I also question how many games Mizo has played with blanka in AE. Not taking anything away from Poongko but that would actually help get a better idea of what this matchup should be rated.
I honestly feel like Mizo is yesterday’s news as far as blanka is concerned… it’s like saying Justin Wong is still the best in US.

If he transitioned back to the character you could learn a lot. He does a lot of things that are incredibly smart that blanka players still aren’t using years later.
so while he might be yesterday’s news, there is value in studying your history.
I watched the whole thing, 11 - 43 if I counted correctly.
My thoughts:
- I think the reason Mizoteru minimized the use of electricity in these matches is because he’s been playing with Fei Long most of the time, and he doesn’t feel comfortable execution wise. He kept going for upball in the corner and being punished for massive damage. By the middle of the set, he always saved his super to cancel it from a ball combo, acknowledging that’s pretty much the only way of coming back in this match. He had a hard time laming it out when he had the lead because Seth has better tools; his U1 got beaten always by Seth’s U2. Still, I like U1 better in this match, it’s like the only real gtfo move sometimes.
- The hp ball knockdown buff should make things a bit better in this match but don’t expect anything drastic. Maybe Mizo thinks this buff is worth returning to his old main though.
- Poongko is pretty damn good.
- This match sucks balls, don’t feel too bad if you get crushed.
- I agree with you guys, it’s a shame this set was not played with Mizo in top shape with Blanka
Yeah Blanka u1 can beat seth u2 actually, but you have to do it late. Like 3 frames after flash or something and blanka will beat seth clean.
That is a pretty long set…I didn’t watch the whole thing but where I finished…Poongko is up around 25-9…Miz didn’t play this best…a lot of missed links and punish opportunities but it’s pretty disgusting just seeing the limited options Blanka has…it just seems when Miz wins it is because he got lucky with a ultra.
Perhaps Mizo is planning a Blanka comeback in v2012? Dunno why he chose that awful colour though. Personally I think it was Daigo’s friend playing, not the great Mizoteru.
What I found most interesting is that they were playing on a 1-bar connection. I don’t get such smooth games on 3 green bars lol.
They don’t played in full green connection?
Mizo always played in this colour lol.
Imo, he plays sometimes just for the fun, not really seriously like in Vanilla, he don’t give a shit.
He’s yesterday’s news only when he doesn’t care about playing as much. Same with wong he split his time with multiple games. If he played only AE he would have done better. The guy beat mago’s sagat with rufus… that is insanity… Also wong has gotten top 16 3 years in a row for SF4… that’s pretty impressive for EVO.
Mizoteru’s foots game is so incredible that as long as he follow up with his character he’ll get back into form. The guy got to top 3 in gods garden in VANILLA… WHAT. This isn’t a situation where other blankas are passing him up, merely him not playing his character enough/or whatever. Sabin said it best that this is a situation where the player is REALLY good and not the character (when talking about blankas place on the tier list).
Nah you can see on the screen when they enter the lobby it’s a 1 bar connection.
I was just joking about the colour. I was parodying Daigo fanboys who claim it’s not him that’s playing when he loses in the console replays they see on YouTube.
I rewatch the first time he joins Mizo, and it’s a green connection, are u sure ?
Haha you’re right my bad. I was looking at the disabled mic icon in the lobby and thought it was 1 red bar lol

That blanka is pretty good.
I haven’t watched these vids yet but last vid I remember watching him was he turtles himself to death against a dhalsim, the match was so disappointing to me that back then I honestly thought it was like a 8-2 sim match up because I wasn’t as good back then… Now although I still think the match is in favor of sim I don’t think it nearly as bad and thinking about how he did nothing but block makes me feel he’s got some issue with his judgement/options.
IMO Mizo kinda defined turtle blanka that kinda worked back then when nobody really knows how to fight blanka back then when os wasn’t a common knowledge when people didn’t know how to safe jump his ex upball properly…
Today I think with everyone improving so much and blanka’s old turtle style simply doesn’t work as well anymore

2 hour set between Mizoteru and Poongko

Don’t agree. I think his turtle style for sure works. In fact it’s not used enough and that’s part of the problem. Also people (not you) think that turtle style means down back and get into the corner. When ti really means patient very very safe offense and then once you gain a lead become a wall that cannot be passed. This is how to win with blanka. Hop shenanigans are great vs certain matchups and can help you mount a small offense on wakeup. In the end i think it’s about controlling the space and refusing to give an inch. I don’t see how any character except for like maybe balrog/fei/vega can get around blankas ground mid range normals.
While I hate to generalize on one two hour video, I think its safe to say that Mizoteru has dropped out of any possible elite rankings for blanka.
Against poonkgo, Mizo provided what I consider to be the ideal evidence of shitty blanka play: Repeating the same retarded mistakes over and over and over again.
1: He would do upball like 8 times in a row, WHEN HE WAS IN THE CORNER AND AFTER POONGKO DEMONSTRATED HE COULD PUNISH UPBALL EVEN ON HIT PRETTY MUCH ANYWHERE ON THE SCREEN.
Yet, mizo kept doing it anyway.
-
When seth was almost dead, mizo would constantly just try to tick death, without having a real backup plan.
-
Seth could jump in for free, even when it wasnt a ground jump setup. Literally, seth could just jump at anytime and blanka wouldnt do shit. No jump fierce, jump back fierce, nothing.
-
Overall combo misfires, though he got some nice ones (low forward into ultra at least once), his consistency was certainly lacking.
-
Not a lot of jab elec pressure.
-
Just overall shitty play. Could have been a bad day, but really, this was some shoddy shoddy blanka work.
agree!
I think mizo could have won this set just by avoiding some reeeeaaaally stupid mistakes!
Ok perhaps I should elaborate a bit and reply to your comments.
As I was saying i don’t think true turtle style works anymore obviously i don’t mean a full pitbull style works either… i just think Blanka needs to have a balance… and take SOME risks. To me turtle style = reacting style, like you said… won’t go on offense until an obvious opportune time for ‘safe offense’… so this means… for the most part you’ll be sitting back… you will move forward when it’s ‘safe/out of range’… you’ll try to protect your space with various pokes or specials and do anti-air when necessary… whenever you’re under attack you’ll find a way to get out back to your comfortable ‘safe zone’. And finally you make your offense when safe…
The problem is…
safe offense doesn’t happen often… to me it only occurs when.
- You’re at frame advantage your opponent doesn’t have a move that can stop your offense… like Chun-Li no meters/revenge… and she just blocked your s.MP…
- You’re doing a mixup during a huge block stun like after j.HK
- You’re doing a block string
- you’re doing a safe jump
Punishing or reacting to fireballs imo are all defense which is obviously part of what a good turtler should do.
What I do with Blanka now is… i try to not get myself pushed into the corner while playing defensively for most parts… My goal for Blanka is to try to gain as much ground as possible and not lose ground… meaning… i don’t have charge most of the time… and honestly… besides from upball… which only needs down charge… i pretty much regret 90% of the time whenever i try using horizontal ball as a defensive tool. As for rainbow… i can easily get my charge back simply from blocking correctly…
I will take some risks (sometimes) in order to make sure i don’t lose ground and try to gain more by provoking them … either by
- stepping in and out of range… footsies.
- jumping in when i gain only some frame advantage…
- LP balling/safe ball/whiff ball to test their reaction and depending on how fast they react and how good they punish i might either continue doing this, switch up the speed/range of the balls, or stop trying to do this at all if the risk is wayyy too high.
- hop in or out… in if i wanna create offense… out might be because i wanna go back to a safe distance after a blockstring.
- focus/neutral jump baiting.
Once again… there are time and place for turtle style Blanka especially with certain match ups it’s nearly necessary but for most parts, that shouldn’t be The Blanka Stlye… which i remember back then that’s what a lot of Blanka players will say and play…
