Balrog Thread

Why isn’t this his main costume?

recent findings. a lot of finger cramp’s “guide” to balrog is wrong. with s.jab’s range being shorter than in sf4, s.jab xx cr.hk chain is NOT safe, contrary to what he says. it will get punished by a lot of characters who have a good medium kick, such as bison, and you will get fully comboed even if it’s blocked. bison can also do s.mk xx s.hk for free against you, and you will not be able to chip back with your farthest poke, the s.jab. even guile can poke you with c.mk xx fw.s.hk for free and you can’t reach him afterwards.

this being the case, i found balrog’s pressure game to be more shit than i initially thought. after a knockdown, which is useless because any reversal will beat a jump in, balrog can be poked out of anything he does with a far reaching magic series like bison’s. any sort of mix up you try is unsafe. regular or ex overheads will be poked out of (since theres no armour) and cannot be cancelled out of anymore, mixing it up with rush sweeps are unsafe on block, even tick throws will be beaten by players mashing crouch tech into magic series, and if you try to frame trap them, the only trap that’s safe is cr.mp xx jab straight. any thing else seems to be punishable on block

here is a video of the spin glitch

whats the point of the low smash in this game? it seems pretty useless.

Can some one confirm if its possible to do: J.hk, c.lp, c.mp, ex upper, c.lp, c.mp, ex upper, c.lp, c.mp, (chose your follow up…i would like to do a 3rd ex upper) AT MID SCREEN? I’m hoping the c.lp and c.mp will connect after ex upper if not that would be a huge disappointment…
It seems kinda of tricky to do c.lp, s.lp, ex upper it doesnt feel right as shown in the trial
The ex upper does look badass and powerful specially in a combo.
Kind of sucks he has no armor on ex low sweep dash and ex overhead.
Is it still possible to do ex double armor as in going through 2 fireballs with just one ex bar?

If the above ex upper combo does not work then why bother putting it in a trial if its only c.lp, s.lp they need to give back his c.lp, clp, c.lk or after ex upper c.lp, c.lk.
Has any one heard about capcom giving us the classical first alt suit from sf4 you know the one with the hooded cap? I love that suit.
Thanks in advance

in the corner if you do low smash with HK you can combo into cr.lk before they land and headbutt. you can do J.HK, cl.st HK, cr.MP, HK low smash, cr.lk, cr.mp Headbutt or dash punch

st. lp, st. mp, st.hp. I think I got a cr. lp after it though. I wanted to try st. lp (or mp) into dash straight, but couldn’t get the timing (if it’s even possible). This was me playing all of like… a day earlier this week.

I’m running Cammy/Rog at the moment.

I don’t think thats a glitch, you just dont get the wall bounce if you hit them in the air. They have to be grounded.

Something I found after doing a bit of training mode:

-fs. lp, fs. hp (don’t chain cancel) seems to be a pretty decent frame trap. If you space it properly it should be reasonably safe on block because of the push back. Also fs. hp crumples on counter hit, so if you catch your opponent pressing buttons at the wrong time, you get an opportunity to do some big damage.
-TAP puts crumpling opponents in a wall bounce state.
-I imagine once your opponent becomes scared of throwing random pokes after they block a jab, you can start pressuring them more aggressively.

Is it possible to do a J.hk, c.lp, c.mp, ex upper, c.lp, c.mp, ex upper at MID SCREEN?
or
Is it possible to do a J.hk, c.mp, c.mp ex upper, c.mp, c.mp, ex upper also at mid screen?

Can some one please verify this for me with both of the above options i would be grateful thx.
What’s the point of having ex upper without proper follow ups (ie another ex upper combo) except maybe as an anti air…

I really like Balrog, but in this game he feels a little different.

this game is so fast paced it feels like I have much less time to charge his moves during combos than in previous games.

I will say this though, when at full screen charging the straights & uppers is actually quite useful and it helps a ton against characters without projectiles because they’re so safe, fast, and have armor.

I feel like his dash punches need to come out faster, I can still catch people with them it just feels like their speed has been nerf’d along with their range.

My god, Balrog/Zang is just insanely good.

I’d having to much fun, especially with Zang’s godlike grab traps.

I’m playing a bipson-balrog team, I feel like balrog has good damage output and nice pokes as usual, he should be played differently from his iv counterpart. His smash to tap to crouch strong headbutt is a blast together with his bnb headbutt to dash straight. I don’t feel like I can say anything about how good he is but I sure love this team!

The thing that’s most missing is rog telling bipson “guess you won’t be needing those tapes”!

Edit, rog has his charge move which acquires armor and that’s a big plus I think, just really need to figure it out!

Yeah I’m playing Rog/Bison as well. Thought I was the only one. Balrog is ok, but he’s so much slower than he was in AE - his normals, specials startup and recovery take a lot longer in general. I reckon it’s kinda hard to rush anyone down with Balrog in this game. Headbutt can only be used in this game as anti-air or for punishing a missed dp I’ve found so far. I don’t understand why they made it so his headbutt whiffs (non-EX) on crouching opponents.

I didn’t see this anywhere but I’ve been doing an easy meter-less Bnb that does 317 dmg.

its just cr.mp, lp.headbutt, cr.mp, rush upper and jump forward roundhouse

you can get around 370 with a jump in too

That won’t hit on a crouching opponent though.

I tend to try to do combos that lead to tags - let steve handle the heavy lifting damage wise - and let balrog connect with his less solid but still solid normals.

Balrog has some cool combos and some DECENT damage, but I can’t help but feel like his strengths still remain in his pokes (which can lead to larger damage depending on who you pair him with) rather than a big combo game.

I know just do ex headbutt when they’re crouching and you’re all good

if you’re gonna use EX (which i prefer to keep for my secondary character) i’d prefer doing more damaging combos potentially with EX smash (assuming those are more damaging I s’pose)
