Y does mashing 5A/2A seem to be a viable choice for defense. its frustrating me now cause i’m used to not throwing out random shit like that. whats the best way to deal wit it cause it makes no sense how so many jumpins and whatnot get stuffed by that crap.
Start your jump-in attack earlier is the general answer, but I would need to know what character you use to give you better/more detailed advice.
First time I’ve had to post here in years… lol.
So, I’m completely new to this series and Arksys’ engine in general (coming from nearly a decade of Street Fighter). Been trying to main Lambda and Tager, with some Ragna here and there, and have been getting clowned for the last week and a half online. My biggest problems seem to be as follows:
-
I’m not sure when it’s best to tech, or even how to appropriately tech. I’ve read that you can generally just press a button just before your opponent’s next hit of his/her combo, but when I do that, all I seem to do is reset the damage so my opponent can continue to destroy me (they should send me a thank you card for the free wins).
-
I cannot tell when it is safe to counter attack after a move is blocked or even whiffed. An opponent will start a basic chain on me and I’ll block the first few hits, but just when I think it’s safe to punish him, I get stuffed even when it feels like I’ve blocked for 5+ seconds.
-
When I try and attack from the air, I always get stuffed no matter what normals I try (particularly with Ragna). What are Ragna’s best pokes (ground and air)?
Advice on some of these areas of my game are greatly appreciated. Seems like the only way I even have a semi-chance against people is just to spam Tager and it’s frustrating to me because I fancied myself a great SF player, but I’m making no progress at all in my BB tenure.
to tech press any button other than drive (A, B or C) once you have the availability to do so. But just like in street fighter there are resets, most people in the BB community call them Tech traps, where if you tech at a certain point, you will be hit by a move that is hard to counter in your new position and will be re-combo’d. Basically this just takes experience, its alot different from street fighter, so you just have to deal with being a newb all over again lol
Pressure in this game is far more rapid and nerve racking than in SF, in SF characters had a basic blockstring and that was it, in BB blockstrings can last for days, however they all have holes. Notice that your opponent likes to jump during his blockstring?(jin) use one of your anti-airs, notice your opponent uses a dash-cancel during blockstring? poke him out of it(be wary of DPs though). Generally whiffed moves can be safe if you’re not already in a position to punish, like if your in the air while they whiff a low attack, but alot of moves are quick, so they recover before you can close the distance and punish.
lol if you’re getting stuffed out of Ragna’s air attacks you must be screwing up, Ragna’s best air attack is his j.C, its range is crazy, and at max range cannot be anti-aired by most of the cast, this is why you will see jump-happy Ragna’s everywhere online, if you are getting stuffed in the air, your opponents are probably using their own anti-airs, or psychic air-grab, Ragna laughs at these feeble attacks with his j.C.
Quick question: I have a HDTV, and I want to reduce input lag. Will switching my screen settings to “C”, therefore making the game appear smaller, help reduce lag? Of course, I will also put the settings to Standard Widescreen 480p if I must.
A B C are just settings for different television sizes. For instance on small CRTs type A will make corners disappear but Type B and C will have the corners but the screen will be smaller. They won’t help with lag at all.
Your best bet is to make sure you have either a component cable or an HDMI camble, and be sure to set you system to 720p. My 360 is connected witha component cable and set to 720p and I get absolutely no lag offline, I have a 32 inch HDTV from LG, no lag problems whatsoever.
One thing I noticed about HDMI is that the sound feels a bit delayed. Does anybody else have that? People keep telling me it’s my imagination playing tricks on me, but I swear I can hear the difference when my PS3 is connected to my PC’s sound system. It’s not specific to BlazBlue, though it could be specific to my tv (LG 32LF2510, 32").
(btw, I’ve found a local store which sells imported CS! Hard to find a match with good connection unfortunately, but still, I’m happy :3 )
What does the term “gattling” mean?
It’s BlazBlue’s link system that works basically like made-up target combos; almost all chars have move(s) that can combo into an equal- or heavier-hitting move; extremely simplified, going A, B, C, D is a gatling.
If it says a character can gatling from his 2A it means you could do something like 2A, 2A, 5B, 3C, 236+X or whatever.
I’m sure there’s some factual errors in my explanation but that’s the gist of it afaik.
Just found this on the SRK wiki:
Yeah I gotta question. If both characters dual wield guns, why is Petra from Arcana Heart so much better than Noel? jk lol
Anyway, my real question is how can zone better with Rachel? I usually try to get the opponent inbetween the lighting rods. Then I can have my choice of going right or left with the wind Drive but that’s about it.
It is probably the same scenario in most fighting games, but I would like to know the relations with the use of frame data and your character’s match-ups?
As I’ve seen many videos on Youtube, I find that many players can react quickly towards certain characters attacks and I am beginning to wonder if people literally study the frame data for each individual character in order to know what to react with?
Currently I use Taokaka (so far I enjoy using her), but when I come up against Hakumen online, all my moves or whatever I do seems to be punished so easily. So I wonder if my BnB’s give me frame disadvantage.
And to finish this up, I would be grateful if anyone is willing to spend a bit of time with me on PSN to brush up some skills and strategies, I’m open to use any characters in order to find my main. Using voice chat would be preferrable.
Thanks for the time reading this!
PS: I know BBCS has the challenge mode like SF4, but I would wanna get use to CT before moving on to CS. I most definitely will end up getting CS.
Experience improves reaction time. Staring at a table of numbers does not (in general). Frame data is useful for many things, including figuring out what moves are unsafe, but knowing it won’t make you play better.
Tao’s BnBs end in knockdown, which effectively means +/-0 in Blazblue if your opponent knows how to tech. You get a free mixup if you can read their teching though (watch out for Haku 6D).
(… wait, you’re talking about CT >.>) Move on to CS; Tao’s combos are entirely different. You should practice with the most up to date version of the game
So Tao plays differently in CS? I was thinking of staying CT until I get the basic mechanics of the characters. As I haven’t really chosen a main. Tao by far is most fun for me, but I still need more exploring.
Now, does all characters in CS play differently compared to CT? I mean if so, then of course there’s no point in my practicing with CT at all and I’ll just go right ahead and buy CS.
Okay, gonna try here and DL;
More or less, maining Litchi. Have since CT, but I got some CT syndrome (man she changed quite a bit from CT to CS) going. That and in general I’m confused on when to tech etc or how to bust someone’s combo and get my own momentum going. In general looking for any help and advice for a newbie. Yeah, just started taking things seriously since 2009, but I do love the genre and the community so I’m all for upping the ante. Started with SF4 (don’t get me wrong, played fighters in the past, just not seriously etc) and now I’m on BB. So uh. Yeah. That’s also kinda disorienting haha. BB’s way more fast paced I’ve found.
the question of when to tech really depends on who you are playing against, and if they have good tech trap options. someone like tager who uses tech traps all the time makes you have to be more cautious as to when to tech but for most people its just a matter of learning their combos to some degree and when you can tech out of them (basic rule is the sooner the better as it avoids damage)
how to burst… well? thats the trick, its always a mind game. things to ALWAYS keep in mind when bursting: make sure to hit them with it as a whiffed burst is bad business for you. burst on big moves, not jabs. a lot of characters will be able to recover from the jab and block your burst, leaving you in a bad spot. sooner is better than later (in a combo). unlike CT, there is no penalty for bursting in CS so you dont need to hold onto is as much as you used to. if you know you are getting into a mondo combo go ahead and burst out of it. save yourself some HP.
how to use burst to get momentum for yourself? thats more situational. green burst is more or less a reset. get back to neutral. sometimes you can whack em into a corner with it, thats about as good as youre going to get though. if you want to burst for momentum then gold bursting is where its at. (burst when you arnt getting hit or blocking) IF they dont block it, itll pop em strait up and they wont be able to tech till they hit the ground (aka free combo)
there are times when you have the cornered and you green burst that you can get combos from, but you cant kill em off a green burst, but hey, dmg is dmg right?
did this help?
@youkai
yup, everyone is different, some more than others but the new edition is really a NEW edition. some characters can still pull off their CT combos (but teh CS combos are better) some cant even do the old CT ones anymore. either way, CS is a way superior game to CT, if youre playing BB at all, it should be CS
Ok so I more or less understand all the notation except jump cancels and dash cancel, how exactly are these done?
A jump cancel is done by inputting 7_8_9 (ub or u or uf) during the hitstun (or blockstun) of an attack. This cancels the recovery of the attack into a jump. Not all attacks can be jump-canceled, but many can.
A dash cancel is done by inputting 66 (ff) during the hit/blockstun of an attack. Only a handful of attacks can be dash-canceled, notably certain moves in Ragna and Jin’s movesets. Most characters use dash links (wait to recover, then input a dash), not dash cancels, in their combos (e.g. Lambda Throw -> (Dash) 6A
Why am I only hearing the background music?
CT (Xbox 360)
Uh, check your Audio options?
Maybe you have Voice and SE set to low volume or something.
