Balrog (Boxer) Beginner's Guide

Top stuff! This is basically how I try to play the match. I use jab straight rush sparingly to catch gief off gaurd but making sure that I don’t get predictable.

One thing on jumping, there is a distance where jumping is safe where your jump fierce will be his lariat every time. But outside of this jumping at gief is pretty stupid(although I still do it sometimes:shake:).

i have a question.

about the overhead punch to cr.lk, sometimes my timing is perfect, but sometimes i end up not crouching to do it. are there certain people that cannot make the overhead punch lkxxhp headbutt? i think my timing with most of rog’s combos are pretty sublime at this rate. (an occasional combo slide makes me lose, but otherwise my offensive pressure is pretty up there)

another question. how are people remedying the back front kick motions. usually when i feel like a grand rush upper, i end up having the MvC screen breaker punch used instead.

I have some q’s also; Im trying to prepare as good as i can for sf4 boxer, but im wondering what char from previous games he’s the most alike? super turbo boxer? urien?? another charge char?

Also, if i can do c.lp c.lp s.lp rush in supah turbo, will i be able to do these sf4 combos with relative ease?

I have a kinda tough time doing that combo consistently in ST but everything feels more natural and easy in SFIV. lp lp lp headbutt is pretty easy and gives you a knockdown which is why I use that more than his old school combos.

If you haven’t had a chance to play SFIV yet then you’re going to be really happy with the new rog. He rocks and is even better than his ST version. I’ve been jamming STHDR constantly at home and whenever I head out to the arcade everything feels so much more fluid and responsive. Rog is joy to play in SFIV and if you can do ST Rog then you’ll have no problem.

can you do rush punch/upper into ultra/super like in st?
for example: :l::df::k::l::r::3p:

Thats good to hear, because I am definately not a combomaster. I hope these combo’s turn out to be pretty easy!

rush punch upper into super yes

but no ultra :frowning:

I’ve been playing Boxer on and off lately, and I’ve found that the BNB combo C. Short - Fierce Buffalo Headbutt whiff on:

Sagat
Guile
Blanka
Boxer (Big surprise, whiffed headbutts for the lose)

Does anyone else no which other combos he possess that just don’t work on certain characters? Are there character/ body frame specific combos to know about?

Could you explain further dontdodat? I get the BNB jab jab short headbutt on all of those characters except a ducking Blanka.

Maybe he’s referring to a max range cr LK?

I.E. Following a EX overhead rush punch or an EX rush upper.

I haven’t played in a while but I’m pretty sure that EX overhead rush punch, cr LK xx HB doesn’t work on Rog or Sagat either.

Ah, yes.

Overhead to short headbutt combo does not work on Sagat, Mirror, and Blanka. I’ve done it on Guile plenty of times. There is also a case where it will work on Mirror matches: If you EX overhead rush punch and the other Rog rush punches with anything that does not break armor, you absorb the hit, get the overhead, and it will combo with short > Headbutt.

I’ve also been playing around with the Ultra juggle after the headbutt and here are my findings:

I used to use Upper > Straight > Upper > Upper > Finish for most characters. Unfortunately in the corner, Honda, Mirror, and Abel (at least that I’ve found so far) fall behind you after the second upper. I found that going early Ultra -> Straight > Straight > Upper > Upper > Finish will keep them in the juggle (maybe old? I just figured it out recently).

Just this past weekend, from mid screen, I’ve switched up to Upper > Upper > Straight > Upper > Finisher because I think it does more damage overall. I was running on very little sleep so I fucked up my usual pattern (posted above) and got this one instead. Using this series though, I found it to be a little more damage after a little extra testing. However, it causes every character to fall behind you in the corner, so I switch to the original series in corners (except Honda, Mirror, and Abel).

Just stuff I found out for myself recently. May be old news to a lot of the better Rogs here.

You might be right with the Upper > Upper > Straight > Upper > Finish sequence doing more damage but its hard to know without a video. What I’m guessing is that combination gives you all three hits of the finisher as opposed to two hits from Upper > Straight > Upper > Upper > Finish. I’m guna play with it today.

Overhead to c.lk xx headbutt can work on all characters its just specific for each one. For Sagat the problem is that he gets pushed back far by Overhead rush so is out of range for c.lk xx HB to connect. This is the same case for Guile too…what you can do instead is use c.mp xx straight rush which is harder to time but will give similar damage. The only time I find that c.lk xx HB connects on Sagat and Guile is either when you hit them in the corner or when they tried to hit you during an Ex Rush Upper. For Blanka its just a simple matter of whether or not he was standing when ya hit him with Overhead rush. If standing c.lk xx HB works fine if crouching c.mp xx straight rush will do the trick.

Whoa, this is news to me. I’m going to have to try this.

Thanks ToOoOomeke.

yo rog players, i don’t know what I did over this past weekend but i found a new combo, or at least was able to find this on my own… please confirm as i was able to get this:

OH > dash punch > super

i thought it was cool… i was able to charge back fast after the initial over head so i got the dash punch… i think cause my oh was from a distance… but it is possible…

Shouldn’t be possible the frames don’t allow it. Did you combo into the dash punch say c.jab xx dash punch xx super. Thats possible I’ve done it a bunch.

i was able to but i wasn’t sure what OH i did but it was from a distance then jab dash to super… i swear to god…

Back to the labs!

So when doing headbutt -> ultra can someone give me some tips on the timing when to execute the Ultra? I haven’t been able to practice much, so when I finally can I want my moneys worth of practice with some insight.

Umm, you’ll get a feel for it. I’ve started to use the Ultra less and less as a juggle because the damage is nerfed so much. I’ll use it off of a headbutt on its own, or maybe like a strong > headbutt punish but I try and save it if it’s off of a jump in > jab jab short headbutt.

Anyhow, like I was saying, you’ll get a feeling. I guess if you input it as they start the fall downwards, it should hit fine. If it’s mid screen, it really doesn’t matter how early you do it.

I know what you mean, but there’s not too many other chances to use and hit with it.

With the Ultra juggle: Upper > Straight > Upper > Straight > Finish causes them to fall before the finish right?
been a little while since I played so I can’t think if it would work or not.

What do you guys think about using EX moves? I know they’re real good and can lead to some good combos, but Dash punch xx Super is nothing to laugh at right? I’m asking cause I play him without really using ex moves and storing up for Super and i’m wondering if I should.
