Bloody Roar

Like everyone else pretty much said it’s all about part 1 and 2. I played BR a lot when it first came out…game was fun playing with all my friends. Then when part 2 came out thats when I really got down and dirty with the game. To answer Dr.B’s question I mainly used Alice (the rabbit girl) my main, Uriko (the cat girl half human) and the mole guy (forgot his name) in Part 2. In part 1 I used everyone pretty much, though in part 2 I did as well. I used to have a friend that was a beast with Stun in BR2, also another friend who used Long (the wolf guy) really well in BR2. But besides that it was all fun to play back then to play with anyone. I need to get me copies of these games for sure. Alright later all.

BR3 (PS2/Arcade version, not that Primal Fury/Xtreme crap) is my favorite gameplay wise as long no one uses the hidden characters. I think BR2 is cool too and I think everyone like it cause it had better presentation like comparing Alpha3 to Alpha2.

My favorites were Yugo (wolf), Shina (cheetah), Bakaryu (mole), and Stun (insect).

Heard Shenlong was top tier in Japan when BR3 was popular. I can see why with his Six-Circle Combo system, fast pokes, and weird backturn fighting style. I would have like to play as ShenLong more but never picked up on his Six-level Combo ring system enough to make him effective. I mean I like the game and all but not super serious enough to try to remember that crap. Yugo’s Free Combo System was much easier to use and just as effective if you picked the right moves to use during the cancel points.

I’m lovin BR Extreme right now(I wish they had an option to let you choose between anime scenes and cg, but ah well). My fav character is Cronos, his fighting style rocks imo. He’s not very powerful in human form, but he has very good juggling abilities(not nearly as good as Uriko’s, but pretty good), he’s fast, he has counters that come in handy, he can drain your beast bar and add it to his own, his penguin form is pretty tough(it’s weak, but very hard to hit), and the Phoenix is godlike, gamebreaking even imo. You can do sooo many insane combos in Phoenix form, it’s fucking nuts. And his third beast drive is very damaging if you hit with it. Sadly people usually hate Cronos, due to him being rather um… “elegant” and because he touches uriko’s face in her ending. he’s my fav character tho.

And BR1 fucking rocks so hard… the impact of the moves and everything. I even remember how sometimes if you hit an opponent, they’d double over and vomit or cough up blood from the force of the attacks. It was a cool feature imo, made it seem so much more brutal. And I really miss Fox, he was the best. Jenny is ok, but it still sucks they stole Fox’s moves, and gave them to Jenny and Xion.

And anyone here use Uranus? She’s pretty fucking broken… altho, she has poor defense, since she dies kinda fast. And her hyper beast has very poor defense, she dies so fucking fast, you really gotta be careful. They fucked her up in BR4 imo, she used to be extremely fast, she feels so damn sluggish in 4. And am I the only one who actually prefers Cronos over Reiji? I don’t hate Reiji, it’s just I liked Cronos’ fighting style and beast forms and overall character design more. Reiji looks more like a reject Tekken design with a beast form.
And yeah, Nagi is hot, i’d hit her ass HARD. Sadly she’s also an uber cheap bitch. Fucking cheap ass counter evade, uber fast, and easily linkable attacks, very easy to juggle with, and an unblockable beast drive that is hard to avoid. Goddamn…

Ok,alot of people complain about the game is broken…well GG was broken,MVC2 and CVS1&2 are broken (to some people). Thing is alot of people are afraid to try new shit. Bloody Roar 1 & 2 are awesome to me. Yeah you can button mash and get away with it, but i’ve seen people do that in SF 3rd strike and win. I like the enviroments, the characters and just the fact that it was different but good. And i played with on of the most technical guys in the game…LONG/Shen long. The game is good but gets over shadowed by he rest…i can still see long whoop LAW’s ass anyday.

Sorry i had to post this…Zangief from SF ex vs the woman from the first bloody roar that was the wild boar. :wow: she was sooooo good they got rid of her and made the beetle and the chameleon guy…now that’s hard core you take away one character and make two from that one. :encore: SHE RULES :karate:

Long/Tiger, Jenna/Bat,??/Lion and when i wanted to be cheap ???/Chimera

Bloody Roar 3 is the only one I take seriously, so it’s pretty much my favorite.

Bloody Roar 1 started something cool, part 2 just made it better, and then 3 made it a fast-paced slugfest (back when it first came out, it was one of the fastest games I’d ever played on PS2).

After that, I felt the series was getting dumbed down TERRIBLY with the introduction of Bloody Roar: Primal Fury/Extreme…my reasons being:
-rapidly tapping the Guard button to “dodge” attacks
-Forward+Guard being a throw on BOTH Standing and Crouching opponents
-the redone, ever so crappy “Hyper Beast” system which was the most broke shit EVER.
-more and more and MORE button-mashing Mid & Low mix-ups (from characters like Uriko, Jenny, and Xion)
-shitty story

Now I don’t know if any of that crap had anything to do with the fact that it was on Gamecube, but I have to admit the game has some nice graphics, GREAT stages, and one of the best Bloody Roar soundtracks ever. Then Bloody Roar 4 came to PS2. We had the same damn game, but with some more dumb problems:
-removal of the “Air Chase” system (you can only get it with your broke-ass Custom character)
-removal of the “Double Crouch”
-the new “Hold Guard to enter EVASION MODE” or whatever the hell that was…system…
-more and more and MORE button-mashing Mid & Low mix-ups (from characters like Uriko, Jenny, Xion, and Reiji)
-shitter story

After that, I was like “FUCK IT” and sorta gave up on the whole series ever getting better. But I really do hope they pick the series back up, because it had potential, and it had a bad-ass cast of characters. Yugo is pretty much one of my favorite video game characters ever, and I really liked Alice, Bakuryu, Long, and Shenlong.

As far as memories, I’m sticking with the old-ass Bloody Roar 3; it was slightly more techincal, least scrubby (even though all of the Bloody Roar games were basically scrubby), and had one of the better storylines in the series…but I still like the entire Bloody Roar series as a whole. I miss it already.

And people who think Uranus is fair are crackheads.

ah, the thread lives again. My "friend " I’ve referred to here as “Dumbass” ambush-visited me the other day, and he’s also into Bloody Roar, but he didn’t seem interested in playing though. This was actually for the best tho, as when he inevitably lost horribly to me…I’d bet everything the guy would just blame the GC controllers. That would be a valid complaint if it were anyone else with some measure of skill…but oh no…remember…this guy is The Worst Gamer of All Time. He’d also throw out the “I haven’t played this in a long time” excuse to further soften to blow to his ego.

*sidenote—I’d love to see a Bloody Roar anime/cartoon…these characters and that premise have huge potential to become a very entertaining show, imo. Some good writers could go crazy with this concept really…as the games only half-way touched on the “story”. (In some cutscenes, it’s really unclear what’s even going on…or why it’s happening.)

Wow, this is a long time ago.

Well…I have Bloody Roar 4. I played it and threw people with Nagi. I wouldn’t mind being on the end of that throw, but other than that the game looks like shit. I’ve since erased it from my HDD and am installing MGS3. Much better use of the disk space.

I have to agree with most of you’ll. BR1 and BR2 were always my fav. The game so much like a 2D fighting game even tho it was 3D. I just didn’t like how so many things can be done by button mashing

I’ve only really played br3. I liked it. I liked it even more after i watched some japanese match videos. I played with shenlong, alice, uriko and sometimes batgirl. The game can be technical and I think that after a certain amount of time scrubs/mashers just stop winning. To beat someone who can’t play, you only really need 1-2 hits. All the resets and combos take care of the rest. This is especially true with alice/uriko/shenlong (only cuz i know how to play with them…prolly true for all).

I would love to discuss strategy, but this game is dead.

Bloody Roar is one of the best “average” fighters. Some nice characters, good controls, but not really great.

Oh, and Fox is considered male in the US version, but in PAL manuals it’s a woman. Weirdness.

I know it’s a long shot, but you wouldn’t happen to still have those BR3 vids would you? I never saved them but wished I did. I only have some of BR:Primal Fury and all it does is prove how retarded the redone Hyper Beast system was.

Mashers get beaten easily cause they will usually bust out the ugliest attack string that has a lot of lag on it so it’s easy to punish them.

Edit: Ukiro mashers were weak since she had little to no range. So while they mash away you just backstep and counter with a good poke or the universal guard break (absorbs high/mid attacks) for the counter hit. The only true masher character was Uranus’s human form, she was actually too fast to react to while guarding and most of her attacks had knockdown properties on it that gave her access to easy juggles (like the ones the CPU does, but human players can come up with much worse).

They did a manga, which is what Extreme/Primal is loosely fashioned off of. There’s only 2 books as far as I’ve seen.

yeah, the game was a bit button masher friendly… I think uriko had it the worst… she had too many fast hi/low attacks and most of her shit was safe…
but back when playing it, it wasnt so bad. with so many over the top things and ringouts not being that hard to do, it wasnt so much of a real fighter as just a fun action game.

Man, I really liked its cool modes… something they should have kept. Ability to make the stages dark, walls invisible, trancelike, invisible lifebars…
just had you and the other guy off in the distance… and had to beat the crap out of them until they were dead… it had enough stuff to keep it interesting. And on the whole a good diversity of characters, silly or otherwise. Ahh, now I wanna go find BR and play it…

Ah, yes…Bloody Roar: The Fang. Available at www.animenation.com

I use to be a big fan of BR, especially when 3 rolled around. Although I would have to consider myself a button master to an extent. But I always knew what was going to come out when I pushed the buttons so it was sort of skill and sort of mashing.
I wish I could see some vids though, I mean I think everyone on that game is somewhat broken, so there’s probably much about the game I don’t know.

hint: I use to love playing BR3 and evading the computer’s moves. Shit looked nasteh’ =D

LOL Shermie Spiral (emphasis mine).

But I kinda share your experience too. While I wouldn’t flat-out call it ‘shit’, it is indeed pretty much ‘eh’.

Yeah i still have the vids. I only have msn though, so if you have it just add yup98@hotmail.com and i’ll hook you up. Quality ain’t that great but i learned an awesome amount of stuff from the vids.

Ok, I really do love talking about what br3 had at high play. It may have been a bit broken but fun. Ok, alice had a chain after a launcher that did like 80% damage. And you really can’t escape it. I mean you could but only by dodging in the air. She also had an air throw to try and tack on extra damage after combos (you could escape air throws but difficult and confusing). Creates guessing game in the air as well.

Shenlong was disgusting (or atleast how i played him lol). The biggest deal of damage was dealt by getting some launcher out. Hopefully one that can’t be recovered. Then jump and do p, k, b string. If you want you can do again, but can be air dodged…not blocked though. The best though is to run under them. They will most likely recover. This is the greatness. If they recover they can’t even block because their back is to you. Pressing b will make u do that back move with shenlong that does crazy damage. Or you could mix it up and do something low so they mistime a dodge. They can’t even really attack you. You could let them land during their recovery, and they will land with back to you. If you do 2k (i think), you can do 66b after and that launches them again. Unblockable, difficult to dodge and insane damage.

Uriko was similar when she launches somebody but she had another combo that was just sick. Go into cat mode QCF + b i believe and do k (i think its k, but it might be soemthing else…she hits low and it puts them in stun). Then press up + b. Now they been comboed into air without recovery. Do b, b, b (maybe one more b at end don’t remember…its a 4 hit combo, but the last button press does 2 hits). At this point they will bounce of the ground, again without recovery and then QCF + b again. And press up + b instantly. Rinse and repeat. There is one place they can recover, between last two hits before rebounce. But its difficult. I say do it 1 or 2 times and then on relaunch just jump, do kk, then run under mix it up.

You’re talking to a person who is so much into BR that he can pretty much recite each story from each game

Anyway, I own all the BR games except for BR4 (which is hella hard to find here) and Extreme. In number one, I use Alice, Yugo and Greg, in number two, I use Long, Stun, Bakuryu, and Uriko.

Jenny plays much like Fox from the first game (Fox was a WOMAN, not a man in the JP version), and I never liked Fox, so I never use Jenny.

Number three, well, I use pretty much everyone. Except for Uranus. I’ll have to play the game again later to post some combos.

And for all y’all that think this game is a button-masher, put any one of the BR games on its highest difficulty and try to beat it by button-mashing. You’ll probably only get thru one fight at the most; just think what would happen if you went up against an experienced player.
