If you jump and don’t press a button, you can EX SBK to avoid or beat breathless when you land … you might as well try it, but the risk/reward is so bad in that situation for Chun Li. You can also do the same thing if Abel does breathless on wakeup and you happened to stick out a cancelable meaty like cr. mk–EX SBK will avoid it.
Breathless isn’t completely broken, but it can be super hard to deal with.
Actually Chun has one of the best set of options vs Abel U2, but not for the reasons extravagant listed.
If you are in the air when he does it, and are able to hit him: stomp. You’ll bounce over him.
If you are in the air and not able to hit him, cancel landing frames with EX hasanshu.
If you are in the range where EX hasanshu won’t go over him, but you can still get it by the ultra, it’s a simple 50/50.
50% chance he waits for you to do the EX hasanshu, absorbs it and rushes you.
50% chance he does it instantly to catch your jump landing recovery frames, and you EX hasanshu out.
Well good, I didn’t practice it in training mode with only mid screen. I tested it right in front of his face.
I did a neutral jump and had Abel do u2 when I was right in front of him. I spammed backdash and she didnt get hit, because I already knew a player would try to go for your recovery frames of the dash so I doubled dashed or triple dashed and it wasn’t able to land.
Go check in training mode and see for yourself.
Magneto we should play sometime.
edit: I did some more training to see if I was correct. My point is invalid if the Abel player will know you are going to Dash 100% of the time. Otherwise, in most cases, if you are in the air and he’s waiting to strike you with Breathless, you can always dash RIGHT when you hit the ground. (or buffer the dash before you even touch the ground) And I did this right in front of his face, not mid screen. This technique will most likely work because an Abel player cannot 100% predict what you do during that time.
If I’m playing offline and my opponent picks Abel, I wait to see if he’s going to pick Breathless, in which case I pick Hosenka.
Online, I just always pick Hosenka against Abel, since I have hardly ever seen instances where I felt that using U2 would have saved my matchup, ESPECIALLY if they’re using Breathless.
Alright, I’m going to make a pass of the last few pages and update the op for an overdue update. If people have stuff they think should be put in, taken out, or changed, nowish would be a good time to let me know!
I think what he means is that Hosenka is hard counter to Breathless.
Since Chun U1 is armor breaking, the first hit(7 frames) should break Breathless’s armor and continue the full combo. So if the Abel player does it, charge during the Ultra freeze, and activate it ASAP.
Hey guys I was watching Air vs Justin from the Canada Cup and I noticed that when Justin EX Messiah’d and FADC backdashed to be safe, Air punished him with Ryu’s super. It’s 2 frames if I’m not mistaken, so I was wondering if Chun could punish with super as well? Can’t test this because I currently don’t have my PS3.
No, Rufus will be airborne when he gets hit so it’d be a waste. Chun-Li can sweep for knockdown or fierce for reset.
A thought: It might be worth it to mash LK Legs if you block Rufus’ LK follow up. If he backdashes (I dunno if it will reach cuz I don’t have the game either), you will knock him a full screen away from you. If he forward dashes, you’ll frame trap him. It would be an exploitable habit, though, so it could work but it’s best to use a proper reaction.
Damn that sucks. Didn’t know about the frame trapping bit if he dashes forward thanks for that. I usually only go for standing close roundhouse if he doesn’t have the meter and I think he’s going to go for either the overhead/sweep mixup, but like you mentioned, it’s all situational.
Chun-Li -can- ultra. But it’s easier for Rufus to Alter the timing on the back dash so he’s airborne at a different time. But I guess you could train yourself to see when the back dash ends.
It’s one of the less practical FADC backdashes to ultra midscreen as opposed to say Rog or Gief where you can just auto pilot reversal ultra and it’ll connect regardless. If his back is to the corner though you can auto-pilot the reversal ultra and get the full juggle.
Speaking of full juggles, if you reversal EX legs against any of Abel’s wheelkicks it’ll automatically launch the same way the cr, lk, cr. lp, cr.mk xx EX legs combo does. So with his back towards the corner, you can block a wheelkick, drum out reversal EX Legs and make him land on top of Ultra 1 for a full juggle. This is particularly useful versus the EX wheelkick since it’s the only version you can’t reversal Ultra 1 directly.
