Jon, I rarely say anything about your posts, but I’ll bite this time and offer this one piece of advice. As soon as fighting games for you becomes about winning and not having fun…its time to quit. I will use myself as an example, and disregard the post from arnold that will most likely follow shortly, due to him loving me long time.
I dont touch MVC3 or any fighting games at home, I use that time for more constructive things. I literally dont practice, but at least once (lately twice or more due to dev) a week, I will go to a friends house, usually joshs or horacios, and we play for fun. We use chars we dont always play, we try new shit, we laugh and have FUN. Nobody really cares who wins or loses. How well you perform at the game should not dictate or equal how much fun you have, the company your keeping and the fact your enjoying a common interest with your friends should take priority, and winning and or getting better should just be a bonus/byproduct.
you will notice, when im able to make it to haz’s, I spend 75% of my time outside, or talking to somebody I havent seen in a while, not sitting in front of a screen.
If you truly enjoy fighitng games, it is ENTIRELY possible to have them in your life, yet still be productive with most of your time. If you truly let the game dictate and lead your life in a certain direction for the past few years, you are correct in wanting to take a step back and put things into perspective. I’m not the best player around, but im ok with that because the time i put in is truly very minimal compared to those who are pulling out the wins, which make the victories I get that much sweeter.
If you want to be the guy who wins all the time, be prepared to make sacrifices and lose out on certain aspects of life. If you want to be the guy who enjoys a few games with some friends from time to time, be prapared to get beat more often than you like, and watch people around you who put in more time get better than you (i used to have no problems beating you, now you own my face).
Just my 2 cents, but I’d suggest finding out what want out of fighting games, a career or a hobby, cause last i checked career consumes your time, while a hobbie occupies a small portion for entertainment A.K.A. “fun”.
