Bison - Small Run Down by Higher-Jin

Hope none of these are that useless but here goes a overview I recently released at www.newchallenger.net in his encyclopedia he also referred to him as Vega thus I had to refer to it the same. Also some of these things are to help beginners so keep that in mind.

===Bread and Butter Comboes:===

  1. Psycho Crusher Air Combo

launch > (super jump) j. lk, j. mp, j. mk, lk scissor kick xxx psycho crusher (mashable)

Total Damage: 81

But is DHCable to Sent HSF for around 135 damage (this includes the launch however), you dhc after the very last hit and when you do dhc into sent you can usually launch after the HSF is completed. You can of course get even more damage if you are near the corner since you can end it with sent’s corner combo which leads into the unblockable.

  1. Scissor Kick Nightmare:

(close) c. lk , standing hk (2 hits) xxx scissor kick nightmare

total damage: 52

(close) c. lk, standing HP xxx scissor kick nightmare

(but if you do this you might aswell launch for alot more damage)

total damage: 59

IMPORTANT: Never ever do this combo on a crouching storm EVER if you want to know why just do it yourself, the last part of it will go over her leaving you in a position to get hit by a free combo. Overall stay away from this combo but if you insist on doing it I just wanted to point out the above unless you can’t reach with anything else after a jump in and want to do standing rh (far) xxx scissor kick nightmare.

===Important Notes:===

Teleport (DP+p): It does NOT seem to be instant start up, I think it has a few frames of vulnerability before you are invincible and teleport, test it out before you start using it in reversal situations (AHVB comes to mind) It is still very useful however and it is pretty fast although not instant in getting into it’s invincibility frames.

Launch: Very very small range, it is extremely hard to do a jump in then a crouching lk, launch. It is sometimes better for you to go for the walk foward > launch instead or you can settle for alot less damage and just do standing hk xxx scissor kick nightmare.

Hyper Orb (hcb+pp): I don’t think there is a way to combo this without a assist but when you do combo it in the corner you can do a semi-infinite just doing the orb over and over again although it isn’t really worth it.

Air Psycho Crusher: In the corner after a air combo ending in this (I’d suggest you do magic series psycho crusher instead of scissor kick xxx psycho crusher so the second psycho crusher is easier to combo) you can do j. lk xxx psycho crusher afterwards although the damage isn’t really worth it IMO.

Ground Psycho Crusher: Way too much start up. It cannot be mashed (or is very very hard to mash). It does the same ammount of damage as a unmashed air Psychor Crusher.

Snapback: Although it is based on a 2 hit normal (standing rh) it’s only one hit. I’m unsure if it’s safe on block up close since after the first hit because all the hitting frames of the second hit are gone but on the bright side it can OTG (must be laying on their back though) although it isn’t that useful since it’s escapable.

===Tricks of the Trade:===

Experiment with these before you use them and I am no way saying you MUST use them either if you don’t like using them then don’t.

  1. Drones/Laggy Assist + Teleport: This will cross up if Vega is on the opposite side I suggest the teleport that has you right behind them and above them as you can attack on the way down. Sometimes it’s easier to go for a standing hk into scissor kick nightmare instead of a c. lk, launch or plain launch after a jump in because of his bad range.

Variation 1: Super Jump, at some point go into flight mode call sent and teleport

Variation 2: Teleport but instead of going on the other side teleport to the same side and do a orb.

  1. Inescapable Orb: Do a HP orb (hcb+p) if they attack you and you are able to block push block them and they will get hit by the orb they just tried to escape from since it explodes on the other side of the screen. Viscant a well known Vega/Low Tier player came up with this.

  2. Cross up Psycho Crusher: Do a devils reverse then do a psycho crusher when you reach the other side of them. Too slow? or is it? You see the psycho crusher up close has the same property as Storm’s lightning storm which means when it’s close enough and they aren’t blocking they won’t be able to block it after the superflash. Here is the tricky part: they can be blocking the entire time but if they don’t switch which way they are blocking by the time you cross them up and do the super they won’t be able to block in the correct direction. Of course I think it’s better to have a safe super to back you up in case you fail but I also think bison does get to block alot sooner in his air version of the psycho crusher and it’s kind of hard to punish overall. (Important: REMEMBER TO MASH!)

  3. Double Assist: Vega’s Orb assist is really good because Vega leaves before the orb actually explodes… what this means is you can call another assist while the opponent is still in block stun from the Vega orb assist.

  4. Guard Break: Hp Fireball (hcf+p) xxx hcb+pp super (This works best on the opposite side of the screen or close to it, it also seems to work midscreen)

  5. Risky way to get in: On the opposite of the screen, devils reverse (Ch d, u + p) + drones he’ll jump a ridiculous distance and you can cancel anytime to the devils reverse. This isnt’ too useful but it’s a rather cool suprise tactic and it can help you get in.

  6. Instant Devils Reverse - Some may not know this but in order to make the devils reverse come out as quickly as possible hold down the punch button when you do it but you may not get as much “hang time” off of it this way. It’s also important to note that the head stomp is NOT a overhead while the diving fist portion is as is the devil’s reverse (same animation).

===Stats:===

Stamina: He takes 100% damage which is the same as Cable and overall pretty good.

Note worthy normals: Jumping Rh (8 frames), c. lp (2 frames), c. lk (3 frames)

Note worthy specials: Nearly all of them have some kind of use he has a very good special move set however the ones that stand out are: the orb, the teleport, and the fireballs are pretty useful aswell sometimes.

Note worthy supers: All of them have uses but it’s important to note that the hyper orb seems pretty safe and does VERY GOOD chip damage, it even does 3 chip damage on the very last hit. Comboing into the Psycho Crusher gives you the most damage yet IMO Scissor Kick Nightmare has it’s uses aswell.

Sprite: Vega is a short character but also a “fat one” even fatter than doom most likelyand is probably one of the fattest characters in the game. Fat characters tend to have easier times being crossed up but don’t worry too much about it, it does however mean he has more probelms with rush down so keep that in mind.

Gameplay: He really is mixed, he has really high damage comboes yet some of the best trapping tools in the game. He has ALOT of specials and alot of good normals, hypers, and supers but he also has downsides to them. Compared to other low tiers: Above Average IMO I hope you enjoyed my small rundown, till we meet again.

edit: Want to see some really retarded hang time?

Do the orb super(connect) then do the devils reverse right after.

The layout of the FAQ was great, very usefull. Thanks.

I’ve been mesing with him lately …can we get some big 4 matchup’s Cable and Magneto I can actually get something going.

Solid Blocking with drones against mags and teleporting in on cable and crossing him up seem to be ok. But Sentinel and Storm give me MAJOR problems especially Sent/Cap any advice on these would be nice.

Didn’t he used to do a lockdonw? I can’t even get it going with doom. My most reliable team is Bison/sent/Cyke and even then the strategy is land his BB into HSF and get him the heck out! I got some stuff with him though.

1.c.lk ( drones) c.lk, c.hk if they don’t roll at teh very end of the c.hk do up and hk and he will stomp on the back end of there knee for a nift lil cross up which can be canceled into psychocrusher into another super.

2.c.lk ( drones) c.hp, scissor kick under them at the last second and the drones will reset them then launch them.

3.c.lk ( drones ) c.hp sj. hp xx hk scissor kick, ( the scissor kick will bring them down into the drones then cancel into his psychocrusher super, does about 90 damage and can be canceld into something else if sent isn’t in second position.

  1. for the unsuspecting big four player, call cyke on a incoming character and do his HCB super for a easy mid screen guard break
into his semi infnite or whatever u want really because they end up in the corner.

  2. Ok Cyke on point lol this one is really hard for me for some reason
c.lk,s.hk,s.hk + Bison variety, xx lp.optic blastxx super optic blast,
( Now as soon as the super optic blast ends bison should be hitting giving you enough time to do a cyclone kick into another super, corner only by the way.

Now this one hasnt worked for me yet but im sure its only because i didn’t put much time into it

nearly full screen dash forward call bison dash back lp.optic blast xx super optic blast, bison hits as super ends and you should beable to do another lp.optic blast into super optic blast but i havent gotten it to work as simple as it looks :frowning:

Theres more but nothing is really practical yet :frowning: suggestions are definately welocme seeing how i’ve been messing with Bison for 2 days
:frowning:

Here’s somes trick with doom
Tricks

– c.lk+assist,c.mk xx instant.Skull Driver -
Nice against turtles… because the Skull Driver, can’t be crouch blocked (only in the air and standing)
caution because if you fall TOO near of the enemy with a good range of throw you can be throwed before the rocks hits the enemy.

– c.lk+assist,c.mk xx Teleport (up/behind of the enemy) > Skull Driver o j.HP -
You can repeat this one… but the enemy make a superjump , and is safe

– c.lk+assist,c.hk : variable
If the oponent DONT block :
1: HK.Knee-Press xx Psycho Crusher -
2: HK.Knee-Press > SJ > sj.lk,sj.mk xx Psycho Crusher -
If the oponent block :
1 : Teleport (up/behind of the enemy)
2 : Fly > HK.Knee-Press o Fly > Skull Driver

– J.Hk + Assist xx Teleport (behind) or j.HK.Knee-Press -
The J.hk have a good range… and when you fall , you are behind of the enemy… an you can do the next things…

  • c.lk,c.hk , HK.Knee-Press xx Psycho Crusher
  • LP.Psycho Field xx Psycho Explosion
  • Skull Driver
Is a little dangerous but is nice
But don’t make it against a Juggernaut. Is too fat… and because that, you fall too close of him and that is a 100% throw…

Thats tricks works more safe with Strom than DooM… there is some with Storm Projectil Assist

Storm (projectile assist)
– c.lk+assist,c.hk xx “Variable” -

If the opponent DON`t block :
1-LP.Psycho Field xx Psycho Explosion (73 dmg points)
2-Skull Driver xx Psycho Crusher (71 dmg points)
Nice damage… an you can make DHC’s to Hail Storm for more damage

If the opponent Blocks :
1- HP.Psycho Field > HK.Knee-Press > [c.lk+assist,c.mk,c.hk xx HP.Psycho Field > HK.Knee-Press] (Repeat brackets)
2- Skull Driver o HP.Psycho Shot

Well… be careful with the first one… dont works in the corner, and be careful with the push blocks in the crouching kicks… (you most cancel very quickly the c.hk in Hp.Psycho Explosion
The second is more simple. Is overhead an the opponent most block it standin or in ther air
and the HP.Psycho Shot is for prevent jumps

2-- c.lk+assist,c.mk,c.hk xx HP.Psycho Field > Teleport up/behind ( or HP.Psycho Field > jump > Hk.knee-press) -

With this you have a Psycho Field ready to explode in the screen, and you can make a Teleport or the other one (Jump > Hk.knee-press)…
And if not block … cancel quickly the HP.Psycho Field in Psycho Explosion

Some Tips

-The crouch animation of M.Bison is too small … you can evade Lighting Attacks,Cable’s S.Hp,T.Bonne’s Pistol Grab and Uni Beams an another things!

-With Storm… when you make a DHC (Psycho cruhser to hail storm) make it when M.Bison finish the psycho crusher. So you when Storm make the Hail storm, the enemy fall near of you… soo near that you can do a ad/df.lk>land> s.hk >sj> magic series xx lighting attack x2 xx Lightin Storm
and make nice damage :stuck_out_tongue: but is a little harder…

yea whats the best way to play with bison and juggy cuz ive been using them and getting that high damaging comob off with them but the only problem is that im having trouble trapping them what is the best way for me to trap with them with juggys dash assist and bisons variety?

use juggy’s ground assist… Its not 1 hit like his dash assist, its like 5-6 hits, so it locks em down… you can do some long ground combos with that assist and u can try to do traps… yeah bison’s variety assist is good (just make sure the other guy doesnt get a chance to hit bison before he throws out the purple ball) its good cuz u can call out bison again while the purple ball is already on the screen. it just takes a little while before he throws out the ball.

The variety assist… is good with Cable…
s.hp(5 shots)+Bison variety , Hyper Beam… when you finish the Hyper beam the Psycho ball will explode…
And with Doom you can call Bison Varietty + J.hk xx Photon arrai…

The variety assist is pretty good for ground control :stuck_out_tongue:

The best way to do a chippdamage with doom and bison is using Bison variety, and with storm or magneto is the something when the oponent is defending and you wanna punish…but you have to control the time or you will be punished…

Good Bison,

Thank Insomniac487 for that

hm…sry but the Bison do only the basic…

great combos & strageties people! keep them posting. He’s a underrated character, seriously. One thing i tend to always do is his scissor kick nightmare special DHC into proton cannon… now thats what you call MASSIVE damage :wgrin:

i didn’t make the video. I thought i’d spread the word cause I thought it was a really good match involving Dhalsim/bison. I posted the link in a few dhalsim topics on SRK, including magnetro’s Dhalsim-DVD-tutorial-guide topic. I mainly suggested it cause of dhalsim. His partner bison on expansion is AMAZING though… as a pair, they really lockdown people well

Bison in that vid only plays for less then a minute. He’s OK, not great. There’s only ONE bison video on youtube, and it’s a match video… it sucks though, not even worth watching. I’m pretty sure you can find bison matches on preppy’s site though. Also theres a bison tutorial video out there if you haven’t seen it which you can also find on preppy’s site. It’s titled “Psycho madness” i think. It’s awesome, get it people if you haven’t already

man…the bison in this video is a shit…serious…I dont have a video of my bison or my master bison but I know that bison dont do nothing…

So…any videos of any other bison players yet =\

lklk + warmachine aa assist in the corner = semi infinite with the ballsuper.

Kanu vs MDR was a pretty damn good match. Gotta love how Dhalism jumps away from Strider’s Ouroboros and just teleports to safety. I would have relished seeing MDR’s face.

Bison was used to good effect in assist combos and I like the DHC to Bison at the end. I haven’t seen a movie where MDR really gets a large amount of screen time with his Bison, though.

As much as i love Bison i tottally disagree with Higher-Jin’s ranking of him above character’s like Charlie & Jill.

Bison is one of those awkward-as-hell characters, that can APPEAR good on paper, but in execution you find that he is really lacking. He may have a lot of moves but they’re all awkward with considerable DRAWBACKS. In the end he is what i like to call a “preference” character, meaning that the ONLY reason anyone would EVER want to play him and put work into it, is because they like the character and want to make him succeed(like me).

He is also one of those characters that absolutly NEEDS a good assist to function decent. Unlike characters like Charlie or Jill that can kickass by themselves if they have too, Bison by himself is DEAD in the water.

Many times i’ve had my team destroyed and made a comeback to win with just Charlie for example. With Bison however…sigh might as well walk away from the machine if he is my last remaining character.

Overall, Bison appears good on paper but in reality, has no business whatsoever being ranked above the likes of Charlie, Guile, and Jill.

~TG, end rant

Edit: also Bison orbs, especially his orb assist, while neat they are no where near as useful as Higher-Jin makes them sound. The Orb is actually his WORST assist and useless against any mildly aggressive player.

I pretty much agree with you TrueGrave. Bison is a good character, but you only get to see him do his thing in 2 situations mostly:

  1. when he is paired with an assist that opens his game up in either blockstring into ‘orb’ patterns, teleport cross-ups, general tron/mando/cyc stuff, etc.

  2. when he is just played patiently by someone who is familiar with what he can do and is comfortable using him in various situations

Bison is, plain and simple, not able to lay on the kind of forward pressure that faster, dash behind projectile, quicker recovery on teleport kind of characters can. I still think he has good uses/applications on certain teams.

Also, his ‘orb’ (B) assist continues to make me think it has yet to be really understood as far as how effective it could be. The most I have gotten out of it was paired w/ Strider, Sent, Storm, Blackheart, and/or Cable thus far.

DHC-wise, any major DHC from his launch, sj.lk, sj.mk xx hk knee press xx qcf+PP is deadly. I like doing this into Sent’s HSF…nasty damage with launch ff + Mando possibilities afterwards.

Some promising Bison teams I have had experience with:

Bison/Sentinel/anti-air
Bison/Storm/Cable
Bison/Sentinel/Strider-variety (be very careful with this team…random stuff does not happen with this crew, you have to know what to do and when to apply Bison B and Strider-B assists effectively)
Bison/Ironman/Doom

Pfftt…Screw that, judge, I’m using Team Kanu (Bison, Sim and Hulk). Certainly a difficult team to use, but I’m ready to put in the work. One of the advantages I see from the outset is that both Sim and Hulk can help Bison control space wonderully. He’s got his own little Shadowloo thing gong there. In term of team chemistry, its difficult and practice heavy but I think I’ll make it work.

The orb is his worst assist simply because: Its SLOW as all hell, puts him out there as a BIG target, and all it takes is 1 little poke to stop the orb!! Against a fairly aggressive player who is constantly pushing forward, it is just useless and he’ll rarely get to pull one off.

And so what if he leaves before it explodes? You’ve got maybe a fraction of a second before that happens. No big window of opportunity there at all. Again Higher-Jin makes it sound a lot more useful on paper than it actually is in reality. Making me wonder if he ever spent consistent time with the character at all, but just did a quick examination of him for the sake of this thread and that was it(No offense to Higher-Jin BTW).

His most useful assist is the scisser kick. It comes out pretty Fast, knocks down on connect and ok recovery. 2nd would be his projectile Orb, which is mostly for distractions unless your against an enemy that takes to the air alot.

My bison team when i do play him now:
Charlie(or Ryu)/Bison/Storm.

Storm’s projectile assist is excellent and helps not just bison but my other characters. I like to start Storm assist, then immediately HK-teleport behind the character, if projectile hits from behind then that gives me enough of time to prepare for a launch into a Psychocrusher air combo. If not, then i can either go back on the defensive or throw something out there while they’re still blocking for some quick chip damage like a Super Orb.

That may sound wasteful, but with bison you NEED every damn thing you can get.

Other noteworthy assists for Bison is Akuma Expansion, Doom Rocks, Zangief AA, Sent Drones, and Commando AA. However i pick storm most of the time because she is the only God-tier i consistently play as, and helps out everyone pretty well.
