BLAZBLUE: Q&A For newcomers (PLEASE POST/CHECK HERE BEFORE MAKING A THREAD!)

Holy shit man, nice write up. After reading through them all and watching some videos showcasing them, I think I’m going to keep an eye on Valkenhayn. His mechanics almost seem to be half inspired by Bloody Roar, which is a game I used to love to playing way back when. He does seem to be the anti-thesis of a beginner character though, so I’ll have to see how that goes.

Other than that, I’ve noticed that I almost always take a defensive mindset when trying out fighting games, but strongly dislike defensive projectile-based zoning characters like Dr.Doom in MVC. So I think Mu-12 might fit the bill in that regard. Saying that though, my defensive mindset might just be something I do as a FG noob on instinct, so again, I’ll just have to see.

Seriously though dude, that’s a nice bite sized write up of every character in the game. You basically just cleared my weekend, since I was just planning to research the characters and decide which one I was going to play while the game slowly made its way here. I guess I’ll go…study or something now.

Mu CAN zone, but it’s sortof weird and awkward a lot of the time - it works against Tager, mostly, because his movement options are less good than the rest of the cast and it can be used to frustrate other characters a bit, but generally people familar with her will find a way in.

Some pretty good high level Mu play here; You can see how she plays a bit of a zoning game, but also mostly uses those projectiles to cover her when she wants to attack (particularly apparent in the Hakumen match). She’s also strong defensively from an ‘up close’ perspective, because her DP is pretty darn good.

Valk is definitely tough to learn, because wolf form movement and cancels are a whole different game compared to a lot of the cast - he’s able to cancel a lot of his human form moves into a wolf transformation that also moves him around, and in wolf mode he has, essentially, an 8 way command dash that moves him quickly in any direction, but eats up his wolf meter in a hurry. I don’t even really know enough about how he works to really explain it. Oh, and yeah, important detail - you can’t block in wolf form. @_@ Valk is one of the weaker characters defensively, since he has very weak options for escaping pressure.

Well…that’s definitely something worth knowing. On the bright side, I’m really digging Mu the more I see of her.

I guess what I meant to say is that I like the idea of a character who’s decent and versatile at any range, so I don’t mind if she’s not as strong at keeping people out as the other zoning characters in the game. (speaking of which) My only real concern at this point is with Lambda, she kind of looks like she could wipe the floor with Mu. Looks like I’m gonna have to check out that matchup thread I saw a while back on Dustloop.

I have no idea how the Lambda/Mu matchup goes, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a proper matchup ‘chart’ for the game, but I think it’s pretty even, if only because Mu’s damage output can be so massive.

Hey BB community! I have been a big fan of BB and GG, but never really got a hold of any of them, and while going to on vaction, I saw that BB extend came out! I picked it up for a good price, and well I was hoping to see if there are any xbl players that would like to play, and help me get into the groove of this game. I use to play GG back in the day but very casually. And I have been a big SF4 player for a few years. I was hoping to see if some people would like to give some pointers to this noob. It will be quite appreciated. Thanks!

Sure thing; What timezone are you in?

I am in pacific time

Anyone still play CS instead of EX? Not willing to drop all that cash on EX right now. I haven’t played in months, so I’m going to be terrible.

Guessing I’m the only Noel player?

EX is inexplicably expensive, even used, even now, yeah.

But no, I upgraded a while back, as did everyone I’m aware of.

Yeah I’ve been wanting a PS3 copy myself, but it’s still way more than I want to pay for a game I already own.

Yup. I check Amazon almost daily for used copies, and the cheapest I’ve ever seen is like $25+shipping. (For PS3. Xbox copies seem to be a LITTLE cheaper and I once saw one for $20.)

I guess people like holding onto their copies of this.

So, I’m getting frustrated with Makoto mission 6. I have trouble getting the super out, but when I do get it, it HITS and I still don’t get the mission completed. What am I doing wrong?

Off the top of my head, I dunno; It’s possible they’re teching and then getting hit after they recover. I’ll try it when I get home and see how it works out for me.

Okay; I found the problem you’re having. It’s the same thing that happens with the D attack in the previous trial - they want you to do the super at level 3, and they don’t count it if you don’t. Just hold down the D button during the super animation until you get a level 3, and you’ll be all set.

Cool, I got it, thanks.

Just purchased Blazblue Continuum Shift Extended for my ps vita. Quite unsure of what I should be doing. I’ve done a few tutorials, tried out every character, etc.

I’m still stuck on who to main. It’s one of these: Valkenhayn, A-11, Rachel, Litchi, Bang.

I enjoy characters who are able to rushdown well and do some zoning here and there. My execution is quite good as well, so hopefully I wont have too many problems.

Anyone have any tips on who I should be using regarding the characters I mentioned? Any tips in general perhaps?

Thanks to all who help, much appreciated.

If you want to be able to zone, that completely rules out Valk and Bang, and mostly rules out Litchi (though she can do some limited poke-zoning at ‘long’ footsies range.).

Rachel probably has stronger pressure than Lambda, but Lambda zones better than Rachel. Your choice.

Alright, its going to be either Lamba, Litchi, or Rachel.

A few more little questions.

Who does the most damage out of the 3? Who is the best at rushdown out of the three? Who is the hardest to learn out of the three? Who would pay off the most out of the 3, who is the most viable character? Who has the best normals?

Lol, sorry for the barrage of questions. I just really want to be certain about my choice, and thank you for your input.

I think they’re pretty comparable in terms of damage; Litchi used to be pretty stupid, but she got toned down a bit in this release. I’d probably rank it

Rachel
Litchi
Lambda

But that’s not very objective. It’s mostly just based on my vague feeling of “how often can this character land a big damage starter” rather than anything else.

Lambda is definitely the weakest at rushdown of the three of them, but she still has some very good ways to set up an approach. (Usually sickle-storm oki, though she also has a super she can pull out to basically say “and now I get to rush you down and mix you up.”). Rachel has the shortest range normals of the three of them, but has “the pumpkin” which can often provide her with an easy in. Litchi is the most standard of the three of them, but she’s pretty freeform for all that.

I personally think Rachel is the hardest to learn, since her Sylpheed drive is kinda confusing and really not like anything in any other fighting game anywhere, so it can be tough to wrap your mind around. She’s also the only one of the three that has to play any sort of additional ‘resource management’ game (unless you count Lambda’s gravity seed meter). Litchi is probably the next most difficult to learn and play correctly, though I think her learning curve is more even than Rachel’s - Rachel is going to be really hard at first while you figure out her drive, then it gets a bit easier, whereas Litchi’s drive is more straightforward. Lambda is probably the most mechanically simple of the three, but that doesn’t really mean she takes any less skill to play effectively, since she requires a much better sense of how to control space in the arena than the other two.

All three characters have potentially strong payout and have all the tools they need to win but none are top tier either.

I can’t really judge their normals - there are too many factors, I think. If I REALLY had to guess, Litchi probably has the best, followed by Lambda, followed by Rachel, but Rachel uses her drive to improve her normals in a lot of ways, so as long as she has wind… it’s not simple.

The one other caveat I feel I should mention is that they just announced and are testing an all new BB game, and right now, it doesn’t seem like Lambda (or another character with the ‘Murakumo unit’ playstyle) is in it, which makes no sense on a lot of levels, and we’re expecting that to change… but right now, she’s not in.

Judging from my limited amount of knowledge and small playtime with each character, Bang, Valkenhayn, and Ragna feel like the 3 best rushdown characters in the entire game.

I honestly think that Bang is the best tbh with you, but then again; I have little to no idea and am merely basing that statement off of first impressions.

I don’t really want to look at tier lists until I decide indefinitely on who I am using. I have seen a few people complain about Ragna though.

I think at this point I’m going to main Litchi, I’ve had a good feeling about her since the start. Not sure how I’m going to move forward from this point, I don’t even understand combo notations for this game yet.

I really hope that she will pay off. Not sure how neutral game works in Blazblue either. This whole game is just a big blur at this current point in time, but I’ll get it eventually like always.

Thanks for the help amigo. Much appreciated.
