so bad news is bad…
the gallery opening is good to go, but the “Main Event” may need to find a new home. when I booked this back in september there was never any mention of monies being required beyond my canoe membership. in fact I became a member of canoe primarily to hold this event, as I was told that it was required unless I had money to rent the venue. today I found out that the event will be a minimum of $500. granted $300 of that is refundable IF I clean the venue after, AND the bar takes in at least $300.
so now I’m left feeling kinda bitter and wondering what to do. my options as I see them are thus;
- charge a cover to get in and hope that enough people show up to cover my costs (100 heads at $5.00)
- beg the community for help (donation jar by the door, kinda suck as I don’t really have the cash in the first place)
- move the event to another venue (suck option because the art wouldn’t be there)
- bag the whole thing
a little history, in october my wife and I bought a house, 10 days after moving in we discovered that all of the plumbing needed replaced including the sewer line, the quotes we got before closing were bogus and it ended up costing us about 20K. so needles to say I don’t have a lot of extra cash laying around right now. yeah yeah sob story…
I’d really like to hear some feedback from you guys, this whole money thing kinda came out of the blue and really threw a monkey wrench into the works. I am talking to the venue people and trying to somehow beg my way out of this or see if they will volunteer their time to make it happen.
You’ve got $10 from me the next time I see you going straight to the venue, and I don’t think a small cover charge for the final event of Tournament Wars is going to be a huge problem to make the event happen in the first place. That venue is amazing, and if we can stay most of the night, I think we have some people who will probably spend $300 at the bar by themselves. Haha.
$500 rent with $300 refundable? That’s amazing! $200 for that place for one night is incredible. Don’t get discouraged David. That is a very solvable problem.
I’ve spent over $100 myself at TWarz in a single night. Suppose everyone mans the fuck up and buys a drink or three and I can see the bar raking in the scrilla. There will be many stacks and not enough rubber bands to keep that bitch under control.
You can always whore yourself out to 50 hot chicks for $10 each… Or 5 fat chicks for $100 each.
Just kidding David. I’ll be honest, I’m sure they will get plenty in the bar that night, not to mention I would be inclined to donating some for the cause.

A cover does seem like the best option. is $5.00 to much? here’s a little run down on what the “Main Event” will include
3-6pm free play/casuals/practice so far I have 6 confirmed setups (my two plus 4 from play and trade). we have the space for anyone to bring a setup and you better believe I’ll be asking everyone who can to do so.
A screening of I Got Next, Ian won’t be able to make it so he’s recorded an intro video for Bloody-Knuckles and I’ll also be running the new trailer for the feature length cut.

TW grand finals
SFIV, Tekken6, and whatever else people want, singles tournaments. I want to keep the buy in for these the same as the TW singles ($5.00) so for $10 you get three hours of free play plus your tourney games
prizes for SFIV include the cash pot and some SF swag for top three plus a custom dual modded TE that I’ve built for 1st.
prizes for Tekken 6 include the cash pot plus a box full of tekken swag that Namco-Bandai sent me.
all finals will be projected on a 200" screen, as well as pool play of whatever pool happens to be on that setup
the venue is booked from 3-11pm on the 28th, if we go over it’s $25/hr and will be at the mercy of the event manager and bartender. my plan was to do last call at 11 and start trying to clear the venue so I can get to the cleaning.
I’ll help you clean up afterwards, as well as buy many drinks from the bar and make a donation to the costs of running this.
