Solomon Grundy is more like the Hulk than Doomsday. Hulk himself is an interesting character.
The problem with Red Hulk he was a mary sue out the gate. Beating Hulk immediately after the shit that went down in World War Hulk, Tossing Thor like a ragdoll, punching out the Watcher for absolutely no reason and Loeb even planned for him to thunderclap Eternity before the editors put a stop to that. He was getting the Roman Reigns push and no one was feeling it. It wasn’t until he was taken down several pegs before anyone tolerated him.
I think Red Hulk can work as a hero but only as a morally ambiguous one. His stunt as an avenger was fun.
He did have a Dbry in the regular Hulk. Planet Hulk and World War Hulk put him on top of the world and insanely popular. They fucked it all up following those stories up with Red Hulk.
Green Scar Hulk was the talk of the comic world then Rulk came and fucked it all up. I’ll hate him forever for that. Fuck that character.
Mark Waid’s shit was great now that I recall. Really really respectful to the material while adding to the mythos. The way writers are supposed to do to a iconic franchise book.
I never saw Grundy as a Hulk replacement personally. He was took weak and got taken down by mid tier low tier heroes pre 52. In N52 he’s gotten a mini push but they seem to have dropped it.
Doomsday always seemed to fill that role more. Only fighting top tiers, incredible healing, never truly dying. All Hulk traits, but none of Hulk’s depth.
Grundy is more like Hulk in terms of how his character works. He’s often written in a child like manner wanting to be left alone and usually coerce him into criminal activity. He gains a new personally each time he dies which is just a plot device to explain away why he acts so different whenever a new writer gets a hold him. Much in the same way that Hulk was given multiple personalities to explain his wildly different characterization among writers. There was one Justice League story where Grundy resurrected with intelligence and bodied the entire Justice League for free with little effort. My man had slick back hair and a nice suit and generally behaving like the Joe Fixit Hulk.
That doesn’t mean a whole lot in the medium of superhero comics. Characters get passed around enough that at least somebody can turn a character into something decent. Case in point being what Geoff Johns did for the Green Lantern franchise.
Green Lantern was already awesome. Kyle Rayner’s comics were some of the best the franchise had in…ever. Most fans still consider him the best Lantern.
Johns didnt save the GL franchise he took a dump on a great character to force Hal Jordan back into spotlight because he’s a fanboy of Jordan.
It’s like if Nightwing was finally given the reigns of Batman for like 10 years. Justice League, movies, the whole works. Then I came along and changed all kinds of shit to ensure Bruce was taking the mantle back and Dick was pushed to offshoot books and side storys. That’s more accurate.
Most fans want Rulk to go away. If he has to be used he should be the premier Hulk villian. Fuck that Avengers shit.
I look at that like the Lex luther /Cap Cold shit in Justice league right now. It’s cute for like a month or two but that’s it. I want to see them fighting the heroes not this lame overdone “all is forgiven” tension shit Marvel is on.
Avengers having villains on the team is a tradition dating back to Avengers #16. Having a villain like Red Hulk on the team isn’t anything out of the ordinary. The character stopped being an absolute shit by then. Rulk is in the Thunderbolts now which is a team he can actually fit in with.
I second the sentiment of Kyle being my favourite of the Earth lanterns, but Johns definitely did some cool stuff with the lantern mythos, Hal wank nonwithstanding.
The Dickbat situation is also a shame, because I liked him in the cowl more than I like Bruce most of the time. If anything, I’d say he’s an even better succesor to Bruce in the New 52 for the simple fact that everyone. thinks he’s dead.
Rulk as an antagonist for the Hulk works fine, but I’d be okay with him being on teams where he wouldn’t share membership with the Hulk. Which is why him being on a team like the Thunderbolts works.
The Cap. Cold and Lex situation is fair, though I don’t mind Cold being on the team. Lex is cool for a story arc, but the Amazo virus shit should pretty much result in him getting the boot.
I know that Hawk. I’m just saying I prefer my Villains being villains. One of the reasons I liked the JL better as a kid was they were harder on villains while the Avengers seemed straight up soft on them. Still do.
There are fans of it so I tolerate it but honestly I hate this trend of heroes buddying up to killers and villains because it’s suits the moment then deciding to keep them around. It was okay when it was just the Avengers because I know their shady history but I can’t stand it in the League.
Pine is a bigger name so he’ll likely get the part if he wants it but honestly I’d rather go with the lesser known Eastwood spawn. Less demanding schedule getting in the way of future movies if it somehow turns out not shit.
Either way it’s likely dead in the water if faildot as the lead.
