Boxing Thread

well, it is true. But i think all of us are biased toward boxing anyway.

was the pundit guy really trying to say that all mma guys are good boxers at first? if so, shamrock def put his ass in place. mma striking for the most part looks like bar room brawl, not a sweet science.

for most mma guys very true but their are some guys who have some good boxing. like bj penn. mma boxing does look a bar room braw because obviously in boxing you dont have to worry about someone grabbing your arm, or leg, flying knee, being kneed in the clinch. mma boxing looks like paranoid boxing for obvious reasons. hence it obviously wont look very refined.

yeah that is true, but i was referring more to the way they wing their punches. granted getting hit with a fist is different from getting hit with a glove, but way too many guys are prone to just ducking their head and swinging wildly.

that said, barrera/khan in march. i think barrera is gonna turn khan’s lights out. i saw khan’s last fight and i wasn’t particularly impressed.

??? barrera Khan??/ i thought MAB was retired.

PLEASE GOD let antonio barrera smash Khan’s face in

2009 is starting off well. ESPN’s Friday Night Fights (FNF) is providing some good match ups and Showtime as well, should be sold boxing action tonight and on Saturday.

Yuriorkis Gamboa maybe a the hottest prospect in boxing but the dude’s chin is suspect like Amir Khan. He got dropped four times in his last four fights, I believe. I don’t like how he drops his hands down often, but is very explosive, offensively. In two years, Gamboa will be ready.

Andre Berto (WBC) vs. Luis Collazo (HBO): Andre’s first real test. Collazo is a legit top 10 fighter and a win by either fighter is a huge win and can lead to a fight with the Margarito’s and Cotto’s. I like Andre Berto, a real solid fighter. I like his youth and how he is just as fresh in the 12th round as he is in the first. Collazo is no pushover so this should be a real good fight in which the winner should unify with Joshua Clottey (IBF) because Margarito and Cotto’s schedule are tied up with each other for a half a year.

Marco Antonio Barerra vs. Amir Khan: is Khan trying to get revenge for Prince Naseem or something? How sad that Barerra is reduced to being a gatekeeper. I don’t like this fight at all. Even with MAB way past his prime, Khan still has that China chin that Barerra can crack if he still has the power at lightweight.

I’m looking forward to going down to Staples to see the Margarito - Mosley fight. I’m gonna hate that L.A. traffic though.

Just finished reading ESPN’s weekly notebook and hearing the Margarito vs. Cotto II fight being in “MSG” on the eve of the Puerto Rican day parade. MSG is gonna be crazy loud with all the boricua supporting Cotto

lol Yuriorkis Gamboa looks like a beast fighter but nigga just gets tapped and he falls.

i wish berto would fight more, him and p. williams are my fav fighters of the moment since pretty boy and hopkins are effectively retired.

HOLY SHIT! didn’t anybody see the fight last night? twas a war. berto got the W, but one of the judges was def on crack with the way he had the fight scored, shit was ridiculously close. collazo has a serious chin

i saw the last couple rounds last night. shit was hot, havent seen a fight like that in a while.

finished watching it. Awesome fight, very close. Two young hungry lions. Andre Berto validated his title belt.

Welterweights:

  1. Antonio Margarito (WBA)

  2. Miguel Cotto (WBO “when” be beats that UK fighter next month)

  3. Joshua Clottey (IBF, the most avoided fighter in boxing right now)

  4. Andre Berto (WBC)

Andre Berto vs. Joshua Clottey meets the winner of Marg. vs. Cotto II to unite all four belts. This is too easy not to happen

I felt Callazo won the fight, but it was pretty close and I can see how they scored for Berto. And I’m glad Max Kellerman blasted that retard judge who scored it 116-111 for Berto.

Can’t wait to see Angulo rip Mayorga to shreds, and hopefully Mayorga never shows his face again.

That was a SICK fight.

Berto got EXTREMELY LUCKY getting that W. Especially with that -1 for clinching…

that was a bullshit deduction imo, but yeah.

and if you’re talking welterweights how are you not including paul williams? after the way he handled margarito i think he’s easily the best guy in that division.

edit- NVM

theres no such thing as mma boxing. Frank expressed two things there as I read him. 1. That boxing is an intrical part of successful MMA, and 2. That you need that training, and you just adjust it for integrating the other ranges.

When you do that of course, it doesnt stop being Boxing, which is unique in the old breakdown of differing standup fighting styles (Karate, Kung Fu, etc.).
Stances adjust in boxing as anyone who knows boxing 101 will tell you, and there in fact is no one classical boxing stance that boxing depends on in order to be called boxing.

Jonny Rhodes and Pat Smith showed us all by UFC 2 what a boxing trained set of hands could do and thats why all the MMA training centers use it today, adjusted to the job you have to do under any rules, and all the fights start off boxing.punch them in the brain the most efficient way possible the way its been refined in boxing hands for centuries.

right now, it seems that Paul Williams have gave up his campaign at 147. He vacated his WBO title ( that he won by beating Margarito of course) and “nobody” at 47 wants to do anything with Paul Williams. That is a matter of fact. So Paul is not going to hold his breath for a fight at 47 and has begun his campaign at 154 and 160.

Paul Williams vs. Winky Wright at 160 at April . If Paul gets by Winky, he’ll make a case to fight Vernon Forrest at 54 or Kelly Pavlik at 60. Williams is very versatile when it comes to fighting at multiple weight classes like Pacquiao.

Hatton vs. Pacquiao - why is it taking so damn long to make this fight offical.

imo - Paul Williams vs. Antonio Margarito II will happen at 154 when Marg goes up in weightclass.

cuz pacquiao wants to feed all of the phillipines?
