Birdie General Thread: The Banana Bogey Brawler

Birdie is definitely better this season. He has some match up trouble with Guile, Urien, and Cammy but they can be over come if the Birdie player is patient.

yea he is definitely better this season, guile match up isnt as bad as it was before because of ex bullhorn buff…i think laura is my biggest problem…but im starting to think that the match up isn’t as bad as i always thought it was. Urien is insane though…

People were crying about Birdie changes at first, then I saw the s.MP and EX bullhead buffs and was like LUUUULZ. They basically buffed Mena since he whiff punishes like a champ with s.MP already.

I think this match up is slightly in birdie’s favor (5.5-4.5 in s1 i think it was 6-4) because her neutral game is horrible compare to us. basically you can stay at midrange, playing footsie and beat almost everything she has, she is forced to do something risky to get in like a raw overhead, prepmtly s.hk, c.hp or dash/jump. if she accomplish that you are in trouble she can run a train on you and finish the match in a blink with resets, command grabs and frame traps.

when you are in defense it is very important just block and only jump or do something if you are sure your guess is correct, remember her set up is better after a ex command grab or a vt command grab so juts block or v.reversal out (her elbow or ex fireball).

another thing is remember her normal fireball is punishable at different ranges, fullscreen you can react with a ex bull revenger, mid far range use your cf.hp and in close and mid close range use your bullhorn, if you aren’t aware of that she is going to extend her offense or get in for free, but if you are able to react every normal fireball is a opportunity to turn the tables.

when you are in offense, be careful with your meaty timing and your command grabs, she is free on wake up but laura player tend to s.mash her 3 frame s.jab or jump back dash out of pressure so sometimes is better just let her wake up, remember than any chaotic situation favor laura, specially if she has a full v.trigger bar.

last thing is remember don’t use your CA in the beginning of the round, people tend to underestimate her v.trigger, in this match up your life lead means almost nothing if she touch you with v.trigger, it’s much better use a ex bull head/ex chain and keep the rest of the meter and use the CA if your are going to kill, remember if you get a ex bullhead you have a free can set up (if she is not cornered) so you keep the momentum after anyway.

Laura got easier to handle as I became more patient, played footsies and just normal grabbed her on wake up.
If she neutral jumps just anti air her after the failed grab.
The only thing I have an issue is the knee spamming. Can’t punish it for some reason so I just block or Vreversal.

stLP or crLP will stop the next knee everytime

What’s the most frustrating part about playing with birdie?

No real wakeup unless Vtrigger and meter is my biggest challenge. But other than that no complaints

the most frustrating part about playing birdie is that you can’t booger flick on command

when some birdie players saying the character is terrible, lol.

seriously the most frustrating part is thinking strategy/techniques because the character is to simple, is hard to be creative and do something profound with him.

Yea i wish he had a few crazy mix ups like most of the other characters.

Hello everyone~
It’s been a LONG time since I’ve last since posted on SRK in general, so sorry for anything in advanced.

Picked up Birdie since S1 since to me his kit was the one that suited me the most. Very methodical and had a great AA in terms of c.mp. (I mained Sakura in SFIV, so c.mp = SFIV Sak’s .HP to me haha~)
Since my work prevented me in playing long sessions online, I’ve just recently hit the Platinum Ranks in S2.

In any case, I hope to share whatever I come across for Birdie here.

CFN: Sakabato
Region: Aomori Prefecture, Japan

To start things off though, I like to discuss his MUs in S2. These are my personal take and let me know if you feel differently about a MU since the only SFV I can get is though online and no offline play.

Bad MUs:
Guile(7/3), Urien(6.75/3.5), Necalli(6.75/3.5), Chun(6.75/3.5), Laura(6.75/3.25), Dictator(6.75/3.25)

Slightly Bad MUs:
Rashid(6/4), Claw(6/4), Boxer(6/4), Sim(6.5/3.5), Cammy(6.5/3.5), FANG (6.25/3.75), Ibuki(6.25/3.75)

Even:
Karin(5.5/4.5), Ken(5.5/4.5), Gouki(5/5), Ryu(5/5), Alex (5/5), Juri(5/5), Nash(4.5/5.5)

Slightly good MUs:
Gief(4/6), Mika (4/6)

Overall, I feel like Birdie struggles against lot of the cast. Without a good reversal option outside V-Reversal and EX Charged Headbutt, or in VT EX Headbutt, his defenses are weak. He has really good neutral tools, and a decent rush-down game, but in a game that is not built for the neutral as much as other SFs were IMO, he doesn’t have the leniency that the other characters have in this game.

My personal weaknesses MU-wise are:
#1 - Dictator: SOO MANNY PLLUSSS FRAME NOOORMMALLLSSS!!! I’ve lost to so many Dictators, that I just find it frustrating that they can simply press 1 button (s.hk), multiple times in my face, whiffed or blocked, and everything goes to hell from there if you eat one. That and I have a real hard time AA’ing EX stomp. All the rest of the stomps I can AA perfectly fine, EX stomp is a nightmare for me.

#2 - Necalli: V-skill hits Birdie due to his bigger hitbox, which in turn, grants Necalli V Trigger a lot faster than if I were to play any other character in the cast. That and I still hate s.lp as an AA, especially from this character.

#3 - Cammy: More of an annoyance if anything. Once she gets a knock down, it’s hard to get her off your back. That and you can’t jump at her at all during the match since b.mp AAs any options you have.

i think he goes even with pretty much everyone in the cast except urien guile and laura (laura is more of a personal problem though) guile being the worst match up at lke 6-4 and urien being 5.5-4.5

I feel like birdie fared well in season 2. He was solid in season 1 and hes just as solid now, if not a bit better. Definitely don’t think he loses any matches 3-7, Id agree that his worst match is guile and that’s 4-6. I think Birdie goes even with most of the cast, and i think some of his tougher matchups are better in season 2. Ryu mu is better, Nash mu is better, Chun mu is way better (thank god for her v-trigger nerf), and none of his matchups really got that much worse. Maybe Laura and Rashid got worse?

Also has anyone talked about how great cr.lp is yet? I fucking love that move.

The bottom line is when Birdie gets knocked down he has zero options without V. He dies to meaties more than anyone and because of the “fake” footsies I like to call them and hitboxes / hurtboxes that don’t make sense whiff punishing is better in this game but as noted before, neutral is not a thing. I think he has “ok” matchups, but make no mistake, if Fang is the worst character in the game and Birdie loses to Fang, well…that should tell you. The +3 mixups up close with Fierce or Roundhouse don’t exist like they do with Mika/Gief/ALex. I’ve played him enough to get to Super(?) Ultra(?) Platinum and the stuff they took away does not outdo the fact that the engine still glorifies frame data. I honestly feel like I am playing Tekken when I play this game.

Agreed. I’ve been saying this for along time. Shit is whack.

And holy crap, Jason Wilson sighting!

new patch coming in march…hopfuly birdie gets another pass for more improvements…though i think save ex bullhead is getting nerfed.

Let’s hope not. Balrog can be plus from his ex dash punch, but Birdie getting nerfed? I think they’ve already done quite a bit to him. Personally I think they will should add the invincibility back on EX Bull Horn but who knows. The bottom line is we’re dealing with Hakan here and seriously nerfed neutral Stand MKs (cast wise) to make anything not “plus” not as efficient to work with. I don’t think I even use stand MK anymore. Stand MP + 1 is such a great tool there isn’t a reason to.

You mean add armor frame 1 like in season 1?

I’d rather they just make bullhorn throw invincible.

like honestly for him i would like jab combos back and faster chains to deal with fireballs…maybe safe overhead or combo able over head?
