Gotta say, I’m glad that I decided to make arcade sticks my new hobby… Having something to tinker with while I’m being poked and prodded is a boon. Especially with the fact that needles make me scream like a girl and/or punch nurses…

Asked this question over in the Q & A thread if anyone here want’s to tackle it.

What does everyone think of the the newly announced Steam Controller?

I think it going to suck, and I think its an ugly techno owl.

I don’t see how the gamepad going to feel comfortable.

Dat button placement. I can’t see how it could be comfortable. I’m willing to give it a chance, but…

I just put in an order for parts to make a Bluetooth SNES controller, then I realized that I’m at my apartment, and

Time to visit home, methinks. Speaking of, does anyone have a source for multi-colored button replacements?

Valve has been hiring engineers for this controller for a few years now, I’m positive that they have gone through the necessities in getting a pretty decent prototype out. Once they get a comfortable shape selected, the rest of the control seems like it’s still waiting to be finalized. I think their use of haptic feedback is going to be quite clever, and though people are complaining now about the face buttons, I think we’ll be seeing a lot of software customizability that we don’t currently see with the controls of this console gen.

My opinion is that the control will be surprisingly good, but the format will be too unique for anyone but Valve to take seriously. I look forward to the point where we move beyond dual analog stick controller designs, whatever that may look like.

It’ll be shit for fighting games though.

With most games on steam, face buttons aren’t really necessary, and the shoulder buttons should be able to perform most normal tasks. I think it will be pretty bad for fighting games, but the Steam Machine is intended to be fully hackable, so there’s nothing wrong with hacking in some xbox controller drivers(and PS3 should be native in linux) and plugging in your fightstick.

I’m not totally sold on Valve’s controller, but I’m very intrigued, enough to the point that I’ll be buying one on release to see what I think.

I kinda want one so that I can re-purpose the touch rings for creative applications…

My experience is that Computer Engineers are fucking retarded. Only a Computer Engineer would put a speaker next to a hard drive so that system notification beep would crash the system, their solution reduce the volume of the beeps(and not move the fricking speaker). Bonus points if you can gets the system prototype that had this issue.

There a reason technicians hate engineers. Engineers make tasks for the technicians harder and more convoluted for the sake of “progress”.

I would say that’s true, about many “Computer Engineers”.

However, I do know many Electrical Engineers and Practical Engineers that are very sensible and intelligent. A few Computer Engineers I know are that way too.

A true Engineer should understand the relevance and limitations of every part they are going to use, not just weather or not it’ll turn on.

Electrical and mechanical engineers are amazing, though.

This control is in beta, I’m assuming this is so they could find most critical issues during the beta period. On that note, to call Computer Engineers retarded shows a great bit of disservice to the engineers that made your forum post possible. The beep volume fix probably saved those engineers a few million dollars, so it makes a lot of sense for them to reduce the beep volume instead of moving the speaker. This control is pretty much Valve’s one shot at going all in on the gaming/living room market, and Valve has very high standards. On your other point, you “don’t see how the gamepad is going to feel comfortable”? I think it’s very difficult to judge how comfortable this will be, based on one or two pictures. Do you think the control is really that uncomfortable, and Valve’s engineers were just like “Eh, maybe they won’t notice?” Most of the early reviews of the beta have been acceptable to positive, and I think there’s going to be quite a few more iterations before you even see the control again, let alone touch one for yourself. Techno owl or not, Valve tends to make great things, and I’m very excited for what they bring out.

@D3v
In regards to fighting games, the control itself will probably control similarly to the 3DS’s circle pad, which wasn’t ideal for fighting games either. I won’t deny that at all. However, you already own controls with which to play fighting games, and Valve isn’t forcing you to use their control for fighting games (or racing games), or any others for that matter. Why not just use your own controls, which have already suited to your preferences? I don’t recall you making this argument for the PS4 control or the Xbone control. Do you really expect them to cater to your niche genre needs, even when the FGC has already established this mentality of “Joystick or GTFO”?

So, I have been hearing rumors that Sanwa’s production plant is placed in China. Apparently, this certain production plant is a subsidiary of Suzo, the same company who’s obviously been producing Happ parts since mid 2000’s.

I can kind of see why Sanwa would resort to Chinese mass productions, especially with the arcade stick boom of 2009, but is this true? I have searched high and low for Sanwa’s production facility in Japan, and nothing has come up.

Is there anybody here with insider information on Sanwa?

They did check for a penis beforehand, right?

i thought that was in Thailand?

I dunno, but I’d be happy to do so for you.

My experience is that people are fucking retarded.
If you’re going to go for stupid generalizations why not go for the really broad ones?

Principled technician:

Engineers are not out to get technicians, they’re out to make what people want.

Neat, the FS VX/V3 is back!
