Avatar: The Legend of Korra - Book 4

You can’t have much depth of character from ONE movie. Zuko and Aang really were the only two that had a backstory and depth to them. Everyone else was just there for the ride.

Edit: Just to add, apparently the movie is gonna take in about 57 million after this weekend. Factor in whatever the foreign sales will be, possible sequel could be on the way.

Yea can have a lot of character depth from ONE movie. Don’t give us that fuckin bullshit dude.

thanks to all the iilegal movie sites being shut down i can’t watch it for free, meaning i won’t be wasting my money on the theatre version, i wonder how “explosive” it would of been if Michael Bay directed it :stuck_out_tongue:

there are tons of movies with character development. that’s completely asinine to say that.

if you’re trying to build up a character, you need to write the movie accordingly. shyamalan basically took storyline episodes, stripped them down to basic events, and tried to compress it down to an hour and 40 minues. a GOOD writer could’ve gotten it done.

Yeah, I guess you’re right. I mean there’s no character depth in Up, How to Train Your Dragon, Terminator 2, Unbreakable, each individual Toy Story, Castle in the Sky, Pan’s Labyrinth, Children of Men, Full Metal Jacket, Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, each individual Godfather, Castle of Cagliostro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, South Park the movie, The Empire Strikes Back, Philadelphia, The Matrix, Casablanca, each individual Spider-Man, each individual X-Men, each individual Iron Man, each individual Lord of the Rings, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Superman I, Superman II, Superman Returns, Kick Ass, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, WALL-E, Monsters Inc., Kung Fu Panda, The Sixth Sense, In Bruges, Inglorious Basterds, Pulp Fiction, The Place Promised in Our Earlier Days, Serenity, Metropolis, Coraline …

(five hours later)

… The Rescuers Down Under, Atlantis, The Princess and The Frog, Princess Mononoke, Sahara, each individual Bourne movie, Hancock …

(you might want to go get a drink and give prayer to Dr. B your lord and savior)

This isn’t 1999 dude, you can put those qualms to rest

Not really. Every time this guy comes out with a new movie the trailer always opens up with “From the mastermind who brought you the Sixth Sense.” or “He thrilled you with the movie Signs” or “From the maker of ‘insert crappy movie here’” blah blah blah.
Then the Hollywood hype machine goes into action, further hyping this hack with interviews, magazine articles etc.
Apparently it’s working because there are still sheepeople who actually think he’s a great movie maker and KEEP GIVING HIM MONEY.

I really and truly hope that people finally wake up with this movie despite the 57+ million opening weekend. Might I remind you all again that the original Hulk movie opened with 60+ million and you know what happened after that.
Hopefully Last Airbender will follow it down the drain of box office oblivion.

Let me just say Karate Kid was good. After seeing that, my friend and I decided to see the last showing of Airbender in 3D.

First, this was my first 3D movie and it didn’t do much for me. I would preferred without it just so I didn’t have to wear the glasses.

Movie, ugh the lack of character development was brutal. As I think about it now, the entire movie was a blur. The characters (Katara, Sokka, Aang, Zuko) felt they were always on edge or completely emotionless. I can see how Dev Patel was trying to get Zuko’s character down, but it look like it backfired on him (and he needs a more noticeable burn scar). They had no authenticity or feeling. Take Zhao for instance, he wasn’t the bad tempered commander anymore. The worst line had to be Noah talking about meditation. God that was extremely lifeless. Any humor present was either glossed over because of the dead acting or ignored.

The name pronunciations weren’t a big deal for me. Neither was the race of each nation. We thought it was funny seeing all of Zhao’s crew as South Asians and Sokka & Katara’s grandma white as all hell, but whatever.

The movie didn’t flow well. It kept jumping around just to insert “so and so important dialogue” to brief the audience and went scene-to-scene too fast. That was annoying. The scenes that were suppose to be important failed. There was no build up whatsoever. It seemed like the best moments from the show were chosen and put in just for the hell of it. Then you have Zhao telling Iroh what he’s going to do in the North Pole. Iroh knows but he doesn’t do anything then? What the hell?! Why wait until the end to warn him?

Bending. Too much twirling around IMO. It came off as overcomplicated. I didn’t like how fire was changed where it must be present in the immediate area to utilize it.

I think the movie had potential. I did think how they introduced the water scroll was good and enjoyed Zuko talking when Aang was waking up. It felt real and genuine. That small fight they have before Katara rolls through was the only scene I probably liked.

Overall, blah. It might have been slightly better if I haven’t seen the TV series, but I don’t know.

^ That was your first 3D movie? You didn’t see Avatar? That’s the only 3D movie worth seeing.

Wow. It’s crazy how often I’ve read your post in this thread and I went “no way somebody can actually think that.”

It’s called studio-driven publicity dude. Do you think press junkets are some form of objective journalism?

Don’t forget Up! and How to Train Your Dragon, which both have AMAZING 3D. And I hate 3D.

Also, this is going to come out of left field, but remember when I needed different fruit for my AC:WW town and, after I got it, I just kinda bolted? That was a dick move; I apologize. If it’s any consolation my town was destroyed by an early Ragnarok.

Dr. B never feels lonely thanks to his astral connection to all living things.

Negative, unfortunately.

Maybe i chose my words or sentence incorrectly. I feel M.Night only gave us the surface depth of these characters. It came off like he was afraid of portraying these characters like there show counterparts. Maybe he’s trying to extend it out to the next movie in order to flesh them out, who knows?

If the next movie gets made, he needs to get someone else to write the script.

Another failure from M. Night. I expected as much and I really only went to see it because it was Avatar. I will not be seeing any sequels unless they get a new writer/director combo. The script was awful and the acting was really terrible. LOL @ Zuko’s “scar” that is so faint that no one even notices it through most of the movie. Did his father singe him with a curling iron?

Wait, so if this is true then the studio must be reeeeaaaally mad.

Let’s hope they remake the movie the way it should have been with the right director.

I don’t know what is wrong with everyone; I enjoyed the movie. No, it wasn’t the best movie I have ever seen, but it was decent. It seems like everyone is “perfection or bust,” but you have to realize that sometimes “just decent” is OK too. There were some definite errors (many actors were crap, pronunciation was off, and armwaving is wtf), but I think it was worth my money.

Spooty, Heatman avatar or not, you are dead to me now.

R.I.P.

(But, seriously, you’ve watched the cartoon series, right? You honestly think it’s decent compared to that? Sure, they had to cut out some parts, but that doesn’t mean that lifelessness, overly fast pacing, constant telling instead of showing and nonsensical movements need arise from the problems caused by trying to make something run at a fifth of its time. Unprofessional Abridged series manage to do better…)

This is such an understatement that it might as well be classified as litotes along with a lot of the other “defense” in this thread, mostly by you.

That’s still not an excuse for almost 2 hours being devoid of character development. If you seriously think that “a movie is allowed to be flat, dull and thoroughly embarrassing to its source because it has two potential sequels in the work”, then I really don’t know what to say.

Are you going to use that same sad excuse if the second movie (in the unfortunately likely chance that it still gets made) turns out to be as “decent” (read: bad) as this one?

He needs to get taken off the project entirely because he’s a hack.

In the interview with M Night on one of the cartoon dvds, he said that Zuko was by far his favorite character in the series. Because of this, I can’t help but think that Dev was chosen to play Zuko due to M Night wanting an indian actor out of favoritism.

Not sure how he came up with the ‘races representing each of the 4 nations’ idea. A lot of people seem to think that the undertoning racism is from the heroes being white, and the villains being brown. But in Shamwow’s defense against that claim, Zuko and Iroh are actually good guys eventually.

That still doesn’t justify shafting east asians from a story deeply rooted in east asian culture.

I’ve seen the cartoon and the movie is crap compared to it. But like literature to movies, cartoons are a different medium and they work in different ways. As I said, the movie is decent, but it could have been much better.

My major reasons for not hating the movie:

  • M. Night is a fan of the cartoon. It would be like one of us had a chance to write a fan-movie and get it out. We might not do a great job, but it would still be awesome.
  • This is supposed to be the first of a trilogy. Seeing as how much story is (rushed) in this movie, I am hoping that the second and third can be done in greater detail.
  • The actors sucked in this movie, but I’m certain they would be forced to take acting classes before another is made.
  • While the arm-flailing was ridiculous, it was funny in a bad-sort-of-way.
