I started playing the game in February of this year and being new to fighting games I have always used a controller to play. I picked up Bison because my original favorite character (Zangief) was way too frustrating as a newbie for me to get used to, given that most of the online warriors I face are fireball spamming shotos. With Bison I felt that a controller was more conducive to my playstyle. I have plodded along getting only moderately better over the past few months.
When I attended the 25th anniversary tournament in LA a couple weeks ago, I decided to finally spring for one of the Street Fighter X Tekken sticks which all my friends said was an incredible stick. I have played the past few weeks and I feel I am now approaching my previous level of comfort.
However I still have a lot of kinks which are hampering me. I have always been more of a defensive Bison but the problem is I don’t do defense well ROFL. First off, I seem to be married to the down back ‘pro’ technique, and I’m not sure if it’s lag or I’m just slow, but I always seem to get kicked in the head on direct jump ins. Sometimes it seems like I am still crouching when I get hit but I know I have risen with plenty of time. This gives rise to another grave error of mine- that’s failure to properly anti air or dash. I feel like dashing is ten times harder on a stick, particularly from the 1P position facing to the right. I always miss my ultra inputs and I teleport instead. I also can’t seem to understand or master the concept of the focus attack. I never use it properly and when I do land it, I am so surprised by the success that I have no idea how to punish it.
Anyways, the point of my post is really this: A) Am I just bad? B) Am I not spending enough time working out the ‘kinks’ in training mode. C)Have I just not had enough time getting used to a fight stick. D) Am I just a little ‘slower’ than everyone else E) Am I not paying attention enough to my opponents and thus not reacting well enough on that basis. F) All of the above.
Maybe someone who has played me in the past two weeks or so can shed some light on this since I have no idea how to upload matches onto Youtube or anything. Thank you for your time.
It’s F. It seems like you have a combination of problems, ranging from not being 100% comfortable on your fight stick, to not properly paying attention to your opponent’s movements, which is why you’re getting kicked in the head when they jump towards you. It’s extremely important to learn when you should stop holding “down back” while you’re on the ground, because while this does give you the option of utilizing your special moves, it keeps you stationary, which makes you can easy target in the zoning or footsies game. It’s also important to learn Bison’s options when it comes to anti-airing your opponent’s jump attacks, especially since he doesn’t have a single defensive option to use.
