At what point did you (and by “you” I mean anybody) think that having people singing about drug abuse, killing people, raping women (and men, and…Poor Poochie. :sad: ), and general disrespect of innocent people was a GOOD thing? “Warning: Parental advisory. at worst, you could make an argument that gangsta rap is a symptom of impoverished communities. however the reality is that it’s just entertainment and nobody starts gangbanging, doing drugs, etc… because of music in the absence of other significant societal factors. considering that back in the 70’s and 80’s things were significantly worse and there was no gangsta rap, that the largest consumers of gangsta rap are suburban white kids and that we’re talking about bill o’reilly who is on the record as being scared of black people for logic deficient reasons, i’d say it’s better off to not give a shit about bill o’reilly’s ridiculous “opinions”.

I’m very wary of people using the argument “You must address X before you can really help Y population”.

Often this can set up a situation where Y population never really gets what they need because of the difficulties with X. X might be mired in ethical quandaries, or it might be ambiguously defined and thus difficult to ever really know if we’re making progress.

Saying rap musicians are the primary cause of delinquency in adolescents seems to fall in line with a myriad of other historical examples that were ‘destroying our youth’ (see also rock n’ roll, videogames, etc). Rap music exists in a lot of countries with crime, drop out, and teen pregnancy rates far lower than the US.

In fact across numerous studies those problems seem to be most highly correlated with SES (socioeconomic status) disparity. In other words, countries where there’s a wider margin between the rich and poor tend to have more problems. And guess which country happens to have the widest margin. Hmm…and I wonder why the right doesn’t want to talk about that.

Anyway, that short documentary just on that guy’s book, The Tanning of America on VH1 the other day, Diddy and Obama connections. Part of the reason he was voted into office, sure, “He’ll never admit it, but he was born out of hip-hop, helping him get into office” Diddy back there in 2004 interviewing him, suggesting he go into running for president, VOTE OR DIE t-shirt for MTV at the Dem.Convention.

Bill Clinton’s direct jab at Obama about something resulted in “Where I come from, if people give you that kind of treatment, go and brush your shoulders off!”

So Obama won’t be down, where rap is about skinny jeans swaggy p-nuts 90’s baby retro now anyway. What would be something to lookout for would be the “reverse racism” coming back. When it is more of a poor issue. Stadiums getting public funds vs schools. Poverty doesn’t care what color you are. Hiring issues, “see a Jamal/other names, he doesn’t get a callback vs others.”
