So, not to be “that n*gga” or anything, but last night’s episode wasn’t funny at all. Not only was it objectively not funny, it’s probably the least funny episode of the entire series. Although that’s probably not all McGruder’s fault.
It wasn’t funny because it’s 2010, not 2008. Maybe if this episode had been released around the time of the election, or the inaguration, then it would have been way funnier; instead, it came off as a rehash of all the jokes/themes we (black folks and people in general) have been making for the last two years. See:
“Black people think they’re gonna come up because the president is black.” - Kat Williams’ last comedy special; any post election column by Roland Martin
"Jeremiah Wright jokes" - Mike Epps last comedy special (Under Rated)
“White people, people generally thinking shit’s gonna change because Obama got elected and being dissapointed when it doesn’t.” - South Park Episode, "About Last Night"
Or anything Charles Barkley had to say during the election.
“Black politicians only voting for him because he’s black.” - Colin Powell
It’s all been done already and trying to do it two years later just didn’t work IMO.
And before you say, “Oh, you just didn’t get it.” Yes, I did. The point he was trying to make with Huey, i.e. Obama’s election is the death knell for black-issue oriented black leaders that fit the Black Panther/Malcolm X/MLK type mold, I got it. It was done poorly.
The Dick Riding Obama song would have been funnier if we hadn’t already seen it.
The DMX reference would have been funny, but it happened so long ago and DMX is so barely relevant now - (and that hurts, cause that’s my dog) - I’d venture that a lot of people didn’t get it the first time around.
That entire episode came off as a parody of an episode of the Boondocks. Like someone else said, “Hmmm, if MacGruder was going to make an episode about the election, what would he say?” and went out and tried to make an episode.
Again, not all of this is his fault, the episode might have come off better when it was more culturally relevant; but last night was a failure. I thought South Park handled the topic much better/funnier. Since I’ve been lurking for a while, and there were some posts on here that indicate that the reason for the delay was a contractual impasse between CN and MacGruder; or that he was pissed because CN pulled the BET episode-I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and keep watching, but that was wack.
** Now, the irony of this is that people are going to respond to this post like people responded to Huey when he said he was “eh” on Obama. Oh well.**
