Assault on the ragequiters

Banthur:

I can see what you’re saying here.

It ultimately does boil down to a system for measuring how good one is at gaining rank, and not necessarily at measuring one’s skill at the game. I must admit that I’d been looking at it in the way it was intended, rather than what it is. In this way, the ranking system is much more akin to something like the LSAT–it’s supposed to measure one’s ability to handle the rigors of the first year of law school, but what it really measures is how well one can do on the LSAT.

I still see this as being unfortunate, but I take your point.

:wasted:
Wow.
Hey, this is ST and HDr we’re talking about…i NEVER know when i’ll lose.

This thread has definitely taken a turn for the worse. We’re seriously debating whether or not possibly falsifying one’s ranked record is a legit tactic?

This bug gives everyone all the more reason not to play ranked. You’d think every game would be established as it’s own entity so that, if someone disconnects, their character just ends up standing there…just like if someone walked away from the controls. It’s obvious that a disconnect should be a loss, much like I was saying back when SF4 was a year out from release. This is not even close to being debatable.

Sometimes, I really wish I was a mod.

It’s just like any other game system: you either accept the bugs and abuse them to your own ends or get upset about them and post on forums.

People need to stop putting so much stock into ranked matches, the only thing they represent is how good you are at gaining rank.

As it is the system can be approached rather mathematically: if your odds of winning are less than the odds of you getting a win from disconnecting, you should disconnect.

Obviously knowing either of these quantities is basically impossible but they can be estimated in some situations. For example: you have disconnected a lot and kept track of the resulting win/losses and seen approximately a 20% win rate. Now say you are in a situation such that if you are hit with any chip damage you will die. As soon as a fireball/special is thrown such that you cannot avoid it, you should disconnect. You have improved your odds of winning from 0% to 20%.

I think most people would agree that the system is flawed on a conceptual level and I would agree it is not a perfect system. I think many people underestimate the difficulty of creating a system that handles all disconnection cases with 100% accuracy (although if the PS3 statistics of 50/50 are accurate, that is pretty bad). Remember the net code is done on a peer-to-peer basis which makes tracking disconnections even more difficult (and opens the doors for very disastrous exploits, if anyone knows about Halo 2’s problems).

At any rate my goal was not to upset anyone but rather to be a reminder that the rank system is only representative of who gains rank best, not who is most skilled. It is also important to remember that most people who quit are rage quitting and have not put this kind of thought into their decision.

That’s actually a really good statement, the one I put in bold. I think people should probably keep that in mind. For the MOST part, most players get high rankings thanks to just being good and doing it the legitimate way. But there are people who will figure out other means by which to increase their ranks, and without trying to discuss it like it’s a legitimate strategy or whatever, it’s just a good thing to keep in mind.

For the most part, those up there are just good enough to let their game get them up there. But there will always be those few people who just try to get up there through not-so legitimate means.

Well…as usual, can’t help but agree with you there. It’s just silly to me, however, that the netcode programmers couldn’t forsee how their “roll of the dice” method would hurt the legitimacy of the leaderboard. I mean…you already have enough factors that are hard enough to control when it comes to the netcode, but this is one of those things that should’ve been caught long before the game first came out.

Disconnect = loss. The only time this could be a detriment is if you have a weak connection…in which case you should be able to choose matches according to the strength of your connection to the opponent and, as most anybody looking for a good match would do before they even got online, you would do your best to ensure that both your game and your online setup are as tight as can be.

To think I literally plastered CapcomUnity with this info, too. IIRC, even D. James Goddard agreed with me! C’mon now…how much more sense can a guy make?

Just a tad frustrated…

Be careful there OJ. This is most certainly not intentional behavior. Bugs with disconnects are incredibly hard to handle on both Xenon and PS3. Also possible that it’s not even Backbone’s fault.

Well, this will make you proud Eggo. Today I had someone ragequit not once, twice, or thrice but four times in a row for playing Balrog, Deejay, Bison and Honda against my Blanka and losing royally. Makes me wish I was videorecording the epic counter character fail.

Hopefully no one else is experiencing the same phenomenon.

its strange i dont ever recall me getting a win for someone ragequitting on me, in fact i’ve been keeping count of all the ragequits of gotten, and those they dont show up in my daily record or the overall rankings.

I hope Capcom patches this shit again…soon.
Doesnt Soul Calibur give losses to people that disconnect?

I just had someone dizzy me in the 5th round and then drop. It had to have been a random internet spasm. I didn’t get a loss for it but I’m not sure about my wins.

Sorry I got this video a little too late but I must say… it made me smile. Big props to you on the ragequitter/dropper/scrub.

You know what you should do…quit on the quitters. Speaking of which, I’m tempted to send Z Somer a link to that Youtube vid…

I like that idea. So long as it’s someone you KNOW is going to quit on you, why bother kicking their ass. Just go find a game with someone else.

Yup. If I am 100% certain a dude will quit on me, I let them beat on me and then I just leave. Chances are it irritates them.
