Boxing Thread

Once again boxing bookies avoid disaster with Valuev winning decision I read. Any insight?

Holyfield was at +4xx last time I checked.

More like the Real Deal got a Raw Deal.

Word around the campfire is that Hatton vs. Pacquiao is looking to become a reality for a May fight. What’s the consensus here?

After watching highlights of the Patton vs. Mayweather fight, Hatton can easily take Pacquiao’s punch with his Juggernaut super armor and hulk smash through Pacquiao’s fast offense.

lmao. what about the hatton/mayweather fight led you to that conclusion? hatton’s face smashing to the turnbuckle? or the picture of him on his back with the lights on but nobody home?

i think mayweather is a better boxer than pac, but pac would hit hatton with WAY more bombs than mayweather did. i’d expect it to end sooner too but in the same fashion.

I think you are trying too hard for an anti- pac post. Come back with a more thoughtful analysis. it’s the down time for boxing. give it a rest. discussions should pick up again near Jan 24. for the Margarito vs. Mosley fight.

If anyone is going to see the Marg. vs. Mosley fight live, hit me up, I’m planning to see this one live.

You’re probably right, I do have anti-pacquiao tendencies. But Hatton took a lot of good clean shots from Mayweather and still was the aggressor. In the end it didn’t work, but I believe that to be Hatton’s fault for not changing things around, and also Mayweather adapting to Hatton’s game.

Pacquiao is fast. But if he plans to fight Hatton, his speed will need to be on dodging his punches and countering as opposed to wailing on Hatton and hoping that the punches will be effective for the ref to call a TKO. Hatton isn’t an old boxer looking for a paycheck. He’s essentially the same age as Pacquiao, but he also has a style different than any other boxers Pacquiao has faced.

Also, Pacquiao needs to be smart and not let Hatton control the pace. If Pacquiao gets into Hatton’s slugfest style, its going to be scary to watch.

hatton’s style is pretty simple, he just pushes people around uses his power on the inside. or in other words, he fights how DLH fought mayweather and how we EXPECTED DLH to fight pacquiao. the way to beat that is with “crisp, clean, effective punching” as lederman would say. now that pac has shown that he can bob and weave, taking down hatton seems like a formality to me.

Got a question about Mike Tyson, well more what IF’s

if he didnt go to prsion, how do you think he would have turned out, ringside and outside of it ?

i think he would’ve rematched buster douglas and got his belt back and then dominated holyfield, bowe, lewis, etc… this is of course assuming he didn’t get into some other legal trouble.

good “what if” question to think about:

I grew up with Iron Mike in the mid/ late 80’s and he destroyed everyone in spectacular fashion:
Teaver Berbick, Larry Holmes, Michael Spinks (his best win IMO), Frank Bruno.

In the 90’s, if Tyson didn’t goto prison and stayed active after his loss by Buster Douglas

INSIDE THE RING: Most likely a rematch with Buster Douglas. Then a match with Evander Holyfield while still in his prime. Although his competition would have been very tough compared to his career in the 80’s. Tyson might have fought Lennox Lewis mush sooner or even a Riddick Bowe/ Michael Moorer. Tyson vs. Tommy Morrison would had been interesting match up or a David Tua, Ike Ibeabuchi or even an old George Foreman would had been a mega fight. I think Mike still would have his speed and power and his skills would not have eroded in prison, but his personal life would have a huge effect on him inside the ring.

OUTSIDE THE RING: this is was have affected his in ring performance. If Mike didn’t go to prison, he have gone into the dark side because of Don King. Don would have Milked Mike for all he was worth. Mike fired ( or Don King) his long time trainer and Mike’s inner circle from the old days in Catskill, NY is all gone: cus d amato, kevin rooney. His personal life was a mess with his strange marriage to Robin Givens and the way he was before going to prison ,he was in the tabloids on, what seemed like, a daily basis. it was a matter of time before Mike would have done something stupid. He would probably have so many court cases/ lawsuits against him. It was probably inevitable Mike Tyson would have gone to prison for one thing or another.

He was def the last greatest boxer ever, now he’s gone it has just hit me how shit boxing is now

I was born the exact same night and year that Mike Tyson got koed by Buster Douglas.

Feb. 11, 1990

Maybe if I would have actually became a star boxer that would have been a more interesting fun fact

I.

Was just rewatching Margarito vs Cotto the other day(and a couple of his older fights) and shit, Margarito deserves my money. If I can’t actually WATCH it, I’ll record it. But I’ll try my hardest to.

^Anyone check this out yet?
2009 is definitely a good year.

Hell Yes

Just found out about it the other day. There’s a video on youtube showcasing all the improvements over 3 and such. 4 seems much, much faster paced which is a big plus. All the other improvements sound really good too.

lets see if i can find the video…/

I bought the $150 section. I may have a ticket (or 2) free if someone changes their mind at the last minute. Don’t count on it, but I’ll let you know if you are interested to go. Me and my brothers are coming down from Northern Cal.

Good that you mentioned Margarito, I just made a highlight vid from the Cotto fight just for kicks:

My short opinion on the Margarito vs. Mosley fight:

Margarito has been fighting “Mosleys” all his career meaning fighters with better foot movement and faster hand speed. Fighting Mosley is nothing new to Marg.

I don’t know much about Mosley’s early career (lightweight division), but how many “Margaritos” have Mosley fought? Margarito is the ultimate pressure fighter and it is hard for anyone smaller then Margarito to win. Margarito’s main loses were from fighters taller then him: Daniel Santos, Paul Williams.

Spinks vs Tyson was on ESPN Classic the other night. I wouldn’t say it was Tyson’s best fight but it was still good. I prefer the Berbick fight.

I’m actually planning on going with my brother too, he’ll be going to LA and staying there for a couple of days, not sure if I’ll be able to make it that week though.

Nice vid. Cotto was landing some nice combinations the whole fight, but Margarito’s pressure eventually got to him. I think one of the commentators said it best, “It’s like hitting a brick wall that just keeps coming at you” or something along those lines. And yeah what you said is pretty much right, Margarito has been fighting “Mosleys” throughout his career. I doubt he’ll have to come up with anything new for this fight.

As I said before, the shots Cotto was landing on Margarito would’ve probably literally paralyzed most other fighters. I’ve been watching boxing my whole life and that was the first time I ever felt disturbed by what I was seeing.
