I’m having issues with this match also, though I’m trying to find little key things in the match.

General stuff:

Abel’s st short counter pokes most things that Chun has relatively easy (cr RH, st strong, st RH). Only problem is that it’s a st short, very little damage is being done. Wait for her to get impatient and go from there, watch for fireballs.
Throwing out a random sweep occasionally is good as well as it does beat all her attacks and lands a knockdown. The downside to that is that she can walk in and out of range really easily because of her walk speed and bait it with little to no trouble.

I’d rather keep Chun at one ex bar this way she has to sacrifice either EX SBK or EX Legs xx ultra, which means you can keep pressure on and she has to sacrifice on of those abilities. This way you can throw out short wheel kicks and she can’t punish with Super.

The problem I’m having is once Chun gets a solid lead, how does Abel get it back? Its very easy for Chun to bait and punish a roll by throwing out st strongs and fireballs, just to keep you at bay.

Nick T when Chun has the life lead you quite simply have to take a risk to get a knock down whether that is from fa dash TT, ex COD, mid screen sweep etc

Once you get the knock down you have to know how to capitalize with safe jumps, OS’s and os sweep is your best friend in this match up

She can bait your roll, but you can move forward then block s.strong and her fireballs until she has pushed herself in the corner. Use c.mk to counter poke s.strong/rh/fierce. Or focus dash. Or sweep. Or step kick. There is time to react to hazanshus with focus or block.

This isn’t meant to be your clear cut answer and I understand where you’re coming from. It can be frustrating trying to get the lead back from Chun (or any other character for that matter), but you just have to know your options and try to read what your opponent is trying to do. And sometimes you have to be patient in that process. =p

Abel vs Chun is all about bait and capitalize. Usually, the match is hard because she can throw a lot of stuff out and be safe. The catch is, you have to find ways to make those same tactics, unsafe. If they stop throwing stuff out, then you can proceed to go in. But only when you know for a fact they’re thinking of how to be safe again. Then you start up new ways to bait and punish, get in, get damage, rinse, and repeat.

I know my description is very vague right now, but I’m being lazy. I’m like 3-1 with Abel vs Chun, and our local top player happens to use Chun. You can find those in the match thread if you want to see where I’m getting at with all this. Just follow the concept, whiff punish and bulldog in accordingly and you should be sitting fine in that match up.

oh man… godsgarden is tomorrow and my matchup knowledge against Gen and Dan are pretty shitty… anyone with any kinds of last minute pointers? Ive played good Dan players before and they kicked my ass with the lk flying kick pressure (much scarier than sagat tk pressure)…

There’s actually a local Gen player, so I can help a little bit.

Gen is better than Abel in air-to-air. His jumping fierce has priority or trades with everything I’ve tried (in both stances). I know you don’t tend to jump much, hfz, but I figured it’s worth saying. Here’s mantis j.hp and here’s crane j.hp.

Gen’s Dive Kick, on block, is pretty easily punished by cr.hp or TT.

All Gens have some sort of combo that leads into their HHS-ish attack. Bait it and roll behind them. Free punish. Most of the time, Gen will start HHS in mantis c.lk or crane c.lk. Sometimes, after a jump in, he’ll link crane s.mp into something into HHS. Anticipate a Gen using that a lot to keep you out. Here’s the HHS hitbox. You might be able to cross up with j.mk off of hands, but I dunno.

I’m not sure if to suggest U1 or U2. On both ultras, Gen can U1 on reaction. If you can j.mk cross up off of baited hands, cr.hp > U1 isn’t unreasonable. Go with whatever you tend to like more.

Hope that helped at least a bit.

Aside from the random throw setups that Gen gets from you being afraid of hitting buttons from getting counter hit, there isn’t a WHOLE lot that he can do. Only problem with this match is without a bar, Gen has all the momentum kinda. He can chip you with hands and just kinda push you to the corner and you don’t have a real threatening answer.

Gen has no good wakeup, so always watch for up kicks.
His crossup was a bit of an issue in Vanilla, not so much in Super, its not as scary.
One TT usually resets any momentum that you lost and puts it back in your favor.
Gen cant really do A LOT about crossups, or any serious kind of pressure aside from mashing throw or upkicks. You can frame trap the hell out of him.
Keep him in front of you, otherwise, he can’t do anything. His whole game revolves around hands and landing the crossup or getting near near. AA with cr mk, and neutral jump fierce/RH.

I guess I’ll try to play keep out against Dan… It seems that st.mp, st.hp and st.mk can be used to do so (not foolproof though)…

So much guessing in this matchup. sigh

yea make it clear to the gen player that you will not let him get in through the air. Anti air the shit outta him and make him stay on the ground and find a way to get in. His normals are weird and annoy me but just be aware and get in.

hey can anyone give me tips on handling characters that have good neutral jump attacks? i just block and im scared to do anything risky. so all i do is block and try and tech throws. this just leads me to eventually screwing or forcing myself to be stuck under there neutral jump mixup pressure stuff so anyone got tips on what to do to get out or AA him?

Roll

Stand fierce, you can cancel that into a roll and follow with a mixup. If you watch some of Juicebox’s matches he’s good with using stand fierce as a neutral jump punisher.

exactly make the Gen player know that jumping will NOT be free and he WILL be punished and mixed up for it.

I swear the Abel Rufus match up frustrates me more than Abel Gief

Even more so than Chun Li? At least when rufus gets meter you can bait Ex messiah with rolls and punish, prior to rufus getting meter i think you just need to guess right once or twice tog et your damage, and once he has meter be wary of it. But you probably already knew that. Chun Li’s do my head in with their gdlk pokes :frowning:

You can counterpoke chun with cr.mk buffering cod or you can focus her pokes (they have such long recovery) dash in and TT, jump over and jab (its weird but usually beats out her AA’s), block kikouken and then ex cod to hit the poke that usually follows or even just do random cod and fadc to get in.
The matchup still frustrates me though because I don’t know how to punish her backdash even when I know its coming. She goes way too far for the sweep to connect and doing cod gives an air reset. Anyone got any tips?

If you know the dash is coming then dash into her and TT.

if you know the dash is coming ultra.

if you know the dash is coming wheel kick.

if you know the dash is coming sweep.

if you know the dash is coming roll and keep close the distance.

a lot of things can be done if you know what shes gonna do.

reacting, on the other hand…

I find the Chun match up much easier than the Rufus one and I play very good Rufus’ and very good Chuns lol

In the Chun match up option select sweep is amazing

After a falling sky knockdown on Chun you have to bait SBK but also be prepared for the back dash

But after a TT j.mk os sweep is amazing and forces Chun to block and once you have Chun blocking you can push her to the corner and it’s so much easier to deal with her footsies there.

I played F-Words Ibuki yesterday in a loooonnnggg set it finished 20-19 to him I’m considering doing a write up but I’ve never done one before so I’m worried it won’t be good or as indepth as some of the shit HAV has posted. Like the Bison match up which should be the standard for every match up in this thread its that sick.

do it, Natty!

go for it.
