game is fun, and coordinating with your allies can be an engaging battlefield experience. When it doesn’t, you want to throw something through your television.”
An error in the review is that the stats do keep track of your progress - but you have to be in a clan to do so. The reviewer probably didn’t create/join clan. However, some of the stats do have errors.
After playing for 6+ hours, I’m still loving the game.
