I understand that its just i rather the actor dictate whether they can pull off the role rather than just shoehorning a person of that ethnicity just to shut people up.
I remember people being up in arms slightly when Michael Clark Duncan was The Kingpin in Daredevil. Would i rather it be a white guy? Sure why not but the fact is, Duncan was cast and I honestly felt he pulled the role off well for the character. Same as Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury.
Meh, I just don’t like the actor chosen for Aang. I’d prefer some skinny lanky kid instead.
This boy looks too pudgy to be the avatar!
Only because the director is indian.
what the FUCK are you talking about? ofcourse the race matters you stupid fuck “GTFO” what the blue hell are you fucking saying? your saying all these white people getting all the good acting jobs, and its fucking ok for them to get the jobs other ethnicities could finally be “allowed” to get and its fine
you fucking stupid idiot I havent heard anything so fucking stupid in my life.
I was reading an article about this shit, loads of people of different races were looking foward to the film because of how they felt the show depicted them well, now we have the usual white supremecy shit wedged right into the fucking centre of it
FUCK YOU :annoy:
^ Calm down. You’re reading too much into the casting choices. I would have preferred ethnically-appropriate characters, but I wouldn’t complain about a black/asian/latino/venusian man playing Superman.
Dr. B is all races and all sexes.
I agree that some choices to play characters are weird in hollywood. Like Michael Clarke Duncan being Kingpin. Sam Jackson though fits if they are doing the Ultimate Universe of Nick Fury who is black.
What I find weird is that they are changing the theme of the whole fire nation from Chinese to Indian. Also they could cast people to look more like Katara and Sokka.
Dragonball was fucked up though. They couldn’t get any shit right. I personally thought Goku would be Asian because well he was based off the Sun Wukong the monkey king and all the supporting cast was asian. But come on, if you wanna cast a white guy, cast someone better at least!
But I have to say the KOF movie looks really bad in comparison. KYO KASANAGI with an asian dad but he’s a white guy!!! In other news Mickey Rourke is gonna play Ghenghis Khan in an upcoming movie and Jake Gyllenhal (sp?) is the Prince of Persia :lame:.
edit: I still need to get a free copy of KOF to watch even though it looks like complete shit. Just because they told me there’s a mature and vice scene. At least they are hot.
double edit: Also seriously? Terry looks like a trucker and he’s beating people with what looks like a sleeping bag. They can’t even cast white guys right!!!
Now see this is a real complaint. He does look pudgy doesn’t he?
I hope this little white girl can pull off Kitara’s ferocity at the end. She seems like a little bitch atm.
But I’ll be seeing this on opening day, if for no other reason than to see bending in three fucking dee.
I don’t care about the movie, I just want a Blue ray Avatar Series DVD!
Personal problems with the casting shouldn’t dictate whether the movie will suck or not.
I honestly don’t put much stock into the intricacy’s of a movie. I’m very much aware of the culture and background of the Avatar show and how it is rooted in Asian culture. But when i watch that trailer, all of that means nothing to me cause i see a movie that has the potential to be awesome. I see people embodying characters from a show that i loved and doing a pretty good job from what i’ve seen so far.
@Kusanagi02: At first, when I heard about the casting and the “racebending” Shyamalan did, I thought his decisions were pretty shitty and I was pretty indignant. The cartoon was racially diverse, pulling from all kinds of ethnicities and cultures and with the movie it seems like they’re giving us a bunch of (mostly…) white kids and an indian.
I’ll agree that yeah we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover and all that and that the performances are what we should judge it on. But, it sounds like you’re saying regardless of casting or ethnicity, that stuff shouldn’t matter, but I think here it does make a difference. For example, what if instead of Christian Bale playing Batman/Bruce Wayne in the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, he casted Jackie Chan? If the performance was just as good and the action just as adept would it still be the same movie? IMO, it’d be a completely different movie.
So, for Avatar, for a story that’s so steeped in certain cultures and ideas unique to those cultures, to whitewash so much of that away takes away from the world-building and connection to certain cultures and their histories.
It looks like the movie’s being done in the spirit of the cartoon series and if they can get the characterizations right it’ll be good. Anyway, I’ll still go watch the movie and reserve final judgment for then, but I still think some of the casting choices were poor.
This is the way I see it: If you can get a white guy to somehow convince me he’s Chinese in a story that has strong Chinese cultural elements, be my guest.
However, if you cast a white guy as Chinese, and he’s unconvincing, then fuck you, you should’ve picked someone else.
So I will reserve judgment till when the show is released. If nothing else, purty action’s a given.
kusanagi- your human so im gonna apologise to you, but what your saying is beyond ignorant. and if you’re actually a guy who isnt western caucasian with a specific self respect for their culture then you must see the rediculousness of it all
now this is funny, ghenghis khan played by mickey rourke? HAHAHA well possibly… well really it was secretely caucasians that helped the dynasty’s of china, like how they helped africa build egypt and america build graves
prince of persia thing- hahahaha (the actual prince auditioned for it too)
what I think has happened is that all those years of racist depictions we have been manipulated in believing that only caucasians can be the hero, wow clark duncan is the king pin? they changed a marvel character from white to BLACK??? oh he’s the villain, thats why. ooo look blade! oh but he’s half a lunatic vampire… ok
as for KING OF FIGHTERS- hahaha I dont think the casting is as bad as it seems, the film looks shit though.
kyo doesnt look full asian at all, hes eurasian. I even honestly think his dad is quater caucasian, he doesnt look full asian. I think the guy they got for the movie must be partly asian
see I look for things that make sense, im not bitter im laughing at how fucking stupid the world is, not hollywood, they’ve done what they wanted and you all bent over and lubed up
Your example has a lot more to do with Jackie Chan being a completely different kind of actor from Bale and less with him being Chines. I see the point your making but this isn’t a good example.
Dr. B is also all religions because he is God.
you really couldn’t have flown off the handle anymore if you tried. ever stop to think that the asian actors needed either weren’t available, or the ones available were no good or asking for too much money?
unless you have some secret video of shamalan plotting to screw over asians with his film, try taking a back seat and seeing how things play out.
well I have a feeling the film will be good
and thats one contributing factor to my anger, im sure there are atleast a couple of hundred asian actors in line to be in this film, why the hell is there even a white guy in the line up at all???
these excuses are weaK
Anyways another thing that bothers me is about who they chose for Aang. He’s a 12 yr old playing a 12 yr old, but damn does he look young in the movie. Like Sokka’s played by a 25 yr old and Zuko a 20 yr old. I mean they really didn’t have to pick someone who was 12 just cause Aang is 12.
I kinda feel like they HAD to pick a young-looking-even-for-12 kid to play Aang. I mean, all 3 seasons of the TV show happened over the course of 1 year. The actor playing Aang will probably be like 16 by the time they finish the 3rd movie. He’s probably going to lose those chubby cheeks by then, or maybe hit a big growth spurt.
Kid actors aging worked out for the Harry Potter movies because the characters aged in the book. Aang is still 12 at the end of the TV show.
^_-;
It isn’t ignorant. I just don’t go out of my way to make things like casting choices a racial thing and hinder me from enjoying a movie.
As i said before as a fan of the show, I well aware at the amount of asian culture influence the show had. Should they have casted some asian people in the movie? Sure why not but they didn’t and it isn’t the end of the world. The movie is still gonna be awesome.
On a sidenote regarding the whole KOF casting: Now the only reason i know Kyo is Japanese is based on what we’re told and where he resides at in the game and storyline. Now when i see any picture of Kyo I honestly don’t see Japanese. I see a white guy who probably has a hint of Japanese in him which is probably why they casted a white guy as Kyo. Is it a valid excuse for the casting choice? No but at least for me, I can see why they casted that guy as Kyo.
Loved the show and I hope they put it on blu ray someday. I have mixed feelings about the movie for 2 reasons. 1, the cast choices. I’m sure a bunch of things affected this, but I guessing they didn’t even try. 2. Shyamalan is writing, directing and producing it. The only good movies he has under his belt IMO are Six Sense and Unbreakable. Everything else was shit.
I think The Last Airbender is the same way. People think the movie is going to be awesome because the trailers are awesome. The same thing can be said about his other movies.
Where the fuck is Appa?
