Momochi made good use of the airborne frames of the short/fwd ruffian vs. blocked step-kick. So Cody technically has a 2 frame jump. Completely avoids TTs/throws get’s air reset by cl fierce. Loses to FS, sweep(short only?) and block(-7/-8 on block, respectively). Never seen a Cody do this before. Very crafty stuff.

yeah a lot of players use instant airborne moves against a blocked step kick, like juri st.mk…
I feel like technology for the other characters is advancing faster than ours… But I’m pretty uninspired lately
So I was messing around with the Zangief stuff HFX mentioned above. I could never get a normal throw to beat an SPD. I don’t know if it’s my timing or SPD has some throw invincibility or whatever.
But I did discover that if you stepkick, normal throw it beats everything except SPD. If you immediately do Tornado Throw it beats everything if they attempted backdash. Backdash SPD, ultra, super, greenhand etc. After messing with it some I found you can
- stepkick hit confirm fierce etc etc
- stepkick block confirm, normal throw - if backdash jab tornado throw
- stepkick block confirm, normal throw - if neutral jump, low fierce
The low fierce beats all Zang’s neutral jumps except roundhouse, but I don’t expect anyone to try that.
I’d make a video but I can’t edit all that stuff together on my iPhone.
P.S. I miss cvs2
Oh yeah, I was trying to work on some kind of tick tornado throw/ultra anti teleport option select but I couldn’t figure out how to apply it. It’s like an SNK super, down-to-forward forward-to-back PPP.
It only works against a teleport that switches sides with you, so its good vs. cornered opponents but I was having some difficulty still.
Any thoughts?

hey guys were the AE2012 changes for Abel announced? I haven’t played this game in a solid 7 months.
He pretty much got brought back to Super status. Except for Breathless, and additional + frames to 2nd low CoD FADC making cr. fp followup possible.

great more useless changes. 2nd low CoD FADC xx fierce xx CoD already did 50% on the reset. Didn’t need low fierce. Damage nerf from AE didn’t matter in the reset since it would scale.

Hey guys, I know 2012 just came out and the dust hasn’t really settled yet, but I was wondering if the general consensus is that Abel has good matches against these chars: Sim, Chun, Seth, Guile, and Sagat.
I’m a Honda main that’s looking for a sub to cover his worst matches. Someone suggested Abel to me (since I like grapplers anyway). Thanksss.
The 2012 changes didn’t really affect these match-ups. Sim, Guile, and Sagat are favorable to Abel. Chun has a slight edge. Seth feels even from my exp.
Ran into a makoto that kept doing that overhead air kick thing of hers after a knockdown… is simply blocking the only answer? I knew it was coming, tried cfp, fs , sfp. I then just blocked but i was hoping there was something to do when u know its coming.

if you know its coming you can block, ex roll out, some you can ex COD (maybe even armor cancel if youre able to)… i said some because dependin on the setup, sometimes you’ll get away with ex cod but you wont hit makoto and she will land behind you.
all those normals you tried would never work because im assuming that the makoto did the kick thing “meaty”, you either have to block or do a move with invincibility (ex roll) or armor(ex cod)
My normals weren’t working even when it was non meaty, it sucked cuz I felt like i timed it perfectly and was expecting to get cfp roll fs but it was getting stuffed everytime, also I’m pretty sure that move was armor breaking…ur saying there’s no way to stop majority from spamming this without meter?

You said that he did that on wake up and you couldnt beat it with anything but block… that situation is only possible if the tsurugi(the kick thing) is meaty.
If its not meaty version, then you can do a lot off things… iirc you can punish the recovery with neutral jump HK, you can even focus it… again, that move can be timed/spaced/set up in multiple ways its not easy to just say “how to avoid/punish this move” just like that… I was commenting based on the scenario you gave me, and that had to be meaty.
Besides the my earlier post regarding how to deal with it (blocking doesnt cost meter btw), id say the best way is for you to know her various setups for tsurugi… I dont know the details that well (Strider should be able to help in this since he mains Makoto too)… but tsurugi on wake up is usually meaty enough to punish backdash and beat anything abel have (besides blocking and some ex moves ive mentioned, oh maybe focus backdash can work too)…
The move is only armor breaking if its done as a reversal, and she cant do that on your wake up. Even its EX version doesnt have armor breaking property BUT it hits twice so it can break armor if both hits connect.
Finally, do try and test for yourself in training mode. Try to replicate the scenario that you’re trying to get out from. I dont know what else I can say but good luck?
I’m not sure about cr.hp beating tsurugi since that move does has a bigger hitbox…
Thanks for the advice, when hitting a successful knockdown he would run up, neutral jump and do the kick at the last second…maybe it was meaty but I’m not sure sometimes it felt like i woke up with plenty of time to aa it but nothing worked.
When i figure it out ill post cuz I’m sure other ppl have been abused by that before.
On another note…saw a Rico suave vid where he was doing fmk clp smp cod… I believe both times were against crouching ch but I’m notbposative, anyway why smp rather than sfp? Can this combo be done without ch? Why do this combo

That is meaty… Try looking up the definition of “meaty attack/meaties” again because it seems like you dont know what it means.
Id recommend you check the complete abel guide / beginners guide threads / learning the game basic system(like counter hits, reversals, the terms etc) since it seems to me that youre a beginner and those will help you answer your questions, plus it can take awhile for someone to answer your questions here… Anyway, this thread is mainly about character matchups but I’ll still answer this one post of yours here.
From a f.mk dash, you can only combo into close st.hp or close st.lp. On counter hit, you get more frame advantage, so you can combo into more than just those two.
C.lp links to both close st.mp or close st.hp BUT against some characters, the st.hp will whiff if they are hit while crouching where st.mp will hit. Close st.mp is also pretty safe on block compared to st.hp so in case that you messed up or if the cr.lp is blocked, you’ll still be safe (you still can eat a reversal between a blocked cr.lp and st.mp though)
I don’t know i would call myself a beginner…after ch stepkick against a crouched opponent ill do cfp to save meter or cmp to be safe but i was just confused as to why he was throwing that crouching jab in there cuz i figured with scaling it would do less.damage

my apologies, its kinda late here (4am now) and i was rather quick to judge you just from a few posts…
anyway, if i have to guess why he did that, its probably because he is hit confirming the combo? sometimes you get to react with cr.hp, but its easier(aka more time and safer) to hit confirm from a cr.lp… damage wise sure a ch f.mk cr.hp does the most damage but if you dropped the link, cr.hp on block is not safe, even if you cancelled into a roll you can get punished hard…
Thanks dude, I wasn’t taking it personally but just wanted to put it out there that I’m not a total beginner, I’ve been going.hard since vanilla but I do need to brush up on my terminology and understanding of frame data.
